Tuesday, December 5: Pyramaze, “Year of the Phoenix”

That “Year of the Phoenix” sounded so much like Iced Earth wasn’t entirely Pyramaze’s fault.  Sure, the Danish outfit’s brand of power metal shared many of the same obvious influences and touchstones that powered Jon Schaffer’s crew, but Pyramaze generally fell on the more progressive end of the power metal spectrum, with greater emphasis on keyboards and a slightly artier bent. But while it may seem obvious that the presence of on/off IE frontman Matt Barlow would skew “Year of the Phoenix” over to Something Wicked This Way Comes territory, the resemblance showed just how pivotal Barlow was to Iced Earth’s early success.  As it was, the song ripped in fine Euro metal fashion, with a charging gallop over which Barlow bellowed apocalyptic.  Naturally, the presence of a name vocalist increased Pyramaze’s exposure considerably, even though nobody expected Barlow to actually stick around.  And while he indeed left not long after Immortal ran its course, powerhouse tunes like “Year of the Phoenix” did enough to establish Pyramaze on the international scene and build them a long-lasting career.
