So if you hadn’t heard, THE VIEW UPSTAIRS is coming to London July 18th - August 24th 2019 at the Soho Theatre!
This is a big thing for me (and my friend) and I really want this show to get what it deserves! So here’s a synopsis:
Wes, a millennial fashion designer, buys an old 70s gay bar to use as a studio, gets sent back in time to find out that in 1973 the bar was burnt down in an arson attack and 30-something LGBTQ+ people were killed. In the midst of all this, he falls in love with Patrick, a runaway who makes up stories to forgot hardships.
The best (or worst) part about this musical is that it is a true story of the former UpStairs Lounge in New Orleans. The characters are creations but the terrorism was real.
Queer stories are not repsented enough in the media ESPECIALLY this one, which was the worst attack on LGBTQ+ people’s until recent times. Bet you’d never heard of it, right?
Anyway! On happier notes, it has POC rep, age diversity, queer diversity (not just gay white boys hm) and draG QUEENS. Not to mention the cast recording is INCREDIBLE. If you want to understand the story better whilst listening to the recording, this article should help you out!
Again, support Queer theatre, support non-commercial theatre and SUPPORT QUEER CREATORS.
