My beautiful Hayley, the Rashida to my Amy, platonic love of my life. In return for your Ask I’d like you to list IN ORDER your top 5 (or however many depending how carried away you get) Amy Poehler quotes and why you love them. Love u xx
wow!!! how dare u!!!! there’s so many!!!!!!!
1. “Hold on when things feel stormy.” For some reason, this quote has really stuck with me. Whenever I’m going through a rough patch, or I get that super tight, horrible feeling in my chest, I repeat those words in my head. It’s hard to explain, but it feels like something physical - something to ‘hold on’ to - for me, and it helps get me through whatever it is I need to get through. I genuinely believe that those six words are the best gift Amy has given me.
2. “Just kind of take it bird by bird.” Which is actually a quote taken from the book, ‘Bird by Bird’ by Anne Lamott but the context in which Amy talks about it really resonated with me. And I will forever be grateful that she introduced me the concept/idea. It’s very calming to remind yourself to take things bird by bird when everything is starting to feel like too much.
3. “It takes years as a woman to unlearn what you have been taught to be sorry for. It takes years to find your voice and seize your real estate.” taken from Yes Please. Because this was something I did have to learn, and am still learning. And it’s been a pretty important journey for me to find my voice.
4. “Crying gets the sadness out.” Amy says this is in one of her Ask Amy videos and references that it’s from ‘Free to Be...You and Me’. It’s really helped me to lean into crying - especially when it comes to grief, and that was an important lesson for me to learn. Spoiler alert: actively trying not to cry in a grief counselling session when you’ve lost your best friend is ridiculous. Cry. It helps.
5. “And I think Leslie Knope would love to have given me this star, and in many ways she has.” Because honestly? I think about this sentence CONSTANTLY and it always makes me emotional x1000000.
Bonus One: “I don’t care about Star Wars. And I never fucking did.” Not that I have anything against Star Wars at all, just because it’s absolutely hilarious. Context: Sisters was being released the same day as Star Wars, so it was being brought up in basically every press interview they’d done. Eventually she snapped (and I don’t blame her).
Bonus Two: “If you don’t eat pussy, keep walking.”
Bonus Three: “Yeah.” in response to being asked if she’s dating Rashida Jones.
