Commission: Mazarun for Rilwen Shadowflame -- RivkaZ 2013
Mazarun, as drawn by the fabulous the-iron-crown.
Seeking in the Riftwood
A forest made a good place for an exchange of goods; for starters, it was out of the way of casual wanderers, and had the secondary advantage of concealing one from most eyes. The transaction taking place on the edges of the Riftwood was not, strictly speaking, legal around here, but there were always those who would not let that stop them.
Money changed hands, and the humans moved out with their new selection of goods. The drow, meanwhile, carried on shifting their prizes out of the forest by a different route.
Mazarun was feeling distinctly pleased with himself; the trade had gone particularly well this time.
Unfortunately, this might have meant that the bad luck had saved itself up for now. The lookout whistled sharply.
"Shevarashi, no doubt," Mazarun hissed, and his company leapt into action, splitting up to make it harder to track them. Disguises fell into place, and the goods were moved out by those of the company who knew best how to move without trace.
Mazarun headed deeper into the forest with his closest companion, Rantel Gode'zynge, seeking a place mentioned to him by a half-drow druid who lived around here. She'd said the Shevarashi did not go there, and so it seemed as good a place as any to hide from them.
Rantel, for his part, toiled doggedly beside him through the forest as they neared their destination. His thoughtful gaze, a slightly darker red than Mazarun's own, searched constantly for any signs of pusuers.

Watcher Rantel Rantel has grown accustomed, more or less, to having his hearing back. He no longer needs to watch a speaker, to read their words from the movements of their mouth. He watches Mazarun anyway. He watches Mazarun's lips shape each word. He watches Mazarun's hands, slender and graceful, as they add qualifying gestures to clarify whatever he's saying. They got into the habit of signing their conversations and they've never entirely fallen out of it; even a spoken exchange is enhanced by signs that modify the meanings of what is said. Rantel prefers it that way; so many of the subtleties of signed speech are conveyed in the face

[A short story about Mazarun and Rantel.]
by ~RilwenShadowflame
Faerun, Toril The night was still. There was no omen or warning in this night, nothing that might hint at the coming threat. The drow had come to the surface. At the edge of the forest, the raiding party had gathered, waiting for the return of their scout, sent ahead to check the area. Some of the raiders prodded the trunks of the trees in wariness or disgust. Some twitched at every little sound; the rustle of leaves in the breeze, the flight of a night-bird overhead, all seemed strange and threatening. Some, on the other hand, were staring up at the sky, looking at the stars. They'd been taught that the distant pinpricks of light served
