Urban Site-Specificity

Zaha Hadid's Maxxi Museum in Rome represents an ideal example of urban site specificity. Hadid won the competition of 273 entrants by managing to embed her design within the urban fabric of the surrounding site. On the urban level, the multiple interconnected strands that wrap around the old military barracks, starting from an included head building, smoothly take up the main directions of the urban grid around the L-shaped site. The MAXXI design addresses the question of its urban context by maintaining an indexicality to the former army barracks. In this way, the Centre is more like an "urban graft", a second skin to the site.
