Only supes have Soulmates. Well more like only people with superpowers have a way of knowing if they've met their soulmate or not. When someone with super powers makes skin to skin contact, like shaking hands, with their soulmate, said soulmates initials appears on their wrist. With this being the case it is entirely possible for two supes to know each other for years without ever knowing they're connected by fate.
Most supes grow up excited about the day they finally meet their soulmate, but Maximus Tunderman was a different story. In early childhood before he decided he was gong to be super villain instead of becoming a hero, he was excited. But once he started his villainous phase, he decided that finding out who his soulmate was would only cause him more trouble in the future. So he did everything he could to not find out who his soulmate was.
Anytime he meet someone new that was close to his age he would refrain from shaking hands, managing to pass it off as an act of rebellion. If he accidentally touched anyone he would panic slightly but let out a relived sigh when the sting of their initials never flashed across his wrist.
When the Thundermans moved to Hiddenville, Max assumed it would be easier to avoid making contact with others; since nonsupes weren't bound by the same desire of confirming if the new person they just meet was meant to be with them in some way for their whole lives. Boy was he wrong.
Well he was right in a sense. He could get away with just a nod or wave at his new friends and classmates, after all most normal teenagers weren't fond of shaking hands. What Max hadn't counted on was the strange pull he felt towards his twin sister's friend.
Max had seen Phoebe hanging out with Y/n around school a ton of times, and felt the slightest pull towards them, but never thought much of it. Y/n was just another one of his sister's nerd friends, who he only had to see at school and that was how it was going to stay. That is until Phoebe brought them over to their house after the 'no nonsupes' rule was lifted.
When Max climbed the stairs from his lair, he was shocked to see the y/h/c teen sitting on the couch chatting with Phoebe with textbooks spread out across the coffee table. Trying hide his surprise, he just continued past the living room to the kitchen, hoping the two wouldn't notice him. Unfortunately for him, Phoebe heard his foot steps and turned to face him while he was still walking behind the couch.
"Oh, Max. This is Y/n, my friend from school." Phoebe introduced her friend, even though she knew her twin wouldn't care, something told her to do it anyway. Max froze for a second before nodding and continuing his journey to get snacks without saying a word. Phoebe was shocked at the lack of snarky comment form her 'evil' twin, but brushed it off. "Okay, just ignore him then. Let's get back to studying I guess?" She said turning to her friend who had followed her twin with their eyes as he shuffled to the kitchen.
Y/n shook their head before turning back to their friend. "Yeah, we should. This test isn't going to pass itself." They responded with a chuckle. As the two study, Y/n couldn't stop thinking about the handsome brunette that had since disappeared down the slide under the stairs.
Over the next few months it seemed like no mater where they went Max and Y/n were running into each other. Not physically, but they kept almost bumping into each other at school, at the Thundermans' house, at Splat burger. It was like the world was trying to force them to be around each other. Both parties felt a strange pull to the other but while one was trying to avoid it, the other wanted to know if there suspicions were true.
Y/n was so fed up with Max avoiding them for seemingly no reason, that they decided to ask Phoebe what was going on with her twin.
"Why does he keep avoiding me? He's never even spoken to me and it's like he already hates me." Y/n vented one day while the two were getting lunch at Splat Burger.
Phoebe barley looked up from her food before responding. "I don't get why it's bugging you so much. Max isn't all the great anyways, plus he acts this way to all my friends."
Y/n sighed. "But he doesn't act this way with all your friends." They retorted. "I've seen him talk to Cherry. Sure, usually they just bicker. But with me, he won't even say hi." They finished laying their head on the table in front of them.
Phoebe took a moment to think about what her friend had said, and she quickly realized that Y/n was right. Ever since she brought Y/n home the first time, Max has never spoken a single word to the teenager. "Okay, you're right. He hasn't spoken to you. But again why do you care so much? It's just Max he's nothing spec-" The long haired girl cut herself off as she came to a surprising conclusion in her head. "You have a crush on him don't you?" She asked voicing her idea, silently hoping she was wrong. After all it wasn't super likely that her friend was her brother's soulmate but in the small chance they were she knew Max didn't want anything to do with his soulmate.
Hearing their friend's question, Y/n couldn't hide the blush the quickly developed across their face. "N-no. It's not like that. I- uh I just want to get along with your whole family that's all." They said fumbling over their own words.
"Omg you do! That's adorable, gross but adorable." Phoebe said trying to sound like a normal sister encouraging her friend while also being disgusted by someone liking her brother.
"I just said that I don't. But I would like to get to know him, from what I've heard around school he seems pretty cool." They said with a shrug trying to convince Phoebe that they really didn't have a crush on Max. After all it's not like Y/n could tell their friend that they think Max might be their soulmate; for all they knew the Thundermans were just normal nonsupes, and therefore wouldn't understand the pull Y/n felt towards Max.
Phoebe nodded, not really believing her friend but not pushing them any further. "Fine, I maybe I can talk to him and get him to open up. But I make no promises, me and Max aren't exactly the closest siblings ever." She said, hoping to appease her friend. "Now enough talking about my brother let's enjoy our day together." With that the two friends went about their day as usual.
After parting ways from Y/n, Phoebe went home and tried to come up with a plan to make good on her promise to her close friend. As she walked through the front door she decided that the best course of action would be just talking to Max and seeing what his problem was and trying to fix it. So, after greeting the rest of her family and putting her bag in her room, Phoebe made her way down to Max's lair.
"Hey Max can I ask you about something?" She asked as she entered he twin's underground room.
Max groaned as he turned away from his computer for a second before turning back to it. "Even if I say no you're still gonna ask, so go ahead?" He said, trying to focus on schematics for his next evil invention.
Phoebe smiled knowing her brother was right, even if he had told her to get lost she would pester him either way. "I was just wonder why you never speak to Y/n?" She asked getting straight to the point.
After hearing his sister say one of her closest friend's names, Max visibly froze for a second. "Why? It's not like I talk to any of your friends." He said trying to cover up how his body responded hearing Y/n's name.
"Oh, but you do. You talk, well bicker with Cherry every now and then. But not once have I seen you even try to poke fun at Y/n." Phoebe said while leaning against one of the many tables in the wanna be villains lair. "You don't even call them a nerd like the rest of my friends." She pointed out.
"Don't know. Never felt the need to I guess." Max said acting calm. "Again I ask why does it matter?" He said turning fully to make sure his sister wasn't messing with any of his gadgets.
Phoebe shrugged before responding. "I don't know honestly. They just asked me about it earlier and seemed upset about it. I think they want to get to know you or something." She left out the part where she suspects Y/n might have a crush on him, because he probably wouldn't respond well to that.
Max stayed silent for a few moments. Sure when ever Y/n was around he did his best to keep his distance, after all the pull he felt in chest since the first time they were in his house couldn't be a coincidence; but somewhere deep in his chest he also want to get to know his sister's friend. He sighed as he made up his mind. "Fine if it gets you to leave me alone, I will try to be nicer to them from now on. I can't promise I won't make fun of them or bicker with them but I will at least speak to them." He said trying to hide how this made him the slightest bit happy.
"Great. That was easier than I thought." Phoebe said as she turned to make her way out of the lair. "Oh by the way they're spending the night tomorrow so you can start being nicer to them then." She said as she disappeared leaving the teenager with his super villain rabbit, who thankfully stayed out of the conversation.
Max waited until he heard the door at the top of the stairs close before letting out an exasperated sigh and hanging his head in defeat.
"What's the matter Max?" Dr. Colosso said from his cage noticing his roommate's disgruntled look.
Hearing the rabbit's question, Max spun around to face his closest friend. "I don't know about this Colosso. I've been doing so well at keeping my distance from Y/n and now I'm supposed to what? Try to be friendly to them?" He said voicing some of his concern but not stating his true problem with getting to know the teenager.
Colosso tilted his head as he thought about what the teen had said. "Well why were you avoiding them? Cause if it was just to mess with Phoebe, I say keep it up." The villain said with chuckle.
Max shook his head as he moved to sit on his bed. "That's not it. Sure messing with Phoebe is a nice bonus to avoiding Y/n but that's not the reason." He started as he laid across the end of his bed trying to piece together his thoughts. "I don't know ever since we moved to Hiddenville and I first saw Y/n at school I've felt this… pull I guess towards them. And it only got worse once they started coming over to hangout with Phoebe." He explained not seeing the quizzical look on his rabbit's face.
"Something about the feeling makes me think it's not a good idea to get close to Y/n. Like becoming their friend isn't a good idea." Max said raising his head to look at the obnoxious rabbit.
