This is how I'm getting all my photos out of my drone. In flight, moving air keeps the drone cool, and it will get warm if left still and on for a long time, so the plan is to sit under this fan:

The drone does save everything to an SD card - and normally. I'd put that into the computer for copying directly to the back up. But format weirdness has prevented that - lately the only thing that has been able to read from that memory card is the drone's own phone app.

I tried a bunch of recovery tools which could see some sort of disk volume but none could read the data.

And so, this janky way is how it's gotta be until i can have another go at formatting - once almost a years worth of photos are off it. Gonna be a lot of finding and moving files around.

DJI Mavic Mini Thoughts After a Few Months

PROS:

It's small! The thing folds down and fits in about any bag I can carry with room for another camera. 

It's pretty easy to fly! I only crashed it three times, and once doesn't really count because it was in my living room. The other time was also my fault because I forgot to unfold all the legs (d'oh).

The image quality is better than I thought it would be! It's a pretty small sensor but the photos turn out nice. It's kinda of like an iPhone that you can fly up in the air. 

CONS:

That being said, the image quality could be better. It's good for what it is, but it does make me wish for something like this with a micro four thirds (or 1") size sensor. Even if that isn't an option because of size and weight, I would have at least liked RAW support. 

Some of the automatic detection stuff that the Spark had would have been nice. 

More LEDs would be great for flying at night. The thing is super hard to see in the dark.

Wind can kinda kick this thing's ass. I guess that's what you give up for the size and weight tho. 

Overall I'm hella impressed by this little guy. It's definitely my favorite new "camera" that I've got for less than $600. It’s perfect for getting shots of murals that are tricky to shoot from the ground, or graffiti high up on buildings. While it’s the equivalent of getting an entry level DSLR (which I tend to encourage people not to do since they’re easy to “grow out of”), for my purposes it beats all of the bigger drones because it doesn’t weigh me down when I go shooting with a regular camera in my bag.

Amazon Prime Day Drone Deal!

Last year, I had the idea to make a Santa Sleigh I could fly beneath my drone. This ended up not happening as my computer was away for repairs. This year, I don't have that problem.

Here's the cad model, drawn up based on some clip art I found.

Everything needs to be outlines to minimise air resistance, and keep it as light as possible.

As you can see, this Santa is being made with an Australian twist.

Several hours of printing later, and it was time to stick it together. Wanting strength, I used skewers, even though they were a little thicker than I originally planed for.

It must be wide enough to not confuse the drone's downward sensor.

The morning of Christmas Eve, I awoke to this weather forecast.

I proceeded with final assembly anyway. There were gaps in the clouds, it was only bucketing down some of the time.

The strings need to be equidistant from the balance point, and all the same length.

Launch has to be done very carefully. Going to have to fly very smoothly to prevent twisting.

It flies!

I took it down to the park.
