Colombia's capital elects first female mayor

Claudia López hailed the "day of the woman" to supporters as she won the key political posting.

Colombia held elections on Monday. Perhaps the most-watched race was that for Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia’s capital. “Mayor of Bogotá is widely considered the second-most important political post in Colombia after the presidency.”

Former journalist Claudia López has become the very first female mayor of Bogotá. López is also Bogotá’s very first openly gay mayor. She is a center-left candidate known for her outspoken criticism of right-wing politicians. Congratulations, Mayor López!