Colosso remained silent as he proceeded all the information. "So, what are you saying Max? Do you think getting close to them will mess up your chances of being a villain?" He asked worried that he might lose his evil prodigy and his ticket back to his human form.
Slumping against his bed again, Max took his turn to think about his friend's question. Did he think getting close to Y/n would lead to him abandoning his villainous ways? "I'm afraid they might be my soulmate." The words left his mouth before he could stop them.
Of all the turns he thought this conversation would take, Colosso did not think that was where it was going. "What's there to be afraid of, soulmates don't have to be life partners. You could be fated to hate each other for the rest your lives for all you know." The rabbit said laughing at the teen's behavior. "Unless you actually like them?" He added, being more in tune with the boy's emotions then anyone else thought he could be.
"What, no. I just don't want to deal with having someone's initials on my wrist. Even if we are fated to be enemies, they could be used against me. And I just don't want to deal with that." Max said deflecting the rabbits suspicions. "Especially if they're not a supe, it's just more hassle." He added on.
The villainous rabbit sighed before speaking again. "Then what are you going to do? You promised Phoebe you would stop ignoring Y/n."
Max paused before responding. "I said I'd talk to them more, nothing more. I just have to keep my distance while keeping my promise to Phoebe so she leaves me alone."
After Phoebe had told Max to start being nicer to Y/n, the two actually hit off nicely. Max and Y/n became almost better friends than Y/n and Phoebe were. There was only one thing that made Y/n confused at first, which was the fact Max seemed fine with physical contact with everyone but them. It frustrated them slightly because they were almost positive that Max was their soulmate based on the pull they felt towards him, but why would he avoid touching them unless he also knew what would happen if they were soulmates and they touched.
Max's avoidance of physical contact with Y/n continued for a couple years before Y/n's suspicions were confirmed. Well some of them were.
When Y/n went to visit the Thundermans and was greeted by Phoebe introducing her new younger sister, Chloe who physically looked like a toddler even though she didn't exist until a week ago; Y/n immediately knew what was going on.
"You guys are supes aren't you?" They asked their friend as they sat on the couch while eyeing the newest Thunderman.
Phoebe visibly froze for a second before trying to cover it up. "Whaaat? No, that's crazy talk." She said with a nervous laugh as she sat by her friend. "Chloe is just…" She was clearly having trouble coming up with a good cover.
Y/n smiled before cutting off their friend. "It's fine, Phoebe. You don't have to lie to me." They said trying to reassure the brunette. "I also have superpowers." Y/n finished, slightly enjoying the way Phoebes face morphed from panicked to confused.
"What do you mean, 'also' no one said anything about having superpowers?" Phoebe said still trying to cover it up.
Realizing that Phoebe wasn't likely going to admit to having powers of her own with out them proving it first Y/n stood up and walked to the center of the living room. Their friend watched confused as they almost instantly shifted into the shape of a Raven.
Before Phoebe could say anything about what she just saw, Max entered the room quickly spotting the large bird perched on the coffee table. "Wow Pheebs, I didn't realize you were so boring that you had to make friends with birds." He said laughing at his own attempts to make fun of his win.
"That's not just a bird it's Y/n." Phoebe said still trying to process that while she was hiding that her and her family were supes on of her best friends was also a supe.
Max froze hearing Phoebe's statement. "Real funny Phoebe. Like I'm going to believe our friend just turned into a bird in the middle of the living room. The animalizer isn't even— "Max was cut off by the bird shifting back into his friend. "Okay, so they were a the bird. But how?" He asked turning to Y/n.
They just smiled before responding. "I'm also a superhero. My powers let me shape shift in to different animals." Y/n explained. "And I'm telling you because I figured out that you guys are also heroes."
"Whaaaat? Why would you think that?" Max said almost perfectly mimicking his twin's earlier response to the same accusation.
Y/n rolled their eyes and crossed their arms ready to explain once again how they figured it out. But Phoebe beat them to it. "Drop it Max, they figured it out because of Chloe." She explained to her brother. "And honestly thank goodness you did, cause that's one less friend I have to lie to about all this." She finished looking to her friend how rejoined her on the couch.
Max stood for a moment looking between the two before he realized something. "Alrighty then, I promised Colosso that I'd buy him a new out fit with dad's credit card so I'll be going now." He said quickly before bolting out the front door.
"He's hiding something isn't he?" Y/n asked noticing how fidgety Max had become in the moments after realizing they were also a supe.
Phoebe thought for a second. "Probably, but don't worry about that right now. Let's catch up on all the things we haven't told each other because we thought we were both nonsupes." Phoebe said moving the topic away from her brother.
It only took a week for Y/n to notice that Max was once again avoiding them all together. What used to be conversations between classes and after school hangouts at Splat Burger, turned in to barley a passing nod or wave in their general direction when they tried to get Max's attention. So Y/n went back to the only person they thought could help them, Phoebe.
About a two weeks after they revealed their powers to the Thundermans, Y/n found themselves back in the colorful house. Sitting on Phoebe's bed the let out an exasperated sigh. "I know were supposed to be studying, but did I do something to upset Max?" They asked as Phoebe reentered her room after retrieve snacks for their study session.
Setting the snacks by her friend, Phoebe thought about their question. "Why do you think that?" She asked unable to recall her twin mentioning anything about being upset with Y/n.
Y/n shrugged as they began sifting through the pile of snacks. "Ever since I told you guys about my powers, He's been avoiding me like he did when we first meet." They explained picking up a bag of chips before continuing on. "Whenever I try to talk to him he just turns and walks away, or acts like I'm not even there. It honestly hurts a lot. I thought we were good friends but now it's like he can't stand to be around me." They vented hoping Phoebe might have some answers.
"That's weird. Are you sure he's avoiding you? Maybe he's just busy with one of his dumb gadgets or 'evil' plans." Phoebe answered, putting air quotes around evil.
"It feels a lot more deliberate than just being busy. He won't even answer my texts." Y/n responded while slowly eating their chips. "What if he hates me now that he knows I'm a hero? If he really is serious about being a villain than having a friend who's a hero would mess with that."
Phoebe took a seat on her bed close to her friend. "I doubt he hates you." She said resting her hand on her friends shoulder. "Why is this bothering you so much, though? I've seen Max stop talking to you for a couple days because of one of his dumb projects before and you've never looked this upset about it?" She asked noticing how her friends shoulders slumped a bit more as the conversation continued.
"This is going to sound crazy and you can't tell anyone this." Y/n started, deciding this was the best time to voice the suspicion they've had since they first met Max. When Phoebe nodded, a silent promise to keep the conversation between the two friends, Y/n began to explain. "Ever since you guys first started going to Hiddenville High, I've felt this slight pull towards Max. And it only got worse that first day you introduced us back when your dad lifted his no nonsupes rule and you invited me over to study." Y/n paused in their explanation trying to think of the right words to use, but before they could continue Phoebe interrupted.
"Oh My God! Do you think Max is your soulmate?" She asked having pieced together the details from her memories of what her parents have told her about how they met and figured out they were soulmates. Y/n just nodded not knowing how to answer. "So in the few years you guys have been friends, you've never even high-fived or anything?" Phoebe asked now slightly confused how the seemingly close friends had never made any form of skin contact with each other.
Y/n shrugged. "Nope, but not for a lack of trying. Every time I tried he just waved me off or left me hanging. And now that I know your also supes, I can't help but think that maybe he also thinks were soulmates and doesn't want to end up being tied to me for the rest of his life." Y/n began to vent, having gotten their original suspicion of their chest, the worry just flowed out on it's own.
"Maybe he's just scared?" Phoebe challenged, but seeing the look on Y/n's face she knew that likely wasn't the case. "You're right that doesn't really sound like Max. How about this, I go talk to him again like I did last time he was ignoring you? Maybe this time he'll see what a huge jerk he is being and come apologize and you can hug and find out if you are soulmates?" Phoebe offered.
Before Y/n could respond, their phone went off indicating they had gotten a text. "It's my mom, I have to get home." They explained as they typed a quick reply. "You can try talking to him but it's Max. If he doesn't want anything to do with me anymore than I guess it doesn't matter if we're soulmates or not. I'll text you later. Bye Pheebs." Y/n finished grabbing their backpack and rushing out the Thundermans house.
After y/n left Phoebe quickly made her way down to Max's lair. "Max, do you really want your only friend to be a talking rabbit?" She asked as she entered the tech filled room.
"Hello to you too, Phoebe. Aren't you supposed to be studying with Y/n? Why are you down here bugging me?" Max asked not looking up from whatever it is he was working on.
