SUBLIME CINEMA #522 - TIMBUKTU
Abderrahmane Sissako’s films often deal with displacement, moral and physical; as he’s a man who hails from a part of the world that has dealt with its fair share of upheaval and flux. Mauritanian born, but Malian raised and based, his films are usually set in Mali and some are masterpieces.
Mali has amazing cultural output - music, films, art, it’s one of the most vibrant places in Africa but in recent years has gone through hell and back. This film is about some of that hell.
