Future of Work
Posted this as a comment over on LinkedIn, wanted to archive it here. Things tend to get lost over there.
My take on "the future of work" is that it unnecessarily tied to "commercial real estate" and outmoded management and organizational strategies. I'll tackle the latter first. Most modern management models are still based on MBWA. You can couch it in any sort of personal relationship, emotional IQ, language you want, but they're all based on proximity to those being managed. And that brings us to commercial real estate.
Because management believes that employees need to be near each other, they've spent an obscene amount of money creating modern work spaces for them. Often on long-term leases. Now that it's clear that productivity doesn't suffer when workers aren't proximate, it calls into question those decisions and, by extension, their management model as a whole. Can't have that. So we're going to see a lot of "we believe being together is better" messages until that generation of management retires.