Phoebe rolled her eyes at her brother. "I was but they had to go home. But not before telling me about how you've been completely ignoring them since you found out they're also a superhero." She explained, taking notice of how Max seemed to freeze in his seat for a moment. "Why are you ignoring them? They think you hate them." She said leaning against one of the many tables waiting for answer.
Max turned slightly to look at his sister. "I'm not ignoring Y/n. I've just been busy, that's all." He tried to defend himself.
"Busy with what? How are you too busy to even text one of your best friends to let them know you're busy?" Phoebe argued, not believing her twin's excuses. "Y/n's really upset about this. You need to fix it. Especially because they think you're —" She cut herself off remembering the promise she had made to her friend not long before heading into the lair.
Turning fully at Phoebe's cut off sentence, Max carefully watched his sister trying to figure out what she may have been about to say. "They think I'm what, Phoebe?" He pressed, taking notice of how the supe looked more panicked at his question.
Phoebe let out a nervous laugh. "Nothing, I didn't say anything." She said, trying to avoid eye contact. "Just talk to them so they know you don't hate them." With that she turned and bolted up the stairs to avoid accidentally breaking her promise.
"Well, that was weird, even for Phoebe." Dr. Colosso said breaking the silence that settled over the room. "Now where were we, what's your next big evil plan?" He asked wanting to put the topic back on causing trouble.
Unfortunately for the villain turned rabbit, Max's train of thought was else were. "Do you think Y/n also suspects we're soulmates?" He asked, not really expecting Colosso to respond in a helpful manner, more to just get the thought off his chest. "If the pull I feel towards them really is because we're soulmates maybe they feel it too? Would they tell Phoebe about it?" He began rambling out questions trying to figure out what to do.
Max never wanted to be tied to his soulmate, but hearing that the person he suspected was his soulmate thought he hated them, made him feel strange. Like he was letting himself and the universe down for making them feel that way.
"If you still don't know if your soulmates, why does it matter? Maybe if they think you hate them, they won't try to find out if you are soulmates." Colosso said pulling Max's attention back to him. "Isn't that what you wanted? To never know who your soulmate is for certain?"
Thinking for a second, Max settled on agreeing with Colosso. "Yeah, you're right. If I want to be the world's greatest super villain, then knowing my soulmate will only hold me back. I can just keep avoiding Y/n and ignoring Phoebe's complaints about it. Eventually I'll forget all about Y/n and this annoying feeling." He finished explaining, not truly believing it but choosing to go with it to follow his dreams of being evil.
The next day when Phoebe got to school she expected to see Y/n waiting by their lockers with Cherry like always. But instead she only saw Cherry. This mixed with the fact Y/n hadn't responded to any of her texts since they left her house the day before, worried the young hero.
"Hey, Cherry have you heard from Y/n? They haven't been answering any of my texts." She asked hoping the blonde may have heard from their close friend.
Cherry checked her phone before shacking her head. "No, I haven't. Did something happen?" She asked now worried about her friend.
While opening her locker, Phoebe shrugged thinking of what all she could tell Cherry. "They've been feeling down since they told us about their powers because Max has been completely ignoring them." She explained quietly knowing that Y/n had also told Cherry about their powers since she already knew about the Thundermans' powers. "Then they left my house before we could start studying because of a text from their mom." She finished putting books in her bag.
"Maybe they got called on for a super secret hero mission and can't tell anyone about it." Cherry theorized.
Phoebe rolled her eyes at the blonde. "I doubt it, plus we're their closest friends. They still would have at least sent a text saying they'd be busy for a while. They're probably just sick and feeling down about Max ignoring them." Phoebe argued as the two started towards glass. Though in the back of her mind she couldn't help but wonder if Cherry was right.
Over the next week it was all but announced by President Kickbutt herself that y/n had been sent on a top secret mission, with no set end date. Their family's home was empty when Phoebe tried to stop by for a visit, and their phone number had been disconnect, along with all of their social media. It was like Y/n and their family never lived in Hiddenville or had an internet presence.
For Phoebe it was painful that one of her closest friends was just suddenly torn from what was supposed to be her chance at a normal life. But for Max, it was bitter sweet realizing that Y/n wasn't around anymore. It meant he didn't have to try avoiding them anymore to avoid confirming what he already basically knew to be fact. But it also meant he was even more aware of the void left behind by one of his close friends disappearing. To try and cover his own hurt he dived even further into his life of villainy.
It had been about six years since Y/n left Hiddenville and was sent on a mission to Secret Shores. Their job was to act as a secret backup hero for the protector of Secret Shores. Not even High Tide, the protector at the time, knew that they were there. They were to lay low and keep an eye on the town using their shape shifting ability and report any major threats to the Hero League, so they in-turn could assess the issue and report to the city's protector. When High Tide was presumed dead, Y/n acted as temporary protector until a new hero was assigned and then they would go back to being surveillance.
When Y/n heard that not one but three heroes were assigned to be Secret Shores new protectors, they felt relived because being the primary hero of the town slowly being over run by the Mastermind's henchman was not their cup of tea. They preferred being able to actually relax in their free time when they weren't working at their cover job or perched on a phone line keeping an eye on the people of Secret Shores. The only questions they had were, who were the new heroes and why hadn't President Kickbutt told them who was assigned there.
Deciding that it wasn't top priority knowing who the other heroes were, since if they did their job right they would never cross paths, Y/n decided to head down to Splat by the Sea for a quick lunch before starting their surveillance for the day. What they didn't expect was to feel the ache in their chest, that they had felt since leaving Hiddenville, grow stronger before they tripped on their own feet causing them to fall forward into something solid.
Only it wasn't the ground they had hit. When they opened their eyes, they were shocked to see the face of their old friend Max Thunderman only a few inches from their own. Once they processed who was holding them up, they also noticed that he had his hands on their arms holding them like he had caught before they could fall. In the few seconds it took for the two supes to register who was standing in front of them neither noticed the initials writing themselves across each other wrists.
As soon as Max realized who he had caught he immediately let go of their arms. "Hey, Y/n crazy seeing you here. Anyways gotta run. Bye." He practically yelled as he bolted in the opposite direction.
Confused Y/n just stood there trying to process what had happened. While they stood there confused, they were approached by a familiar brunette and a vaguely familiar younger girl.
"Oh my god, Y/n? Is it really you?" Phoebe said noticing her old friend standing outside of Splat by the Sea.
Shacking of their confusion, they turned to look at their friend. "Yeah, it's me." They answered, while offering a hug. "It's been a while Phoebe. What brings you to Secret Shores?" They asked moving the interaction with Max to back of their mind for a moment.
Phoebe smile as she released her friend form the hug. "Oh, you know work." She answered being vague since they were in public and couldn't risk exposing their secrets. "Why are you here? You know what let's chat over lunch." She asked in return, while motioning for her friend and sister to head into the restaurant they were outside of.
Once they were seated they began chatting for bit. Talking in hushed voices when they brought up hero work and powers. As the lunch went on Phoebe noticed something interesting on her friends wrist.
"So, when did you find your soulmate?" She asked, earning a confused look Y/n.
"What are you talking about? I haven't met—" They cut themselves off as they looked at where Phoebe had pointed halfway through their reply. "This can't be real."
It was Phoebe and Chloe's turn to be confused. "What do you mean? Clearly you met your soulmate. Who is it?" The youngest of the group asked, still easily fascinated by the idea.
Y/n raised their head to make eye contact with Phoebe. "It's Max." They said in a shaky voice, it was almost as if admitting made it more real. They were happy it was him, but given how he ran off as soon as he realized he had caught them, it didn't feel as exciting as they were expecting.
"That's great. But why do you look so upset? And why didn't he tell me?" Phoebe began to ramble out questions.
Y/n looked back at the initials that weren't present that morning on their wrist. "I don't think he knows. Or at least he didn't until just before you guys found me." They explained. Hearing this Phoebe motioned for them to keep explaining. "Right before you guys walked up, I tripped over my own feet and instead of hitting the ground Max caught me. Before I could even say anything he said hey and that he had to run and the bolted. I don't even think he noticed that we're soulmates, I think he just wanted to get away from me." They finished filling the sisters in on what happened prior to them meeting up.
"Why would he want to get away from you? I thought you guys were close before you moved." Chloe asked not having been quite old enough to fully remember when Y/n was still in Hiddenville.
Y/n shook their head in response. "Yes and no. Before you were born yeah we were really close. But after you were born I realized your family are supes and so I told them that I was as well. After finding out about my powers Max started avoiding and then I had to move here so we haven't talked since then." They filled in the youngest of the Thundermans.
Chloe just looked even more confused. "Max is just an idiot. I bet he had the same suspicion that you did and when you guys touched for the first time he panicked." Phoebe responded, trying to figure out why Max would do something like run away from their friend. "I still think it's crazy that you never once even brushed hands before now, with how close you two were." She continued.
