haven't read a ton of kidfic for hollanov, so apologies if this has been done already, but what i've seen from fic and headcanons, i've seen adoption, i've seen surprise baby from a previous relationship, and i've seen people pitch rose and svetlana as egg donors, i've seen jackie pike as a surrogate...but i've also seen the posts about yuna hollander lamenting that they can't actually get pregnant because their kids would be the greatest hockey players. which got me on a different train of thought.
it's a year or two after the outing, after shane has joined the centaurs, right before the end of camps for the summer, and max riley and leah campbell ask shane and ilya if they'd like to go to dinner just the 4 of them to talk about some things.
at dinner max and leah are like "we know this is way out of left field, and it's so fine if the answer is no, and you don't have to answer right away, please think about it, but we have a proposition for you." and they go on to detail how they've heard shane and ilya imply that they want kids some day, and max and leah also want kids, but neither couple has all of the equipment necessary to make that happen. and then max tells them that before he transitioned, he actually had some of his eggs harvested just in case, but now they've done all of the fertility counselling and it's going to be easier to just use leah's, but now those eggs are basically just sitting in storage. "you'd still have to find your own surrogate, but we could essentially...do a trade, if one of you is willing to be a sperm donor for us, we could donate max's eggs to you. there would still be a lot of paperwork and stuff to do, but we know you guys and we like you guys and it would be cool to help each other out. keep it all in the queer hockey family."
shane and ilya are floored, because they do want kids but they've been very intentionally not thinking about the details just yet because they don't want to get ahead of themselves before they're ready. but they didn't even consider this as a possibility, and now it's just fallen into their laps. nobody makes any final decisions at dinner, everyone says they have to think about it and discuss, but also they're imagining it. they're discussing what-ifs and possibilities and what if all their dreams could come true? what if ilya donated his sperm to max and leah, and then once they find a surrogate they'll use shane's for that baby (does that mean our kid is going to have 3 dads?), and then the two kids won't be biologically related to each other, but they'll basically treat them like cousins (our kid really won't have many cousins otherwise). shane is trying not to get ahead of himself, and his anxiety is battling with his desire to make so many plans, but a secret smug little voice in his head is already saying "our kids are going to be the best fucking hockey players."
