EdStudies professor, Dr. Terri Filbert, 2015 MAT interns, Whitney Nyman and Gabby Collins, and Katherine Norton, principal of Park Hall Elementary School, presented "Teacher Candidates, Sixth Grade Campers, and an Owl: Connecting & Reading in Summer Camp" at the "Service-Learning & Civic Engagement Conference" at American University on March 28. Terri's blurb in the event brochure was: "Last summer, St. Mary's college of Maryland held its first annual camp on campus for local rising sixth grade students. Connecting with the St. Marys county public schools, the camp worked to take initial steps to prevent the "summer slide" that often occurs for students who are not reading and experiencing enrichment activities during the summer months. Come learn from this model and explore similar endeavors in your own community."