"Either way he clearly doesn't like the idea of us being soulmates. Why else would he have avoided touching me while we were still friends and then run off like i set him on fire after accidentally touching me." Y/n said not really wanting answer, more so just wanting to vent out their feelings on the situation.
Easily picking up on the gloomy mood that had settled over the table Chloe spoke up with a suggestion. "You could just ask him why he ran off?" She offered, having already thought up a plan to get the two soulmates in a room together.
Phoebe picked up on her sister's idea and immediately agreed. "If you're thinking of what I think you are it's great plan. Let's go home, and you're coming with us." She said pulling her friend up from their seat and out of the establishment.
Y/n just followed confused as the three walked to a vacant ally before Chloe grabbed the older two's hands and teleported them to what Y/n guessed was the Thundermans Secret Shores house.
"Thunderford, Where's Max right now?" Chloe asked the houses holographic assistant.
Almost instantly the hologram appeared near the couch to answer her question. "He is in the air lair conversing with that filthy rabbit." Thunderford announced, taking the opportunity to insult the villainous rabbit that everyone found annoying.
Chloe and Phoebe smiled, both sisters on the same page to bring Y/n and Max together. "Come on Y/n time to face my idiot brother." Chloe announced as she grabbed their hand and teleported to the air lair.
The sound of Chloe teleporting immediately got Max's attention. "Go away Chloe, I'm not in the mood." He said with out turning around.
"Oh that's the plan after I do this." Chloe responded before initiating the lair's lock down mode and grabbing Colosso then teleporting out of the room, leaving the two soulmates confused.
Before Max even registered what had happened Y/n was yelling at Chloe, even though the girl was already gone. "Come on Chloe what the hell. Let me out of hear." They said hitting the sealed door, trying to ignore the feeling of Max staring at them. "What ever your plan is, it isn't going to work." They continued.
As they hit the door again Thunderford popped up from the couch in the center of the room. "I was told to inform you both, that you will be locked in here until you discuss your problems. And the code has been changed so you won't be able to bypass lock down Max." The hologram said before turning off leaving the two stunned.
Sighing, Y/n moved to sit on the couch unsure of how to address any of what has happened. "Guess we're stuck here then." They said leaning back, believing that Max would rather stay locked in the room then speak to them.
"Why would we be stuck here? We just have to talk it out, whatever IT is." Max said sitting next to them on the couch, not completely understanding why they were basically being held hostage by his siblings and house.
Y/n glanced at Max trying to figure out if he was serious or not. It didn't take long to figure out that Max was at least a little confused by the situation, Y/n decided to start with more recent events. "Why did you run away earlier?" They asked not bringing the soulmate issue up just yet.
Max stayed silent for a moment as he gathered his thoughts. "I was scared." He said simply, half expecting Y/n to laugh at how absurd it sounded. When there was no response from them he continued. "The last time I saw you was before you left Hiddenville and I wasn't exactly being a great friend back then. I was worried you would hate me for ignoring you after I found out you are also a supe. I'm sorry about that by the way, I was an idiot." He apologized after explaining.
"Is that really the only reason you ran? Also why did you ignore me back then? We were good friends and then I revealed that i have powers and you completely shut me out." Y/n began to question him on his past behavior. "I accept that you're sorry but I need to know why, Max. It hurt so bad to think that one of my best friends hated me for something I can't control." They finished holding back tears.
"Can't we just chalk it up to me being in my evil phase back then?" Max asked hoping to not have to reveal the real reason.
Y/n rolled their eyes. "No Max we can't. Because we both know that you have always been good deep down. So why did you really ignore me? Why did I leave Hiddenville thinking you hated me?" They questioned standing from the couch needing to move around before they punched something or someone.
Max followed their movement. "I was afraid then too." He said reaching for their arm before he could stop himself.
"Afraid of what? Of being friends? Of the pull you felt since the first day you saw me? Of the letters on your wrist showing up?" Y/n fired back pulling their arm away.
It took a second for Max to process their questions, and when he did he was confused. "How do you know about the pull? And what letters? I haven't meet my soulmate yet." He asked confused.
"I know about the pull because I felt it as well. Since the day you started at Hiddenville high, before Phoebe introduced us at your house, I felt a pull towards you. And when you finally started talking to me after Phoebe made you be nice to me, I felt like the pull wasn't as strong." Y/n began to explain. "And then you stopped talking to me again and the pull came back but it wasn't just a pull, it was an ache that wouldn't go away. When I left Hiddenville It felt like I was leaving a part of me behind, but I let it go because you obviously hate me." They finished explaining how they knew about the pulling feeling.
Max looked defeated, hearing about the pain that Y/n went through because of his own stupid choices. "As for the letters. Didn't you realize when you stopped me from falling earlier. That was the first time we ever touched." Y/n watched as confusion morphed in to realization on Max's face.
"That can't be true. We hung out all the time, surely we highfived or something before today?" Max asked trying to not get his hopes up.
"For god's sake Max. Look at your wrist." Y/n practically yelled, pointing at his left wrist where he wore his watch.
Startled slightly Max raised his wrist for a close look. After sliding his watch out of the way, he froze as he took in the letters printed across his skin. "Is this for real?" He asked stunned. Y/n responded by showing him their wrist where his own initials were. "Holy shit I'm so sorry." he apologized again.
"You don't deserve a soulmate who made you feel hated. Or who used to be a villain and stole his family's super powers and ruined prom for a bunch of people. You deserve someone better." He began to ramble as reality sunk in. "I treated you so poorly and then I ran away when we should have bee celebrating. I fucked up so bad. What can I do to make it up to you?" He asked franticly, wishing he go back in time and undo all of the stupid things he's done.
Y/n just laughed at his panicked state. "You don't have to make it up to me Max. You just have to promise to do better. And with all the hero work you've been doing the past few years, I know you won't let me down again." They said with a gentle smile.
Max smiled in return. "Okay but I am going to make it up to you some how. I was a terrible friend and even shittier soulmate." He finished by offering them a hug, which they gladly excepted.
After a few moments Y/n pulled away, happy to have everything worked out. "So, how do we get out of here?" Y/n asked noticing that the girls haven't lifted the lock down.
Max looked around also realizing they were still locked in. "Phoebe probably forgot about us. Thunderford." Max called out hoping the hologram could help them out. "Where did Phoebe go?" He asked as soon as the hologram popped up.
"She and Chloe went shopping. Something about celebrating you find your soulmate." The Hologram answered with a smirk.
Y/n laughed at this. Of course the sisters would run off to plan a party after finding out Max had finally found his soulmate. "Well can you let us out of here or get them back here so they can let us out?" They asked the virtual assistant.
As Thunderford nodded Max stopped him. "Wait, I have a better idea. What if Thunderford let's us out and then puts the lair back into lock down mode with out telling the girls, and we just go celebrate by ourselves." Max offered. "That way we don't have to deal with their questions until later?" He suggested
Thinking for a second, Y/n nodded in agreement. "Great. Now Thunderford let us out and re-lock the lair but don't tell Phoebe or Chloe that we left. If they ask say we still haven't spoken." Max instructed the hologram. Thunderford sighed but nodded as he followed Max's request.
After finally leaving the air lair, Max and Y/n set out to make up for lost time and to catch up on the six years they've been apart.

His theory started when he caught you watching him as he was studying with you for a test. Phoebe had teased him relentlessly that morning when he informed his parents he'd be late home from school because he was joining you in the library. The family proceeded to rush around looking for signs the world was ending and Max rolled his eyes as he laughed sarcastically on his way out of the door.
From your spot at the top of the table, you were smiling softly as he worked quietly next to you and he raised an eyebrow as he dropped his pen onto the table.
"What?" He gasped, "Is there something in my hair?"
"No," You shook your head as he fixed his hair. "Your hair looks great."
You returned your gaze to your notebook, glancing at the textbook that was angled so you could both read it. Max forgot the moment as he smirked and mimicked your actions.
The next day, you were sitting outside at lunchtime as you exchanged tales of your day so far and Max noticed your stare as he took a drink of soda.
"What?" He asked.
You shook your head with a smile, "Nothing." You tried to divert his attention by talking about something else, but the moment lingered in his mind for the rest of the day.
He began to noticed it happened often. You would observe him a lot, whether he was reading, ranting about his sister, or simply sitting next to you. And after a few days, Max decided that there was only one reason why - you knew his secret.
So, Max did the only thing he could think of; tell Phoebe.
"What - how - do you know what this means?"
Max nodded in agreement. "This is bad. Very bad."
