Sicktember 11: ER/Ambulance

Nicholas Black/Max Harte/Mission Impossible 1988

Sometimes the bad guys win… at least for a while. This is a part of one of my unpublished stories called “Best Laid Plans” and is an alternative “what if” to the episode “The Fixer.” (1:13) (Which you can find on YouTube.)

 One Week after the Incident

“Be careful, Nicholas.” Those were the last words Jim had said to him. Those words were haunting the leader of the IMF team. Had been haunting him for the last six days. He tossed and turned restlessly on the lumpy hotel bed… the same one that had seemed fairly comfortable only a week ago… when they had planned to take out Arthur Six and be gone within a day or so.

That was before Six’s right-hand man Doyle had brought a .45 to the party during his meet with Nicholas.  Before Nicholas had gotten too close, and his luck had run out. Max had been able to prevent Doyle from killing Nicholas with a head shot, as the henchman had intended, but none of them had expected the nightmare that had awaited them after their successful scamming of Doyle.

Just post incident

Max had gotten the blackmail photos, and he ran to help Nicholas up. Only, Max was shocked when he realized Nicholas really was unconscious. He nearly panicked when he saw that there was blood under Nicky’s head… because they hadn’t put a blood bag anywhere near his head… and he was frantic when he realized that the blood bag covering his chest and belly had burst as planned, but that there was real blood mixing with the special effects blood. Nicky’s blood…

The next few minutes were a blur for Max. He would never remember starting CPR, nor using both their jackets to stop the real bleeding. Fortunately, the state-of-HIS-art padding Grant had provided had actually kept both bullets from piercing too far into his body, but they still caused more damage than they should have. Nicholas had simply gotten much too close to the assailant.

The ride in the ambulance to Bethesda was a nightmare for Max. He had insisted on accompanying Nicky, so they had allowed him to ride up front. He could hear all the things they were doing in the back to try to save his partner’s life. He had pulled the blood bag off, of course, but there was still way too much blood… real blood all over Nick. They had gotten his heart going again, but from what Max could tell, its beat was erratic, and things were not going well at all. Worse, he was deeply unconscious.

When they reached the Emergency Room, things happened fast, and Max was separated from Nicky from a kind but firm nurse who directed him to the waiting room. It was more than four hours before Max heard anything from the doctors. Of necessity due to the nature of their mission, the others waited elsewhere for word from Max before coming to the hospital. The doctor who came out was kind but serious, and Max feared the worst.

The doctor explained that the recoil from the force of the bullets slammed Nicholas’s body into the concrete floor of the parking garage. In turn, Nicholas slammed his head back into the concrete.  Those two actions caused two very bad things to happen. Nicholas Black’s heart had stopped, and he had suffered a skull fracture with a grade three concussion. He would survive, but it would be a long road to recovery for Nicholas. 

Max and the rest of the team would be beside him all the way…
