"We are the band CHVRCHES and we’re really excited to work with Matt from The Na- Matt from The National...”
I like a good surprise. I think it’s innate in people. We live our boring lives and do whatever it takes to bring some excitement in our lives. It certainly is why a lot of people ride bikes but I think that mentality in a lot of ways. Whether it’s news or how narrative structures in movies and books work. More of the same is just mind numbing and too like everything else in the world that we don’t want more of. It’s why I don’t like certain riding and tricks or a lot of things in life like eating rice everyday. It’s why certain riders can definitely be overrated. If I’m forced to watch more of the same every single time a rider drops something, what use is it to watch it in the first place (this particular opinion certainly is more nuanced than that). None of this has anything to do with recent news of Matt by the way. It certainly inspired me to rewatch some of his sections but his riding I think is expressed with a good surprise.
I can’t help but see this as almost a parallel to Rooftop in Forward. I wrote somewhere back I really like Rooftop’s section in Forward. It really pushes the boundaries of what most riders will constitute as bike riding. To some it will be too much but I think what I want out of bike riding is something exciting and it certainly accomplishes that. Beringer’s riding is very much like that but on a more relatable scale. Like the snowbike tricks was so cool when I first saw it. Cause what kid on the East Coast didn’t want a snow bike!? And the wall carve behind the guy with the saw was one of those things that isn’t really anything but the idea of slipping and falling into a saw is terrifying enough to dissuade most. But the parallel doesn’t stop there.
Matt can send it. He was pretty much the only non-Nitro Circus like rider who did frontflips. That one on the wedge to wedge hip was certainly unexpected. Followed up by the flair to wallsmash/wallride. Like It’s so sloppy and terrible but at the same time it’s so crazy it doesn’t even matter. I think those two tricks are one of the most memorable sequences of tricks that I even care to remember. On that note Matt was also one of the few rides who really did flairs before anyone else by a good whole decade or so. I’d argue he still does them best cause he actually puts the air in flairs. A lot of the newer ones are just side corkscrew type maneuver which is certainly impressive but the beauty of the backflip/flair is being able to fall straight on your dome and breaking your neck and perishing to the next world. The corkscrew thing is pretty low on that. Watch this section and he pulls them out on legit spots in street.
But then all that epicness is offset by what we now call “jibs”. That’s another aspect of his riding he thrived in. Weird spots and weird tricks to make full use of it. Every Beringer section had some new idea that he himself was exploring and progressing and the section was there to document it. In this one I wanna say it’s the first sprocket chunks to rails. Later in his career the Beringer grind will really take full effect. A trick that is single handedly progressed by the person it’s named after. All these things plus the obscure spots he rides makes his riding more relatable cause there is never a moment where Beringer comes off as a mega talented superstar rider. Just a guy who really pushed his own brand to the next level. A riding full of surprises and different ideas and attempts on what he found interesting.
One of the biggest aspects of Beringer was that it was never limited to just that. One of the biggest legacies he will leave behind is the best DIY spot built by riders, for riders.
That’s only part of it. There’s a trampoline setup, an indoor bowl, and at one point water slides. Also probably a lot of other things I’m completely forgetting. I think that need for variety is further extended to how his backyard setup grew and progressed to. Cause it certainly is unique and different which makes it the most memorable. It was the dream spot for a lot of younger riders and something that had no shortage of coverage throughout the years from all sorts of riders. A true BMX mecca nestled somewhere in Utah of what seems to be nowhere. A true creator creates and it’s never limited to just one thing. Even his barends which you can now buy but back in the day when people still rode metal ones, having an Arboc barend was a sign that you were in amongst the coolest of crowds.
I don’t know how to conclude it but Matt Beringer is dope. This section I think is his best for sure. I’ll take a Beringer section even now cause even at his old age I’m sure his jibs are still next level.

Matt Beringer Indy concert the national Kunstrasen Bonn, together with my daughter Z. What can be more closeness if a father get such a present from his daughter. To accept exactly his live feeling of nearly a quarter century. It was the second time, she do this. Great. Too many moments in my live are both connected with Z. & Matt. A big great emotional moment in Bonn. Thank you for your love Z. Thank you Matt sharing your mind and your beautiful music such long time for me. The concert began with Runaway…. the years pass by in my head and filled with gratitude. Sooo deep emotional.❤️❤️❤️
