I know I'm not the only one who loves Flynn/Eugene's redemption arc in Tangled. How he goes from shameless hedonism and greed to genuine compassion and selflessness, to the point where even as he's being led to his death, all that's on his mind is Rapunzel and how much danger she's in under Gothel's iron grip.
But it wasn't until my most recent rewatch that I realised Maximus has an arc that parallels Eugene's!
Right when Eugene is completing his transformation from swashbuckling outlaw to gallant hero, Maximus goes from being a rigid stick-in-the-mud Javert to chaotic good vigilante, busting a notorious career criminal out of prison on their execution day.
This goddamn horse has no lines of dialogue at all, and somehow they didn't just give him an arc, they gave him an arc in the opposite direction of the deuteragonist's arc and aligned both arcs to pay off in the same scene, and all of that makes me so happy 😂 I can't believe I never noticed the synchronicity before and I love this movie so much more now because of it ❤️
