Max Webster was like what if I adapted a classic play and cast doctor who as the main character. What if.
And it had to be my two MOST favourite plays of all time!

“Oh, that is nonsense - you are always talking nonsense.” “It’s much better to talk nonsense than to listen to it, my dear fellow.”
I feel like this is such a good quote to kind of sum up this play. It's nonsense and I have enjoyed it so much. I think all the fun little 4th wall breaks were my favorite bits. (My second favorite bit is ncuti gatwa’s sheer white dress shirt. My third favorite thing is how delightfully queer this play is. My fourth favorite thing is the costuming.)
I know today everyone is talking about Macbeth, but if you are in or around London do yourself a favour and go and see The Importance Of Being Earnest at the National Theatre. It's absolutely, gloriously, unashamedly phenomenal.

I actually love Max Websters Macbeth. So much. It defied everything I thought would be sensible to do in a Shakespeare production. My first impression of the stark minimalism (greyscale + simple clothes, absolutely no set design, ridiculously tiny stage, no voice projection) was that it made it look cheap, but having watched it now, I've realised how intentionally brutal it looks. I couldn't make a profound argument on how it uplifts the show, but I can tell you - it definitely does! It makes the actors, lighting and sound system stand out in a way that they've utilised so well!
I also think the minimalism helps the audience relate to these medieval Scottish characters, despite being a modern (and largely non-Scottish) audience. But they tried as hard as they could to have elements such as the music and actors be as authentic to 10th century Scotland as they could. And yet they managed to make it work because they gave it culture and authenticity, whilst still keeping the relevance to the modern audience.
I absolutely NEED this play to have a home release! It's an absolute work of art!!!