The twins spent the next ten minutes freaking out about being forced to move again because their identity was exposed.
"What did she say to you exactly?"
"Well...nothing. Yet." Max replied.
"We need to find out what she knows before we tell mom and dad."
The plan was simple, Max arranged to meet with you at Wong's Pizza Palace, to find out how much you knew about them. Phoebe would be close by to listen in to your conversation.
Max drummed his fingers on the table anxiously, checking his watch before sitting back to talk to Phoebe who was sitting at the table behind him.
"She's never late."
Phoebe turned to look around the room and quickly dove down when you entered. Max straightened, swallowing thickly, as you walked towards his table.
"Hi," You took a seat across from him and set your bag down next to you. "This is a surprise."
"Really? Why? W-What's surprising about it?" He stammered, laughing weakly. "I just want to spend time with my lady."
You raised an eyebrow, "Okay..."
You ordered pizza's and drinks, and while you waited you sent him a smile, resting your arms on the table, asking about his day.
Max adjusted the collar of his shirt, jumping around a lot in his story but you merely laughed it off. And it hit him then how serious it was. He was used to moving, but if he told his parents you knew his secret, he'd have to leave you behind. He'd never hear your laugh again, or your smile. He'd never hold your hand or be on the receiving end of your hugs. The way you stepped into his embrace like you always belonged there, and the feel of your lips on his. There would be no more late night phone calls and even a little thing like having lunch together - he'd miss it all.
You noticed the change in his features, and leaned forward slightly, "Max, what's wrong?"
He cleared his throat, "How long have you known?"
"Known...what?"
"About me, and my family. Our powers." You blinked, so he elaborated, "That I'm the son of Thunderman." Your eyes widened. "Are you going to tell people? Because you're looking at me like you have no idea what...I'm talking about. Oh, no."
"Way to go, Max!"
Your eyebrows furrowed when you heard her voice. "Phoebe?"
She stood up from the table behind Max and stopped next to you. "Do you really not know who we are?"
"I thought I did." You glanced between the twins warily.
"Move!" Wong barked and Phoebe quickly sat next to Max. "Pizza!"
You thanked her before turning to the twins who were whispering, glancing at you now and then.
"You told her! Have you lost your mind?"
"I thought she knew!"
Phoebe gestured to your bewildered gaze. "Does she look like she knew?"
Max shook his head at his sister as he turned to meet your gaze. "You didn't know that we were superheroes?"
You shook your head. "Although it explains a lot. You are kind of weird." You flashed a smile as you took a sip of soda.
Phoebe tilted her head from side to side for a moment before sighing. "We have to tell dad."
"What - why?" Max asked.
"Because you told her who we are and exposed our secret." Phoebe spoke slowly.
"I won't tell anyone." You told her.
"And we could stay here." Max added, looking at you then his sister.
Phoebe considered it, "You really won't tell anyone?"
You shook your head. "I wouldn't hurt you like that."
Phoebe took a deep breath. "Okay. But we still have to tell dad. But for now, we'll keep it amongst ourselves."
Max sighed in relief before turning to you. "There's still one thing I don't understand."
"Just one?" Phoebe raised an eyebrow at him.
Max ignored her. "Why have you been staring at me? And smiling."
You shrugged, "I think you're pretty. And I love you. It makes me smile."
Phoebe smiled, letting out a quiet "aww". You blushed, looking at your hands. Max dismissed her by pushing her away from the table and walked around to your side of the booth, sitting next to you.
"How pretty?"
"Annoyingly so."
He chuckled, lifting a hand to your cheek as he leaned in. "Does this mean you won't run screaming after I tell you my powers?"
"Depends how cool they are."
Max feigned offence, eliciting giggles from you and he smiled as he bridged the gap, kissing you softly.
Later that day, Max took you to his house and showed you the secrets hidden in every room. Starting with the photograph by the door.
"Aw, look at you in your little costume."
Max rolled his eyes, "Highly sophisticated -"
"Spanx."
Max pouted while Phoebe smirked at his discomfort.
"Aw, the little symbol!"
"Can you stop saying little while you're pointing at me?" Max whined.
Phoebe crinkled her nose in disgust and you turned with a soft smile. "Sorry."
The two siblings continued with their tour and you were stunned by how much you had failed to notice before. But the twins were in their element as they excitedly bounced around from one thing to the next.
"I wanted to show her that -"
"Too late!"
The tour ended with his bedroom and although you had seen it before, Max turned with his arms outstretched, "Ta da!"
You looked around his room at the various devices he kept lying around - normally tucked out of sight when you visited.
"What is all this?" You asked, approaching the table.
Max rattled off devices but you were shocked when the rabbit began to speak.
"That's Doctor Colosso. A villain our dad captured."
"The rabbit talked." You blinked, "Wait, he was evil?"
Doctor Colosso cleared his throat, "Well, doesn't someone sound a little jud-"
"Don't finish that sentence." Max warned.
To diffuse the tension, Phoebe said, "He used to call this his lair."
You looked at the brunette, "Lair?"
"He wanted to be a supervillain."
You turned to your boyfriend who scratched the back of his neck, "I changed my mind, didn't I?"
"Most days, yes." Phoebe agreed.
Urgently moving the conversation forward when he saw your frown, Max insisted on showing you their powers and you sat on the edge of his bed as you observed them. They landed on their feet with matching grins.
"So, impressed yet?"
You shrugged your shoulders, "Meh."
"Meh? Meh?!"
You slowly smiled, "Alright, it was pretty cool."
As weeks passed, you began to get more involved in their antics and with every new threat, you grew more concerned about their safety. Max was thrilled to finally be able to share that part of his life with you and you would often insist on going with them, and if they refused, you followed them when you could. It had led to many spats in the beginning, but it became common for you to be involved with or hold knowledge of his missions.
Despite his excitement at showing you the part of his life he kept hidden, Max quietly worried that it would change the way you stared at him with adoration.
For months, he fretted internally, and it affected how he viewed being a super. Phoebe confronted him when she noticed his changes and he reluctantly confided in his twin who had assured him that he had nothing to worry about. But Max couldn't fully shake the feeling.
And when he saw the subtle downward tilt of your smile or the way you looked at him while he was working on his latest invention while you studied, he knew he wasn't imagining it. Something had changed.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I just like watching you work."
"No, you look like you're about to cry." Max dropped the drill and approached where you were sitting on his bed. "And if looking at me makes you cry then I want to know why."
You shook your head, looking away. "I'm just thinking, that's all."
"Well, tell me what you're thinking about." Max licked his lips when you hesitated. "Come on, it can't be bad. Unless you plan to break up with me. Then I don't want to hear it."
You looked at him in surprise, "Why would I break up with you?"
Max awkwardly chuckled, "Well, I...I just assumed because of the way you look at me."
You shook your head, "That's not it."
His gaze turned pleading, "Then what is it?"
You exhaled, "I just...worry about you."
His frown deepened when you explained how it felt, afraid he would never return from a mission, worried that you were on different trajectories, and fretted he'd decide that he didn't need a non-super holding him back.
You wiped a tear that trickled down your cheek, and Max brought you into his arms.
"How could you ever think that I'd break up with you? Are you kidding me? I was afraid you were breaking up with me because you didn't want the chaos that comes with...well, me."
You shook your head on his chest. "I didn't mean to make you feel that way, I just couldn't stop worrying and once the door opened I couldn't close it."
Max pulled back slightly to meet your teary gaze, "I'm not going anywhere."
More tears fell as you whispered, "You can't promise me that."
"No, but my dad is still here and he can't use the door." His lips lifted when you laughed softly. Ever since he told his parents you knew their secrets, you'd seen Hank fly through the roof to fetch snacks from all over the world much to Barb's exasperation. "I can't promise I won't get hurt, o-or worse..." You glanced down briefly. "But I will always be fighting with everything I have to come back to you. Every time. Okay?"
You wrapped your arms around his neck tightly and he returned the embrace, kissing your head. "I love you."
Max smiled, both relieved that you weren't breaking up with him and that he had managed to comfort you a little. "I love you too." He paused for a moment, "Next time, talk to me and spare me the heart attack."
You smiled as you pulled back, "Deal."
Max placed a hand on your cheek and kissed you tenderly. Your notebook and textbooks were pushed aside as you laid down with your head on his chest. Max turned up his music to drown out Doctor Colosso's complaints and you smiled softly when he pressed his lips to your head.
You tilted your head up to gaze up at him and Max smiled when he saw the way you stared at him. There was still some worry there, and he doubted it would ever go away, as his parents still fretted over one another when they were facing villains, but he hadn't truly realized how much he missed seeing how much you loved him so openly displayed. Your eyes were his favorite feature due to how expressive they were and over the years he learned how to read your emotions through them.
