Shane and Bood are instant friends much to Ilya’s confusion. Zane comes in and starts talking to Shane like he’s been on the team for years. He tells Shane about the vacation he and Cassie went on and that he liked the photos Ilya had sent from their honeymoon. After their showers, Bood asks Shane what he thought of the AHL call ups at camp, particularly the defenseman from Edmonton who seems particularly promising. Shane doesn’t seem uncomfortable, so Ilya stays out of these structured conversations Zane is creating for them, and is pleased to hear Shane talk about him to Yuna over dinner that weekend.

By the next week, Shane is chatting with Zane as much as Ilya during practice, coming up with drills for the team to run through and nagging him about the way his left skate turns out when he’s shooting. Ilya is genuinely pleased even through his surprise when Shane mentions that they are going to babysit for Bood the next Tuesday so he can take Cassie out for a date night. Apparently they had worked it out at lunch. Wyatt had offered, but Lisa was working a double and would appreciate him home and paying attention to her that night, so Shane had suggested that he and Ilya do it.

Wyatt had worked his way into this dynamic at some point, gravitating over to Zane and Shane in the locker room for casual conversation and logistical discussions. Shane didn’t really know anything about superheroes, but Wyatt was totally cool with that and happy to explain, so Shane didn’t mind the detailed explanations about heroes and powers and comic books.

Ilya floats around, comfortably social as Captain once more without a secret life beyond hockey. He had hovered around Shane slightly the first week, but more often than not finds himself with Troy and Luca, only glancing at Shane for an occasional visual check in. Shane doesn’t like Troy yet and he hasn’t figured out how to talk to Luca without feeling like he’s gonna be asked for an autograph, so he waits for Ilya to break off and check on him throughout the day. When they get in the car to go home, Ilya gives Shane the full run down of everything that happened that day as Shane fills in any gaps he can.

They eat dinner on the couch with their legs tangled together. They suck each other off in the kitchen washing dishes. They shower together with Ilya’s lavender scented body wash. Shane reads in bed with Ilya’s head in his lap. They turn off the lamp and set an alarm. They fall asleep, one arm thrown across the other man’s hip. They’re in the same bed. In the same city. On the same team. And Shane is friends with Zane Boodram like they’ve played together for years.

They win their first Stanley Cup as teammates and as a married couple. The Centaurs go to a club to celebrate where they occupy the VIP section, complete with its own bar. They get their first round of drinks and half of the team move to sit on the comfy couches, away from the bar where the other half are doing shots. Shane and Ilya sit with their team and the conversation flows swiftly from analysing the cup winning goal by Troy, to arguing whether the opposing goaltender played bad because he was going through a breakup and then on to vacation plans. Shane leans into Ilya, content to be wrapped in his husband's arm and just listening to others talk. But shortly after, some of the guys at the bar come and steal Shane away. Ilya cannot see what they are doing but he doesn't bother finding out.

A few minutes later, the same guys come and drag Ilya to the bar, only for him to find Shane on the counter, lying on his back. Ilya quickly catches his eye, silently asking him if he's OK with whatever is happening and is relieved to find him smiling, giving Ilya a small nod in reassurance. Ilya then turns towards the team members gathered on the other side of the counter and shouts, " You dumb fuckers better have a good reason to have my husband up on the bar like this."

Wyatt answers," We don't want to die on the night we won the cup, so of course we have a good reason." He takes a shot from the bar tender and turns towards Shane. " OK, Hollzy. Suck your stomach in as low as you can." Shane pulls his tshirt up a little and sucks in a deep breath, pulling in his belly button, to make a hollow space as much as he can with his abs in the way. Wyatt pours the shot in, careful not to spill and announces proudly," Special shot for the Stanley Cup Champion!" All the guys start chanting " Cap! Cap! Cap!" and there is nothing else for Ilya to do except to bend forward, gather all the liquid in his mouth, his tongue tickling Shane's belly button in the process and tip his head back, swallowing it whole. Everyone gathered at the bar scream in delight, chanting Ilya's name. Ilya licks his lips and admits, " OK, that was genius. Now I feel bad for calling you stupid." Wyatt looks thrilled for a second before scrunching his face in confusion, " Wait, when did you call me stupid?" Ilya waves it away, "Doesn't matter. You are genius now." Shane doesn't get up but instead grabs the still upset Wyatt and tells him to get another shot. He then turns towards Ilya and says with a twinkle in his eye that Ilya knows so well but appears rarely in public, " Don't swallow it this time." Ilya grins at what Shane is implying and before he could respond, Wyatt has returned with another shot and is now filling Shane's belly once more.

Ilya steps forward to slurp all the liquid into his mouth again and with some difficulty manages not to swallow it. Shane lifts himself up on his elbows and Ilya wraps an arm around his neck, grabbing his chin and tilting his head back. Shane opens his lips when Ilya presses his mouth against them, pushing the vodka into his husband's mouth. Shane swallows to the sound of their team members going nuts, screaming their names at the top of their lungs. Someone calls out, " Holy shit, that's hot as fuck."

