Glimmer hears the sound peel her out of sleep. Breathing. Heavy breathing from next to her. She blinks the tiredness away, turning over to see Adora with eyes snapped open, staring at the ceiling.
Her forehead was beaded with sweat, her breathing out of sync with the stillness of her body. Tears pricked at the edges of her eyes.
“Adora?” Glimmer asked, shifting to face her. She reached an arm out, ready to wipe the sweat from Adora’s forehead when those blue eyes turned to her, and Adora’s mouth was wide opened as she gasped over and over. Body shuddering. Glimmer’s hand froze in the air.
“G-Glim-Gli—” Adora could barely say her name. Glimmer felt her heart tightened in confused sympathy.
“I’m here, Adora. I’m here.”
Adora looked *terrified*. She kept her eyes on Glimmer, and Glimmer offered up quiet assurances. A tear rolled down the side of Adora’s face, and Glimmer felt helpless.
“Can I hug you, Adora?” She asked, wanting to reach out. “Blink at me once if I can.”
She waited, and watched as Adora gasped through her breathing still, before she shut her eyes with purpose, more tears falling through. Glimmer scooted over and wrapped her arms around Adora, head next to hers. Her heart pounded.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, Adora.” Glimmer offered, wiping her tears and smoothing her hair off her face. “I’m here, you’re safe. You’re okay.”
Glimmer didn’t understand. She pushed the confusion and questions for a better time, focusing on bringing Adora back to comfort. She started to breath in full view of Adora, clear and deep breathes for her to watch until she could follow.
Adora’s gasps hurt to hear, and Glimmer refused to break eye contact as she waited for Adora to follow her. It felt like hours, but however long Glimmer kept it up until Adora breathing evened out. Gasps went by unbroken. Then they grew softer, longer.
“I can’t… move my arms.” Adora said eventually. Glimmer reached down and took the hand closest to her, interlacing their fingers and gently bringing it up for Adora to see.
“Can you feel this?” Glimmer asked. The room was dark, and she could feel her cheek burning.
Adora was silent for an extra beat, and a weak smile emerged.
“Yeah. You’re warm.” Adora said it with such soft voice. Glimmer blinked, pinching her lips to the side to distract herself. She wanted to… it didn’t matter.
“Are you okay?” Glimmer asked. Finally, Adora looked away from Glimmer. Eyes on the ceiling. She could see the tears filling her eyes once more.
“…I don’t know.” Adora said with a strain. “Can you hold me for a little while?”
Glimmer wished she could do more.
“Of course.”
She leaned back over, pressing her lips to Adora’s cheek. Adora’s body was riddled with tension, shaking under her like a frightened child.
“I’m hear as long as you need, Adora.” Glimmer said, squeezing her. “I’m not going anywhere.”