And as time went by, the adoration, the love, the fondness, you held for him never went away.
How Was Your Date? (Max Thunderman x GN!Reader)
Summary: Max gets home from his date with you, and his family can tell how it went just from how he's acting, but they ask anyways. Pronouns: You/Yours, They/Them Warnings: None, Pure Fluff Word Count: 1.2k A/N: Max is my bias, my muse, I love him I fear!
The Thunderman family—your typical suburban neighborhood family. Well, they felt like that about two percent of the time. The parents were loving and caring toward their four children, always proud and always there for dinner, even if things got a little chaotic.
Their beautiful children, were a reflection of them in the best ways—well, most of them. Phoebe, Nora, and Billy were all helping out in the kitchen in their own ways.
Phoebe was setting the table using her telekinesis—still helping, nonetheless.
Nora was using her heat vision to cook the meatloaf just right while her mom worked on the sides for dinner.
Billy, rather than running around the house with his superspeef, was actually just sitting at the table—keeping things decent. He said he was tired, but everyone knew he never got tired. He just wanted to show his parents some grace.
A typical suburban family.
The only Thunderman not at the home was Max—though no one was really expecting him in the first place. He was never home on time, and even when he was, he’d usually stay holed up in his room to avoid socializing with his ‘goody goody’ family.
Barb and Hank, Mr. and Mrs. Thunderman, finally sat at the table with the kids, smiling.
“Well, dig in!” Barb said cheerfully, ready to hear about everyone’s day.
But before anyone could even lift a fork, the front door opened—and with it came soft laughter and a slight cold breeze.
“It is *so* cold outside. How are you not freezing?” asked an unfamiliar voice as the door closed behind them.
The Thunderman family turned their heads toward living room. Through the entryway, they saw Max standing at the door with someone. The stranger was bundled in layers and still shivering, while Max wore just a T-shirt. He was angled just enough to block their face, so no one at the table could get a clear look.
Phoebe leaned forward, “Do you think it’s an accomplice and he’s hiding their identity?” she whsipered, straining her neck for a better view.
No one responded. The energy of the room felt different than usual. This wasn’t one of Max’s usual friends or ‘projects’. This was something different—something none of them could quite place.
Then it happened. A sound they hadn’t heard outside of Max’s lair. A sound they hadn’t heard so genuinely in years: Max laughed. A real, full laugh—his head falling back. As he turned slightly, they caught a glimpse of his flushed cheeks.
“Trust me, I’m pretty used to the cold,” he told you, zipping up the jacket you were wearing.
“I’m scared you’ll get sick, you shouldn’t have given me your jacket,” you pouted, placing a hand on his forehead.
His hair shifted under your touch, and he smiled warmly, gazing at you. “It’s fine. I didn’t want *you* getting sick.” he murmured, taking your hand off his forehead to hold and holding it to warm it in his.
“I’m not taking this home with me,” you said, reaching for the zipper.
“Yes, you are,” he replied playfully, zipping it back up, “You already made me come home early instead of walking you back, so the least you could do is keep the jacket.”
You rolled your eyes and shook your head, turning it—only to lock eyes with the entire Thunderman family staring intensely. You froze awkwardly and raised a small wave.
Max furrowed his brows in confusion, tilting his head before his eyes slightly widened. You could tell a small lightbuld went off in his head as his face dropped in horror. His ears turned bright red as he huffed and straightened up with a hiss through his teeth. He followed your gaze to his family and stopped himself from expressing his embarrassment.
He raised his hand stiffly. “Family,” he greeted awkwardly, clearly wishing he could’ve just walked you home.
Barb and Hank scrambled to their feet, nearly tripping over themselves in their attempt to greet you smoothly—which failed, especially when they saw you lower your hand and stifle a laugh.
“Hello!” Barb beamed, waving enthusiastically as Hank slung an arm around her shoulders. The other three kids reamined frozen and uncomfortable at the table.
Hank nodded at Max, “You’re home,” he said bluntly. Then, noticing Max’s alarmed glance towards you, he added quickly, “15 minutes before curfew…*that we weren’t able to set on you,*” he mumbled the last part under his breath.
Max shot him an unimpressed look before glancing back ar you to make sure you hadn’t heard. You clearly you hadn’t, judging by how you hugged his arm with a cheerful grin.
“I wanted to make sure he was home around dinner!” you explained. “My family doesn’t eat until later, and when he said you all eat early, I had to rush us back so he could eat.”
Barb placed a hand on her head and cooed, “Aw, that’s sweet, thank you.”
“No problem!” you replied, scrunching your nose and shrugging.
After a beat of silence and some awkward stares with the other family members, Max turned to you, hoping his family would take the hint.
Thankfully, they did—for the most part. They still stared from the table, but at least they stopped hovering.
“I think..I will go now,” you said, suppressing a laugh, Max groaned, burying his face in your shoulder.
“Don’t laugh!” he whispered, pulling back with the most unintimidating glare.
You held your hands up in surrender and he pulled you in by your waist, rubbing your noses together.
“Sorry! Sorry—they’re sweet,” you said honestly, cupping his face. “But seriously, I do have to go.”
He groaned. “I know.”
You kissed his cheek and opened the door, shivering once again. Then you remembered—you were still wearing his jacket.
“Your jacket-”
“Just keep it until tomorrow.” Max interrupted quickly, leaning on the doorframe. “I *will* see you tomorrow, right?”
“Eleven o’clock sharp,” you hummed, pecking his lips before heading off. You waved goodbye as you walked away.
Max closed the door behind you, resting his back against it. He sighed, face flushed, a goofy smile spreading across his face. Even his family could see the glint in his eyes.
After a moment, he pushed off the door and headed for the tunnel, kicking the button for his lair.
“Max!” Nora called after him. “What about dinner?”
He turned lazily, grin softening. “I ate while I was out,” he shrugged as the lair door opened.
No one knew if that was true, but they decided not to press too much on that part.
Barb called out, “Well, before you go—how was your date?”
He paused and met her gaze. His eyes glimmered and his cheeks darkened.
“It was great,” he said simply, nodding before sliding down to his lair and leaving his family behind.
Dinner was fairly quiet that night, but soft grins lingered on each their faces.
The Thundermans—your typical suburban neighborhood family. Hank and Barb, loving and caring, always there for their four kids. Always proud. Always around—even when nights bring out unexpected news.
And their beautiful children—reflections of them in the best ways.
All four of them.

Strange things were happening in Hiddenville and Phoebe was determined to figure out what caused it. It all started at breakfast one Saturday morning when Max spent a little longer on his hair - something she didn't think was possible. On the weekends, he usually slept in, but her twin's sleeping habits were the least of her concerns as he left the house just after nine am with a backpack that he had kept over his shoulder after he made himself toast instead of stealing it from someone else's plate.
When he returned in time for dinner, his mood only seemed to have improved. Everyone was stunned when he took plates from their mother, saying, "Let me help with that," and for a brief moment, Phoebe wondered if her twin was replaced with an alien.
A short while after dinner, as he did a few nights a week, Hank continued their training sessions and Phoebe noticed how much attention he was paying to their father, for once not making jokes, just standing with his arms crossed, appearing to be listening intently.
The next day, Max stayed in his lair, only coming out for food which he took down to his bedroom. Phoebe began to speculate about where he went yesterday and why he hadn't come out of his room most of the day. When their mother called them for dinner, Max left his lair and Phoebe snuck inside, looking around at the dimly lit bedroom/lair for any clues as to what Max was doing - suspecting he was building a new device.
"There has to be something in here somewhere." She muttered.
"Talking to yourself again?" Dr. Colosso spoke up from his cage.
Ignoring the former supervillain, now rabbit, as she walked to one of the desks, noticing how tidy it was. She looked around the bedroom and realized it had been tidied - impressive considering she had never seen Max clean anything.
"He's definitely up to something." She sighed when her mother called her name and headed upstairs, joining the family at the dining table.
If Max felt her suspicious stare, he showed no signs, talking to Chloe who asked him where he went yesterday.
"The park?" Phoebe echoed in disbelief. "You went to the park?"
Max shrugged.
"You spent all day at the park?"
"Yeah, he just said that. Try to keep up." Billy told her.
When Max finished his dinner he stunned the table into silence as he complimented his mother's cooking and noticed the stares he received when he carried his plate to the sink. "What?"
"Is he possessed?" Nora whispered to her father who was equally perplexed.
"What? I've put a plate in the sink before."