The couple laugh at their reaction and Ilya manages to find a wet wipe and cleans the remaining vodka off of his stomach before helping him down from the counter. They are promptly herded towards the dance floor and too tired to do anything more, they find themselves moving slowly in rhythm to the music, arms wrapped around each other. Midway through the first song, Shane leans in and whispers in Ilya's ear, "That was fun." Ilya grins and whispers back, " Maybe I can find more stuff to eat and drink off your belly button." Shane chuckles at that and Ilya pulls him in closer and sways to the music, heart full and content, that has nothing to do with winning the cup and everything to do with the man he married.

Can you imagine how jealous Ilya gets the first time other people see Shane in his glasses? It was a simple candid shot Max took of Shane working in his office at the Irina Foundation, glasses on as he filled out paperwork. As soon as it gets posted to the foundation’s instagram account, the people go feral. Shane Hollander is hot, but Shane Hollander with glasses… The photo is shared across social media platforms and multiple articles are written with the photo of Shane plastered front and center. Ilya is seething. Glasses Shane was meant for his eyes only. Shane has to keep telling his husband that, no, they cannot fire Max over this.

Ilya and Shane find each other endlessly fascinating. They are teenage crushes, husbands, teammates, best friends, soulmates, they will be married for 50 years and still think the other is the most interesting, the most beautiful, most admirable person ever.

Right after moving together and getting married they get to know each other in a completely different light, as they have to share an everyday routine. And sure, sometimes they butt heads, they can get annoyed, but most importantly there is this curiosity. The curiosity to learn more and more about the one person they love most in the world, to understand each other's quirks and habits.

Over ten years they build a relationship, showed each other secrets they have never shown anyone else before. And still, due to their impossible situation, there is so much they missed during this time, there are so many little tidbits to discovers, so many stories to tell. There are so much ordinary, mundane things they still have learn about each other, and Shane and Ilya happily go on the journey to discover them all, because it is about each other, their literal favourite person ever. How could anything about Shane or Ilya ever be boring to each other?

And even if they run out of stories to tell about the years they spend seperated, they are the kind of people who never get tired of listening to each other, rambling about whatever random thing crosses their minds. Ilya telling Shane for thirty minutes about a nonsensical dream he had? Be sure Shane will have follow up questions. Shane talking about one of his hockey books? Ilya will listening as if he found religion and Shane was the preacher. Ilya giving an in-depth report about his trip to the grocery store that is almost as long as the trip itself? Shane is locked the fuck in. Shane maundering, completely unstructured and unfiltered, about his favourite birds and this special hike he would like to do one day and then ranting about the newest gossip in the birdwatching community? Ilya is charmed that Shane unmasks in his presence, talking freely without a care in the world, and Ilya makes sure they do this hike next summer. Ilya will animatedly replay the game they just played on their PlayStation and Shane will give commentary like it was a real hockey game.

They could be at a Centaur bbq and some guys talk about their cars and Shane would completely ignore that and talk shop with Troy instead, but as soon as Ilya gives his two cents on the new BMW, Shane's head would snap around to Ilya and he would hang on every word he says.

Shane could give the rookies his mandatory hockey pep talks and Ilya would listen to Shane with the biggest heart eyes and nodding along, as if Shane wouldn't give the same lectures every year.

(That doesn't mean they wouldn't still tease the shit out of each other, and chirp each other relentlessly, like Seriously Hollander? Birdwatching? Are you a grandpa like Scott Hunter? Or Have you actually tried to play or are you just smashing buttons, Rozy? Need me to slow down for you to have chance?)

I enjoy possessive/territorial Ilya, but I'm partial to the idea that he is more of an insufferable braggart about Shane once they're out.

Like he's not telling people "don't imagine my husband naked DON'T think about how hot he is" bc he's under the assumption that everyone has already been doing that the entire time!!! He's like "Shane is the hottest man on this earth, obviously everyone wants a piece of that. Difference is now they know they have no chance because he is MINE."

The tone is more "sucks for you that all you can do is imagine Shane naked and think to yourself how hot he must be, and know that you will never even touch him because he chose ME. Continue on with your sad, Shane-less life, I guess."

Like when the Centaurs tell Ilya that Shane is an impressive pull, he's not like "don't think about him", but rather "hell yeah look at how impressive he is and look at how impressive that makes ME."

Ilya and Shane don't have many boundaries about physical touch in their relationship, but one is that Ilya can't touch him while he's doing his yoga. Ilya always respects that boundary.

Shane is doing yoga in tiny shorts and no shirt.

"Shane, you are cruel," Ilya groans dramatically, watching him from across the room. He's sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall, flushed from his own workout. "You know how irresistible you look in those shorts, moy lyubov,"

Shane smirks at him in the mirror on the wall as he moves into his next pose. "Maybe you're right. Should I take pity on you, Ilya?"

"Depends. Will pity let me touch you?" Ilya asks, hopeful but suspicious.

Shane pushes himself upright to mountain pose. Ilya stares at his stretched torso. "You know you can't touch me while I'm doing yoga. But I could wear something else."

"Nyet, no, keep the shorts-" Ilya's protests choke off as Shane's hands swing around to his waist, thumbs tucking into his waistband, and smoothly pulling the shorts down as he bends into a forward fold. The shorts drop to his feet. He was wearing a lace trimmed jockstrap under them. The wall mirrors let Ilya see him from in front and behind. "Fuck,"

Shane steps out of the shorts, throws them right at Ilya. Moves into his next pose as though he hadn't stopped. "Touch yourself, Ilya. Show me how much you like to watch me."

How could Ilya resist?
