Mayor Ed Murray and City of Seattle Honor Seattle Urban Academy for 25 Years of Success
This is a milestone year for Seattle Urban Academy. We've now been serving the youth of Seattle for 25 years—and Mayor Ed Murray and the Seattle City Council are joining with us to celebrate!
In honor of SUA's 25th anniversary, the City of Seattle released an official proclamation recognizing the impact SUA has made since we first opened our doors as Seattle Street School in 1989.
The full text of the proclamation appears below:
A PROCLAMATION BY THE CITY COUNCIL AND MAYOR OF SEATTLE, CELEBRATING SEATTLE URBAN ACADEMY'S 25TH ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, Seattle Urban Academy began its existence in 1989 as Seattle Street School in order to provide educational support for homeless youth; and
WHEREAS, the school became part of Seattle-based CRISTA Ministries and changed its name in 1993, becoming a state-accredited degree-completion high school for youth at risk; and
WHEREAS, from its founding until today, Seattle Urban Academy has served the educational needs of high school students at risk, helping them graduate from high school and encouraging them for future success as productive young men and women who will give back to their communities; and
WHEREAS, an average of 95% of all Seattle Urban Academy seniors will graduate successfully (among the highest graduation rates in the nation among similar schools), and within one year of graduation more than 90% of graduates will be in higher education or the workforce; and
WHEREAS, Seattle Urban Academy has celebrated the graduation of more than 100 students who otherwise might have dropped out of high school, transforming their lives and saving society tens of millions of dollars in public assistance funding; and
WHEREAS, Seattle Urban Academy is an outstanding example of educational innovation, creating a unique and vibrant community made up of courageous students, committed staff, tireless volunteers and generous donors; and
WHEREAS, 2014 marks the 25th Anniversary Year of the founding of Seattle Urban Academy,
NOW, THEREFORE, The Seattle City Council and the Mayor congratulate the students, staff and volunteers on the 25th Anniversary of Seattle Urban Academy and acknowledge their excellent work of helping transform youth at risk into young adults with hope and a bright future.
