Monday, September 19: Soulfly, “Bethlehem’s Blood”

Moving to Nuclear Blast after decades on Roadrunner (which pretty much let him do whatever he wanted) seemed to snap Max Cavalera into focus, as Soulfly’s albums from Savages onward were much tighter, less indulgent and had a clearer sense of purpose. That he also ceded the producer’s chair to guys who knew what they were doing certainly helped, and Matt Hyde gave Archangel a particularly vicious snap that brought Cavalera’s roar back to life with renewed vigor. Perhaps best of all, the record was economical, running under 40 minutes and forcing the band to keep their eye on the ball: at around four and a half minutes, “Bethlehem’s Blood” was one of the longer numbers, but still maintained the intensity and fire without feeling bloated (which, quite frankly, was the case with most of Soulfly’s Roadrunner output). Marc Rizzo largely did away with the attempts at Nintendo sound effects and shredded like a proper lead guitarist, showing personality in his playing in a good way. Zyon Cavalera also proved to be a steady hand behind the drumkit, grounding the track with precision and propulsion. Nobody would’ve expected a good Soulfly record in 2015- we’d largely given up hope of that around 2005- but Archangel and “Bethlehem’s Blood” in particular was a pleasant surprise that showed Max Cavalera still had some life in him.
