The neon-lit Gotham City of BATMAN FOREVER (1995). Constructed mostly from matte shots and miniatures, with a splash of CGI.
The Gotham of these films resembled Blade Runner’s LA mixed with Dick Tracy’s candy-colored metropolis, with some seriously huge statues. The films themselves have no weight of course (they are parodies), though I enjoy the scenery and the art.

Remembering Barbara Ling 1952-2026
Noted film production designer Barbara Ling has died at 73. She won an Oscar for Best Production Design on Quentin Tarantino's excellent 2019 period piece Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which I named my #1 Movie of 2019. Beyond being a period piece set in 1969, it was also set in the Hollywood film industry of the era with Western movie sets as well and she swung it out of the park on that film.
Other notable films she designed included Less Than Zero, The Doors, Falling Down, and this year's Michael. It is worth noting that she also worked on Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Say what you will about those Batman movies, but they definitely looked good from the art dept. standpoint! She got her start as a lighting designer on 1981's The Pee-Wee Herman Show comedy special.
