Fanfiction!
I'm not great at writing, but I wanted to give this fanfiction idea a go. It's basically just your Hogwarts sorting, with a few extra characters added in... I don't really know enough about you to do it accurately, but it was fun! (I gave you a surname near the end of the alphabet so you could go last, because I don't know your real one.) I don't like the ending, I couldn't work out how to finish it, but this is the best I've come up with. I hope you like it!
The Sorting Ceremony
The train started to slow down. Alice could just make out the edge of the lake and the station through the night, as well as some kind of carriage at the side of the platform. When the train finally came to a halt, she reached up and grabbed her luggage. Dragging her trunk out of the compartment, she joined the crush of students making its way onto the platform, a nervous anticipation bubbling in her stomach.
Soon, she heard a shout of, "Firs' years, over here!" coming from a gigantic man with an amazing black beard and friendly-looking eyes, who was standing next to a small fleet of boats by the river. Alice began to press towards him through the mass of older students, who were waiting to get on the carriages. (Interestingly enough, the carriages that were already leaving the platform seemed to be moving without the help of horses or any other kind of magical creature... But she'd work that out later.)
When the other First Years had arrived, the man began to speak. "Is this everyone? My name's Hagrid, I'm the gamekeeper at Hogwarts. Righ', well, we'll be taking the boats up to the castle, an' then you'll be sorted into yer Houses. It's traditional, see."
A girl near the back of the group raised her hand tentatively. "How do we get sorted?"
"I don' want to spoil the surprise – yeh'll find out soon enough! Now, everyone get into groups of three or four for a boat, an' we'll be off."
Alice made her way towards the nearest boat, where she was quickly joined by three boys, who hurriedly introduced themselves.
"I'm John Watson, and this is Sherlock," said one of them, pointing at a dark-haired boy standing next to him. Sherlock was looking round interestedly. He turned his gaze to Alice, giving her the odd feeling that he was X-raying her. He narrowed his eyes slightly, as if he was trying to work something out, then nodded once. Looking satisfied, he turned to climb into the boat. John gave Alice an apologetic shrug and followed him.
"And I'm Matt Smith," said the last boy, grinning from ear to ear.
As soon as he had sat down in the boat with the other three, tripping over a small rock on his way, it began to glide down the river, forming a V shape with the other boats. Suddenly they turned a bend in the lake, and the castle came into view, all at once. It loomed over them, complete with towers, the highest of which were obscured slightly by fog, and a set of heavy wooden doors. Outside the doors, an irritable-looking man stood holding a lantern.
He leered down at the pale First Years as they got out of the boats and clustered around the door. "You'll want to get tidied up a bit. I don't turn a blind eye to muddy footprints all over the Great Hall, even if it is your first day."
"Let 'em be, Filch. They've got enough on their plates as it is, goin' up in front of the whole school an' all," said Hagrid, waving one huge hand.
Filch gave the group a nasty look, but opened the door. They were met by a severe looking witch, who was wearing a tall hat and a cloak. Her grey hair was held tightly in a bun, and she gave the new First Years an appraising look, as though she was trying to identify and commit to memory the potential troublemakers of the group.
"Good evening to you all. My name is Professor McGonagall. I will be taking you into your Sorting in a few minutes' time. I'm sure I need not tell you how important this event will be for the rest of your school careers. While you are at Hogwarts, your House will be like your family. You will take part in all activities together. Good behaviour will earn you points, and bad behaviour will lose it. Before we are needed, I suggest you try to look presentable. After all, this is the first glimpse your Housemates will be getting of you."
At that, she turned and waited for them to follow her into the Entrance Hall. The First Years shuffled into the hall, nervously trying to shake the mud off their feet as they were fixed by Filch's glare.
Professor McGonagall had now reached the doors to the Great Hall, where the older students were waiting for the Sorting Ceremony.
"Come along then. We can't keep Professor Dumbledore waiting," she said briskly, and she threw open the doors. None of the First Years seemed to want to be the first to go into the Great Hall. Eventually, a small boy was pushed through by the crowd of people, and gradually, everyone followed him in.
Professor McGonagall, in the mean time, had taken down a stool and a very battered old wizard's hat. Though lots of the First Years seemed prepared for this, several gave the hat cautious looks, and one girl stepped back onto Alice's toes, trying to get a bit further away. A rip in the base of the Hat opened, and they heard a voice.
It's a whole new year, So here's my song: I work out where You'll all belong.
If in Gryffindor, You're brave and bold, Your founder favoured Your "heart of gold".
A new Ravenclaw? You'll thrive with your kind, You have a thirst for learning And an inquisitive mind.
If it's Hufflepuff Where your loyalties lie, You are kind and fair, You'll work hard to get by.
As a Slytherin, Determined and cunning, You have the highest desires As your ambition is stunning.
So try me on And I will decide On your friends, your rivals, And eventual allies.
I see your thoughts, It's as simple as that, I know where you'll be, I'm the Sorting Hat!
"When I call your name, you will come and try on the Sorting Hat. When it tells you what House you are in, you will go and be seated at the correct table. I hope that you will all do your respective Houses proud," Professor McGonagall said.
So this was the mysterious "Sorting"... Alice's heart thumped hard. her stomach fizzing with a mixture of nerves and thrill. John's face was set hard, and his hands were clenched into fists at his sides.
