Ohhhh…gorgeous lesbian couple in my vampire show….ohhhh
like i just really love all the subtle ways that bigotry is invoked and influencing the way the characters interact with the world
lavonte doing so much of the fucking heavy lifting, only for the camarilla to defer to hj for explanation and give all the credit to madelaine for the work. only for madelaine to say that the system works when youre a part of the system to him when theyre alone. lavonte being a character that will read what kind of person someone is and say the thing they want to hear to get what he wants, even if it doesnt align with his wants and beliefs, sanding himself down to be easier to consume
madelaine being called a little girl despite being 261 years old; being stuck forever as a younger woman because the person who called her a little girl made her a vampire at such a young age. being scared of violence for stepping out of line, even though she holds a lot of power and privilege in her own right. using misogyny to her advantage by fitting that small, helpless role
amelia being hesitant to run for politics because she doesnt fit the heteronormative mold, and that being reinforced by hj saying she needs to have long hair to be palatable. maya being weary of lavonte, knowing now that this is a vampire coterie and not another queer couple in town, not trusting him anymore
obviously the plot is pretty centered around classism so i wont get into that, but like, theres a lot going on here and a lot of it isnt said out loud, its stuff that you can only get really by establishing the story takes place in our world and thus has all the prejudices that comes with that
people hating on maya, because she doesn't immediately trust the millionaire vampires who've killed/been responsible for the death of several people within the town??? what are we even doing here guys? did we forget that the coterie were initially sent to purpee as a punishment, and were tasked with taking over the town? how 2 of the members were exploring options outside of purpee, while claiming that they wanted to make purpee the new rome?
of-fucking-course she's going to be suspicious of them! this is the town she loves, and she doesn't want to take down the old guard, just to replace them with a new batch of rich vampires. she cares so much for the people of purpee, and building community, and she's absolutely in the right for questioning the motives of these new people, who are buying up equity in a lot of the towns amenities. and asking hj to invest his money into the credit union-you guys understand that she doesn't get that money right? she's asking them to actually put down roots in purpee, and to show her they're here to stay, in exchange for her help and cooperation.
and to the people calling her certain names, please check your language when talking about this brown lesbian, because some of y'all are falling ass backwards into some pretty gross bigotry.
I really like how wild the coterie looks to Maya, Amelia, and Cody.
Cody mentions to Maya that there are vampires in town Maya goes "yeah, I think they were dating." and Cody who ran into Mitch and Madelaine says "Really?" pauses and goes "I guess."
Amelia learns they live in her house after Maya comes home with part of her old wall. They meet after episode 9 and talk about how the hunter in town and Barnaby Whittaker who they thought was kind of immortal at the moment have both been taken care of and also Bigfoot is back. They've been in this town for their life and everything's shaping up so fast. There are now nine busses parked outside the co-op.
maya being WAY less chummy with HJ and LaVonte since the vampire reveal is first of all, hilarious, cause girl same. Strange rich interracial gay couple vs weird vampire millionaires who purchased your wife’s stolen house is an obvious choice.
But also ow. Maya potentially finding community with these other weirdo queers in a small town, only to discover that she read the situation wrong, and any kinship she sensed in them was actually a front, disguising their literal bloodsucking ways
i don’t know that brennan every specified maya or amelia’s age but i take them both as gen z especially because of maya’s pessimism when it comes to the coterie. even though i have the perspectives of the pcs, i get where she’s coming from with her distrust. as someone who grew up in an age of cancel culture and finding new definitions of accountability, i completely understand her taking a look at their chaos and the way they throw money around and feeling the urge to test them. obviously she was getting in her own way but that’s very realistic to activists of my generation. it’s also something i’m guilty of and am trying to learn from. to be honest maya’s better than me because if i saw the ai messages i would have blocked hj and cursed him.
maya jayashtri is one of the npcs of all time. she is a real human being to me and i love her so bad
Like, there's something to the self-fulfilling prophecy nature of Maya's distrust that I really dig. Because she didn't trust LaVonte, she tried to arrange a meeting without him, which set off HJ not trusting her, which lead to the whole thing spiraling into a misunderstanding where both sides were ready to give up on the whole thing until LaVonte himself talked to her.
It's like Maya's guarded nature is a mirror to LaVonte's and it's only by them both being vulnerable that they could hash things out and cooperate. And I just really love that.
Maybe a hot take ig but all the people who are hating on Maya for not trusting the coterie have to be lacking media literacy or flagrantly misogynist. She's a queer woman of color who's hometown is being dismantled and sucked dry of all its funding by rich white people and then fucking CAPATLIST VAMPIRES show up and destabilize the power structure of the entire town. She knows the coterie could kill her or anyone she loves if they wanted to, so of course she's combative with them, of course she doesn't trust them at all.
