Open invite. I have attempted to invite the commissioners, the mayor and three mayoral candidates as well as asked my supervisors to extend invitations to the people above to come to the shelter and visit the animals, kennels, me and/or other volunteers, the staff… unofficially, unannounced. Now I am publicly inviting all mayoral candidates, the current mayor, the current animal commissioners, future commissioners, city council members, or anyone else to visit the shelter. It’s a public shelter. You are allowed to visit during operating hours. Stop in. See the dogs. The cats. The bunnies. Pig. Duck. Turtles. Sometimes we have snakes, spiders, birds, chickens… See the facilities. Talk to volunteers. Talk to the staff. Don’t make it official. don’t make it awkward. Just visit unofficially. Can simple white paint present a solution to global warming fight?

The Rolling Stones might not approve, but for White Roof Project, a non-profit organization in New York City, painting rooftops white may offer a simple solution to several challenges of climate change. The white paint is special because of its solar reflective abilities-- instead of absorbing and retaining a high proportion of heat, the coating of paint can change the quality of black tar rooftops to cool buildings, thus cooling the city’s climate--and sparing the consumer’s utilities bill.

A black tar roof means many things. In a city, most of the rooftops are made of black tar, which can increase the average temperature of a summer day by 15 degrees Fahrenheit. On a 90 degree day, a tar rooftop can easily reach 180 degrees Fahrenheit-- and that heat affects the inside temperature of the building to be 115 degrees. On the same day, a tar roof with white paint will only reach about 100 degrees Fahrenheit, therefore lowering the temperature on the inside of the building to 80 degrees. This not only saves up to 40% of an electricity bills cost, it reduces smog, and reflects sunlight back into the atmosphere for a cooler climate. White Roof Project organizes block-by-block to green the skylines of city neighborhoods. This grassroots solution should serve as a national model for environmental justice. Los Angeles would benefit from such a program for a cooler, brighter future. Internship program reaches new heights

With over 100 interns, our grassroots campaign is growing by the day. Alfredo, a basketball point guard and recent community college graduate, stands shoulders above the rest of #TeamPleitez at 6'3".

Alfredo is also one of our strongest canvassers. About voter contact, he says, "I was happy to see how many people are giving Emanuel their votes; it's exciting to meet people who are supporters who believe we can all make a change together."

As a student, Alfredo found the internship experience to be an excellent learning opportunity: "I like the communication skills I learned canvassing and phone banking. I also learned about database management, navigating around a large city different than San Fransisco, and adapting to a new environment."

"It also provided me with the opportunity to meet unique and smart individuals who were welcoming from the first day."

Although he studied sociology and rhetoric at Contra Costa Community College, he feels like "even though sociology gave me a foundation to understand why people and society are the way they are, this experience taught me that you have to affect policy to make an impact in a community."

Community Resource Roundup: Los Angeles Community Garden Council

Emanuel understands LA’s resources are limited, which is why we’re identifying organizations that work at a local level to improve their respective communities. Below is a look at an organization with a great history.

The Los Angeles Community Garden Council is a group of community gardeners who work together toward the mission of connecting people through the establishment and maintenance of community gardens. There are currently 70 gardens serving 3,900 families. The LACGC helps interested community members to establish gardens in coordination with other non-profit and community organizations in their neighborhood.

Community gardens are maintained and overseen by members, and membership is open to all community applicants. Space for these gardens is either LACGC-owned or acquired through short-term leases of public or private land. Maintenance of vacant lots on both public and private property is costly and leasing the space for community gardens is a cheap way to maintain the land. The LACGC notes that community gardens bring benefits to communities such as cooperation between members, self-reliance, poverty reduction, and improving the LA River and Ballona Creek watersheds.  The LACGC addresses the problem of child obesity in Los Angeles through its Little Green Fingers program, which creates community gardens specifically for low-income families in order to provide fresh produce, to teach nutrition education, and to contribute to healthier lifestyles. The program's initial costs are funded by a grant from First 5 LA, but seeks sponsorship and contributions for its continuation and expansion.
