Matte paintings by Rik Rische for THE PHANTOM MENACE (1999).
Behind the scenes of WILLOW (1988).
The mattes are by Chris Evans (who also did the art of images 3, 4, 5), Sean Joyce and Paul Swendsen. In the last photo—the filming of those gorgeous fairy shots—we see Denis Muren and George Lucas, among others.
(Most of these images come from here.)
Mattes and concept art from FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956).
The neon-lit Gotham City of BATMAN FOREVER (1995). Constructed mostly from matte shots and miniatures, with a splash of CGI.
The Gotham of these films resembled Blade Runner’s LA mixed with Dick Tracy’s candy-colored metropolis, with some seriously huge statues. The films themselves have no weight of course (they are parodies), though I enjoy the scenery and the art.
Painted matte shots from DICK TRACY (1990). For the film, the shots were enhanced with miniatures and lighting, but they look fine in their basic form too.
By the way, I tried to search for other Dick Tracy posts on my blog but nothing came up, even though I shared several. Is stupid Tumblr blindly censoring the word “dick”?