Everyone shook their heads except Phoebe who was more certain that he was up to something. Max took the slide down to his bedroom and while her father was distracted by the television and Nora and Billy were upstairs, Chloe sitting in the kitchen with their mother as she washed the dishes, Phoebe snuck into the lair which was in darkness. She flicked on a light and quickly noticed her brother was nowhere to be found. She climbed onto the rock when she saw the window was open slightly, allowing him to come and go as he pleased.
"Max!" She grumbled, growing more certain that he was up to something.
On Monday morning, she woke up early, preparing to confront her twin about what he was doing on their way to school, but he was already gone. Phoebe hadn't expected to see him at school, believing he was ditching for the day, but Max was standing with his friends, typing on his phone. The curve of his lips made her uneasy. He was up to no good. She could feel it.
The opportunity to confront him didn't come until later that night when they finished their training session with their father and she followed her twin into the kitchen, crossing her arms as he took a sip of water.
"What?"
"I will figure it out." She warned.
"Okay…figure out what exactly?" Max asked.
"Whatever you're up to. I can feel it, you're sneaking out of the house and I will find out where you go, Max."
Max chuckled, "Wow, you are really paranoid."
"Ah-ha! So you are up to something!" She pointed at him, raising an eyebrow.
"I don't know what you think I've done or what I'm doing but I am completely innocent." He said, holding his head higher. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have totally innocent things to do in my room."
He sipped his water as he walked down the stairs into his bedroom and Phoebe realized that it was the first time she could recall him ever calling his lair a bedroom - used to him arguing that it was a villain's lair where he was set on becoming a supervillain.
She opened the hatch quietly, hearing his voice carry up the slide as he spoke to someone.
"It's not that I don't want to see you - I do! My sister is getting suspicious and I'll lay low for a while until she forgets about it." He paused as the person on the other end of the phone spoke, answering when they were done. "Tomorrow? Sure!"
Phoebe frowned as she closed the hatch. "What are you planning, Max?" She whispered.
The next morning, Phoebe did not want to risk Max sneaking off again and woke up early, racing after him when he left for school early and kept a safe distance, hiding behind trees or newspaper stands when he glanced over his shoulder.
He was definitely up to something, given how cautious he was.
Phoebe followed her twin to the high school which was almost deserted at this time aside from one or two teachers. She followed him inside and hid while Max looked around, and Phoebe hid behind a vending machine as his phone chimed.
A smile formed on his lips and he looked at the stairs, beginning to climb them two at a time when a girl appeared around the corner. Max's smile softened as he stood two steps below her, matching her height.
"Hey,"
"Sorry for all the smoke and mirrors." You placed a hand on his shoulder and Max shook his head.
"I understand. Really, I do. You have no idea."
You smiled softly as you wrapped your arms around his neck, burying your head in his shoulder as his arms embraced your waist, lifting you briefly. You placed a hand on his cheek as your feet touched the ground, and Phoebe was stunned when you kissed her brother.
Was this his plan? Some kind of love potion?
Your bracelet beeped and you sighed as you pulled away, sending Max an apologetic smile. "Sorry. Duty calls."
"I'll see you later?" He asked hopefully.
You nodded, "I think I'm getting the hang of using a cell phone." You stepped forward to kiss him passionately one last time before running up to the second floor, while Max sighed, hooking his thumbs in the straps of his backpack.
Phoebe stepped out as he turned and his eyes widened when he saw his sister, her expression telling him all he needed to know.
"What are you doing here?"
"I followed you, Max." She explained. "I knew you were up to something. Who is she? A daughter of a supervillain?"
Max shook his head, descending the staircase, "No, and I can't tell you. Just leave it alone, Phoebe. It's better that way."
He walked away and she shook her head as she turned to watch him go. The lights began to flicker, the ground trembling for a few seconds, and she missed the smirk on her twin's lips as he headed to his locker. Phoebe decided to chase after you and demand to know what you were doing with her brother. But all the doors were locked - except one.
She climbed the short staircase to the rooftop and her eyebrows furrowed when she saw no one was there. Deciding to use the extra time before class to check her essay for the fifth time, Phoebe headed to the library, writing in her notebook about the encounter in the hallway.
Max hadn't said your name so she simply documented you as 'the girl from the stairs'. What she couldn't figure out is, was Max tempting you to the dark side or were you pulling him further away from his superhero family and taking him one step closer to his dreams of becoming a supervillain?
That night, she waited for Max to sneak out of his window to meet you, but he never did. She wondered what happened to change his plans and if he told you that she knew.
The next day passed by uneventfully. Max didn't leave early for school and Phoebe began to question if the plans you had made were called off when she saw Max leaving his lair and raced after him. Tonight she would get to the bottom of it. She was sure of it.
Phoebe was confused as to where her twin was going until he entered the park and realized he had circled around several times in case she was following.
"It's going to take more than that, Max." She muttered as she kept a certain amount of distance between them.
Max approached a statue and you crept up behind him with a smile when his back was turned, and Phoebe was not surprised by your ability to fly, creating enough height to cover his eyes with your hands.
"Guess who?"
"Uh, Wonder Woman?"
You laughed as you removed your hands. "Very funny."
Max turned as you landed on the ground and you smiled when he placed a hand on your cheek, his eyebrows furrowing when he saw the healing bruise on your head.
"What happened?"
"He caught me by surprise. It won't happen again. Although he finally discovered which metal slows my advanced healing ability, it still heals faster than non-superheroes like you." You turned your head to kiss his palm before meeting his concerned gaze. You heard the sound of stones crunching and moved away, looking around alertly. "Someone is here."
Max looked around the park and knew if it was your archnemesis he would have attacked by now, and quickly deduced whose footsteps you heard.
"Phoebe." He grumbled.
You raised an eyebrow at your boyfriend, "Who is Phoebe?"
"My twin sister," Max called for her to reveal herself and you looked between the twins warily. "I told you not to follow me!"
"I had to stop you from joining them." Phoebe held her ground and you glanced at Max.
"What did you tell her?"
"Nothing!" He turned to his sister, "Phoebe, get out of here!"
Your back straightened when your archnemesis appeared behind Phoebe and you pushed her aside, taking the brunt of his heat blast. "Look out!"
You recovered quickly, performing several back handsprings and turning your body slightly, fists clenched as your civilian clothes changed into your superhero outfit.
"Max, take your sister and get her to safety."
Phoebe shook her head, "No, we can -" Max covered her mouth as he pulled her behind the statue as you faced off against the supervillain. "Okay, what is going on?"
Max revealed your superhero name and explained to a stunned Phoebe that you met in Metroburg when he had ditched school to spend the day there and used your shield to protect him from a supervillain's power. You assumed he was a non-superhero and Max was too stunned at the time to correct you, leading him to continue the charade that he had no powers throughout your relationship.
The twins felt the ground shake when you took off into the air and weakened the supervillain with your powers until he lassoed you, the electric shocks causing you to fall to the grass.
"We have to do something!" Phoebe exclaimed.
"I know! I know! Just stay here!"
Max stepped out from behind the statue with the knowledge you could end your relationship for what he was about to do. He believed you enjoyed dating a non-super, someone who could teach you how to use a cell phone or go to the movies with you, teaching you how to blend into a crowd. Max used his knowledge of Hiddenville to give you an escape, even if it was only for a few hours.
"Hey, what's up big guy?" You looked at your boyfriend as you flinched from the shockwaves pulsing through your body.
"Max, run!"
He sent your archnemeses back a few feet using a telekinetic blast and released the lasso around you with his telekinesis. You moved to stand beside him, his twin flanking his other side.
"You have powers?"
"I'm the son of Thunderman." He explained.
Your eyes widened at the revelation, but your attention was drawn to the supervillain getting to his feet.
"You ever fought a supervillain before?" You asked.
"We did help capture Dark Mayhem," Phoebe answered.
You glanced at the twins, your gaze lingering on Max, releasing a shaky breath as you nodded, accepting their help. "Fine."
"This is so awesome!" Max grinned. You swatted his arm and he cleared his throat. "Right, sorry."
You put up a forcefield around the three of you when your archnemeses blasted flames towards you. When he pulled back to try again, Max and Phoebe froze his hands and you flew towards him, kicking his chest, knocking him to the ground. You felt a hand pull you back and rolled over Max's back, shielding him as he used his telekinesis to hit the supervillain with a dumpster.
You relaxed your stance when the supervillain was pinned to the ground with the weight of the dumpster and while Phoebe remarked about how easy that was, you put up your forcefield to block the fire spreading from his hands, melting the ice and propelling him into the air.
"Coward!" Phoebe called.
Max had heard enough about your archnemesis to know that he did not want his sister to anger the injured supervillain enough that he came back. He froze her with his freeze breath and you tapped your necklace, your civilian clothes returning - an invention Max had created to grant you less time to worry about a wardrobe change.