"You're sweating, and I can see your pulse at the side of your neck. Are you nervous, John?" whispered Sherlock, his eyebrows creased in confusion. "You're never nervous."
"Shut up, Sherlock," John muttered, turning back towards the hat in the middle of the hall.
"Anderson, Freya," called Professor McGonagall. A girl with short blonde hair broke out of the crowd of First Years and made her way carefully up to the stool. She looked petrified at being the first to be sorted. Professor McGonagall placed the Hat on her head. It fell down over her eyes. About half a minute later, it announced, "RAVENCLAW!"
One of the tables in the middle burst into applause, and Freya, looking relieved, hurried over to sit down, after handing the Hat back to Professor McGonagall.
Sherlock was now staring at the Sorting Hat, talking rapidly under his breath. "Old, very battered. I think this is from the founders' time. Look at that rip there, near the top, its owner's been in quite a few fights, it was probably Gryffindor. Interesting, that hole goes in at an angle, looks like he was attacked from behind, which of course implies that he was very dangerous in a duel. His attacker obviously didn't want to come from the front..." The fingers of his left hand drummed out a rhythm against his leg as he thought. Alice wondered if this was his way of coping with the stress.
During this time, another boy had been sorted, this time into Hufflepuff. At this point, Matt tapped Alice on the arm. "Badger!" he whispered, his eyes shining in happiness.
"What?"
"It's a badger. On the crest." He pointed at the table in question, where the House crest was hung, showing, sure enough, a badger. "I'm going there. I like badgers."
"I know where everyone's going," said Sherlock suddenly. "That girl there, about to be sorted. She's a Slytherin. Can't you see the way she's looking around at us? She's trying to memorise us. She's determined to do better, but she's worried that she hasn't got the intelligence."
Alice stared at him in astonishment, barely noticing as the House on the table at the right burst into applause, welcoming their newest addition to Slytherin. "How do you do that?"
"I look. I notice. Sometimes it amazes me how unintelligent the rest of humanity can be. I know what House you'll be in too." That thought hadn't occurred to her yet. "I'm not telling though. It'll be a surprise. You too, John."
"But-" John protested.
The rest of John's words were cut off by Professor McGonagall. "Holmes, Sherlock."
Sherlock walked up to the stool, his face carefully neutral. Only a fraction of a second after the Hat fell over his eyes, it announced, "RAVENCLAW!" Sherlock looked over towards John as he went to join his new House. John smiled encouragingly, but Alice saw his face fall slightly as Sherlock moved away from him.
The sorting progressed slowly, as each of the interminable number of First Years was placed in a House. Alice and Matt quickly developed a game in which they tried to guess which House the new students would be sorted to. (John declined their offer for him to play too, simply saying, "Sherlock would have known immediately..." By the look of it, he was in mourning over the loss of his friend to a House he didn't think he could join him in.)
"That's a Hufflepuff for sure," muttered Matt out of the corner of his mouth.
"SLYTHERIN!" screamed the Hat.
Alice bit her lip to stop herself from laughing at her new friend's outraged expression. "Oh well, better luck next time. That one must be a Ravenclaw."
Soon however, they were interrupted by Professor McGonagall's voice, which rang out, "Smith, Matthew."
Matt blanched, but took a deep breath and made his way over to the stool. His sorting took longer than Sherlock's. Alice could see his lips framing the word "badger" several times. Finally, a couple of minutes later, the Hat shouted for the school to hear, "HUFFLEPUFF!" Matt pulled it from his head, beaming and ran off to join the cheering table in the middle.
Eventually, there were only two of them left - Alice and John. Sure enough, "Watson, John," rang out across the hall.
John caught Alice's eye. "See you in a minute," he mumbled, then he strode towards the stool.
Only seconds after the Hat touched his head, it cried, "GRYFFINDOR!" and John pulled it off and hurried towards the table on the left, where Alice saw a red-haired Prefect congratulate him.
Now that she stood alone, Alice's heart started to race again, and her insides seemed to be attempting an animated performance of the can-can... "Williams, Alice," called Professor McGonagall. Alice stepped forwards, trying to look indifferent at the same time as avoiding tripping over her robes, which were too long for her so that she could "grow into them". She saw John give her a quick thumbs up from the Gryffindor table where he sat, before the Sorting Hat was dropped onto her head and she could see nothing.
"You're very interesting," said a quiet voice in her ear.
Oh yes?
"You're very brave, no doubt about that. But there's a strong loyalty there too, perhaps you should be in Hufflepuff. You've got a good mind - you could do well in Ravenclaw - and there's definitely a fierce determination in there too. So... where to put you..."
Pictures flashed through Alice's mind, pictures of Sherlock, of John, of Matt. I want to be with one of my friends, please.
"Not Slytherin then? No, I don't think that would quite have suited you anyway. Very well, I think I know the House for you.
GRYFFINDOR!" The Hat shouted the last word out to the school, and Alice swept it from her head and put it back on the stool with a slight flourish, feeling slightly dizzy with happiness. She could have sworn she heard it mutter something about carelessness, but at that moment, she didn't even care - she was too busy dashing towards the Gryffindor table, where John had moved up to make room for her and where the red-haired Prefect, who'd introduced himself as Bill Weasley, had shaken her hand and welcomed her to, as he put it, "the best House in the whole damn school".
She knew that she and John would remain friends with Sherlock and Matt, whatever their Houses, but for now, she was home.
THE END