"So…" You began, "son of Thunderman…yeah, you kept that quiet." You crossed your arms and looked at Phoebe who was beginning to thaw herself out before meeting his guilty gaze. "Why did you lie, Max?"
"You wanted to forget you were a superhero, and I liked that you didn't know I am the son of Thunderman." He sighed, "I would've told you, you know…eventually. But I just wanted you to know me for me, not my family."
You shook your head, opening your mouth to speak when Phoebe broke free and glared at her twin. You glanced between the two siblings, taking a step back. "Thanks, for all the help tonight." You sent them a small smile.
"Wait -" Max stepped forward and sighed when the ground rumbled as you shot into the sky. Phoebe frowned when she saw him close his eyes in quiet resignation.
The next day, he spent his time at school before hiding away in his lair until it was time for another training session with their father. When it was over, Max leaned against the kitchen counter, checking his cell phone, his mood worsening when he saw he had no new messages.
As she observed her brother head to his lair, sulking as he took the stairs, Phoebe discovered the catalyst leading to his strange behavior. Falling for another superhero - a highly respected one despite your young age. She understood why he was changing his habits, and paying more attention to their father during training. She knew she was to blame for it falling apart, although she knew you would have found out about Max's powers on your own eventually, and decided to fix it.
Max was listening to music as he worked on his latest invention when he saw you at his window. He was surprised to see you and hastily climbed onto the rock, opening the window to let you in.
"Hey," You greeted with a timid smile.
"Hey," His eyebrows furrowed as he took in your civilian clothes. "what are you doing here?"
You raised an eyebrow at him, "You sent me a message asking me to come here. You had something to show me?"
"What? I never sent any message -" Max took out his cell phone from his jeans and grumbled his twin's name a few moments later.
You smiled in amusement, looking around his bedroom, and approaching his workbench. "What are you working on?"
"Uh," He scratched the nape of his neck as he followed you, "civilians have this thing called a smartwatch, so I gathered a few spare parts and tried to outdo it."
"Tried?" You sent him a knowing smile and Max grinned.
"And succeeded."
You listened as he put the watch on his wrist and showed you the features. You smiled fondly, feeling the atmosphere shift as he awkwardly set the watch down. "I'm sorry for disappearing like that it -"
"No, I get it." He shrugged off but you grabbed his hand and stopped him from turning away.
"No, you don't." You took a deep breath as you wet your lips, moving to sit on the foot of his bed. "I thought you were just a civilian. I didn't want to bring you into my life because I was afraid of putting you in danger." You clasped your hands on your lap as he sat beside you. "But you held your own. You were really great out there, Max."
Max smiled softly, bashfully rubbing the back of his neck. "Thanks." He cleared his throat, "We made a good team."
You giggled, nodding in agreement. "We did." You looked at your hands and Max wet his lips anxiously.
"I'm sorry for making you believe that I was a non-super." He apologized. "I wanted you to get to know me, so that when I did tell you the truth you weren't won over by my parents."
You shook your head, "I'm over it." You noticed the way his shoulders slumped slightly and quickly added, "No, not you! The fact you have powers. I'll never get over you."
At this, Max perked up and your eyebrows furrowed when music began to play before he could speak and looked over your shoulder as Max addressed the animal in the cage.
"Dr. Colosso?" You stood up and approached the rabbit in the cage on his workbench.
"Yeah, he was turned into a rabbit," Max explained. "And kind of my best friend."
"Kind of?" Colosso shrieked.
You looked at Max with a smile and he hushed the former supervillain who ranted about their friendship. "You are full of surprises."
Max chuckled, raising his arms, "That's me. Surpriso boy - wait, scratch that. Forget I ever said it."
You covered your mouth as you failed to suppress your giggles. "No, I don't think I can."
Max smiled when you leaned against his workbench as you caught your breath. "I'll invent something, don't worry."
You smiled softly when he tentatively raised his hand and stepped forward as he placed a hand on your cheek. "I must confess a secret of my own." You began, earning a curious raise of his eyebrow. "The reason I was so interested in the non-super world is because I wanted to connect with you. You know, when I thought you weren't a superhero."
Max's features lit up, "Really?"
You nodded, biting the inside of his cheek. "Can we start over? Well," You paused as you stepped closer, placing your hands on his chest. "not right from the start."
His other hand rose to your cheek as he exhaled a relieved breath, nodding distractedly, his eyes flickering to your lips. "Yeah, I'd - we should -"
You closed the gap between you and Max wrapped his arms around you, bringing your body closer as he kissed you passionately. You cupped his jaw in your hands, smiling against his lips as you melted into the kiss, matching his intensity.
Phoebe slowly closed the hatch and smiled to herself as she took a seat on the cushion. "The power of love." She whispered as she headed upstairs.
Sleepover at the Thundermans😴
You, Phoebe, and Max have an arrangement for sleepovers. You spend Saturday with Max and Sunday with Phoebe. This morning is no exception, except Max wants to make it one.

The sun was shining, birds were chirping on this beautiful Sunday morning. You had spent the day and night over at the Thunderman’s house. During the day you spent it with your boyfriend, Max, who always made it his job to keep your energy high when you were there. Now it was time for you to say goodbye to Max and spend the next day with Phoebe, however there was one thing, or rather one person, getting in the way of that.
“Good morning Max,” you yawned, stretching your arms out.
“Good morning gorgeous,” your boyfriend let out watching you, almost as if he was studying your actions.
You took a deep breath through your nose and out your mouth, ready to start the day.
“Alright time to get ready to hang out with Phoebe!” you exclaimed, taking the covers off of you.
“Wait, no,” Max whined, grabbing the hand closest to him, “please don’t leave me especially for, ugh her” he said, making a barfing noise.
“Oh come on Max, I have to go. Phoebe is going to get mad if I’m not up there in the next 15 minutes,”
“Oh yeah, how do you know?”
“Because she won’t stop texting me,” you said grabbing your phone from the bed-side table, “Good morning bestie. Can’t wait for you to come over. I know you’re awake. You have 15 minutes to be up here before I come down there. I know you’re reading this I can hear you,” you read the text messages out loud for Max to hear, urgency in your tone.
“But I don’t want you to leave” Max pouted, shaking and kicking his legs in dismay.
You got up and out of the bed and grabbed your overnight bag, making your way to the bathroom to freshen up. Soon after you walked out in a new outfit, comfortable and practical for whatever Phoebe had planned for today.
“I have to go Max, this was the deal. I spend Saturday with you and then I spend Sunday with Phoebe. That’s how this works,” you noted.
“Yeah but it’s not fair,” he grumbled getting out of the bed to come over to where you were standing, “You’re my girlfriend,” he said emphasizing the *my* part of his statement.
“And I’m her best friend,” you said mimicking the way he emphasized my, with *her*, “I have to spend my time with you guys fairly. If I spend all my time with you, Phoebe gets jealous. And if I spend all my time with Phoebe, you get jealous,”
“Yeah but-”
“But nothing,” another voice interrupted, “you had your fun with your girlfriend, now it’s time for me to have fun with my friend,” Phoebe instructed with a stern voice.
You turned to face the brunette girl. “I’ll be right there in a minute, just let me say bye to Max,” you waved at her and gave her a small smile.
“Oh yeah no problem,” she said, giving you the thumbs up, while still standing her place on the stairs.
“She means you need to leave,” Max snapped, shooing her off with his hands.
Phoebe rolled her eyes and looked at you, “I’m setting a timer for 2 minutes,” she explained tapping rapidly on her phone, “after that I’m coming back down here and y/n will come upstairs with me no matter what,” she declared looking Max in the eyes with a serious look. The other twin made her way back up the stairs to wait for you, once you heard the door shut, the both of you exhaled.
“She sounds serious, I better go now before she comes back” you said, grabbing your bag and making your way to follow Phoebe to the living room.
“Okay, okay,” Max gave in, “just one last kiss,” he said, putting his hands on your waist to pull you close.
“Fine, just one last kiss,”
Max dipped his head in to kiss you, putting his lips on your much softer ones. You tilted your head to deepen the kiss. You took in every second of this moment almost as if it would be your last chance to make out ever again. The two of you embraced each other tightly. Only pulling away when you heard frantic knocking on the other side of the door.
“That’s my cue to leave,” you let out sighing, turning the handle of the door to greet a very angry yet excited Phoebe. You gave her a quick hug, “I’m all yours for the next 24 hours” you smiled, turning back to wave your boyfriend goodbye.
Knowing Max, he will most likely come upstairs to disturb your time with his twin sister, but for now Phoebe has you all to herself.
