Tomorrow Rose would be introduced back into court. She’d have to face all the people that this scandal had hurt.
So far nobody knew that she was still in the country other than Maxwell and Bertrand, but that didn't stop the articles about the ‘American whore who cheated on the prince’ from being published. It really all was too good to be true.
The last few months had been phenomenal. Yes, they’d had their fair share of troublesome moments, like Olivia snogging Liam just to spite her, but It had been like something out of a fairytale. The kings and queens, the prince, the dresses and the hats, the balls (too many in her opinion), the romance and all the friends she had made, it had been amazing, an adventure she never dreamed she’d ever go on.
She had escaped from her 9 to 5 job in a bar in New York and came to the most apple obsessed but beautiful country she had ever seen. She had the chance to get to know some of the most empathetic and just over all amazing people she had ever met.
She had impressed the queen, she had won over the press, which had gone to hell now, but in the few months of being in Cordonia she had not only learned so much about so many things, but she had learned about herself too, about what she was capable of.
A part of her thought that what happened at the Coronation was for the better, she didn't love Liam, she tried too, but forcing herself to love somebody she didn't was only going to end in disaster in the long run.
The last few days nearing to her reintroduction the brothers had noticed a change in her and not a good one. She didn't come out of her room often, she didn't talk to either of them, she just wasn't herself.
Maxwell the day prior had gone looking for her in her bedroom, she wasn't there but her laptop was left open. She had been reading those unimaginably horrible articles about the supposed ‘scandal’. It broke his heart that she had read those words written about her, but he understood then why she was acting the way she was. It made the young lord angry that they would write such things about somebody that was so innocent and kind and just as tremendous as Rose was. But even Maxwell Beaumont, the happiest person on the planet couldn't get her out of this funk, but he knew who could. Who would do anything to make sure she was happy. Her soulmate. Drake Walker.
Today she still wasn't happy, she was upset and rightfully so, this was her name that was being dragged through the mud.
Last night was like every other, she’d finish getting overloaded with instructions from Bertrand, she’d then head to her room and read some more that resulted in crying herself to sleep, like every night for the last few weeks without fail. By this point it had just become part of her nightly routine, that all in all, was becoming an unhealthy one.
That morning she awoke to the sound of the most annoying alarm clock on the planet. She begrudgingly sat up and leaned over to switch it off, then after some debate whether she should even get up or just sleep the day away, Rose hauled herself out of the bed.
Rose showered, brushed her teeth and hair, dressed then headed downstairs. She wasn't all that hungry, the anxiety of what was coming later that day made her appetite all but vanish.
As she neared the kitchen she heard three voices, instead of just hearing Bertrand daily berate his younger brother. As she got closer she recognised all the voices, it was Maxwell, Bertrand like expected but the third was...Drake? Why was Drake here? she asked herself but couldn't come up with an adequate reason to why.
Rose walked into the kitchen and poured herself a cup of coffee. The men's conversation just turned to awkward silence as they watched her.
“Morning Maxwell, Bertrand,” Rose muttered, sipping at her coffee.
If Drake was going to ignore her for weeks then she would do the same. He hadn't even tried to so much as text her, a job that took seconds.
“I trust you’re all packed. We’re leaving for Fydelia in an hour.”
“Yes, Bertrand, I’m all ready,” Rose said as she finished off the rest of the piping liquid. After she was done she swilled it out and placed it upside down on the draining board.
“Don't you want any breakfast?” Maxwell asked.
“I'm fine, Max, I'll have something when we get to Fydelia. Why’s he here?” Rose asked, nodding toward Drake.
“I could ask you the same question, Cooper.”
“Yeah, well, I didn't leave you’d know that if you’d actually bothered to pick up your phone,” she snapped.
“We’ll just leave you guys to it,” Maxwell said as they both left. Rose paced in front of the table for a minute or so then turned back to him.
“Are you okay?” Drake asked.
“No, I don't know.”
“Maxwell and Bertrand are pretty worried about you.”
“Did Maxwell call you?”
“Yeah,” Drake nodded, “are you gonna sit down or...?”
“No, let’s go for a walk.”
They passed Bertrand on the way out and he reminded them not to go far because they needed to keep to their strict schedule. Rose stuck her hands into her pockets as they walked in a comforting silence.
“Does he hate me?” Rose eventually asked.
“Liam?” Drake asked, turning his head to look at her and she nodded, “No, he doesn't. He knows the photos were fake.”
“Then why have I had just had radio silence from both of you? I get why I haven't heard from Hana, she’s in Shanghai, but you and Liam...?”
“Liam will explain all of it when you see him later. Believe it or not we did it to protect you. I did it to protect you.”
“From..?”
“Like I said, Liam will explain all of it .” They stopped and turned to each other.
“I thought you hated me,” Rose said, her voice cracking. “I know you walked in the night but then I didn't hear from you, I thought that...”
Drake cut her off with a kiss, a kiss she didn't expect, but loved every second of. Eventually he pulled away. “I don't hate you. I never could. Rose...” Oh this was serious, she thought, the first name was only ever used when it was important, “You need to stop reading those things about you. We both know there’s no truth in them so stop.”
“How did...Maxwell?”
“You left your laptop on.” Maxwell may have been goofy most of the time, but he wasn't stupid, he could see the love that was starting to blossom between his friends, Bertrand on the other hand was slightly oblivious, but not Maxwell. He was happy for them even if Drake wasn't the person she was meant to fall for.
“Of course I did,” Rose sighed, she glanced at her watch. “Oh shoot, it’s nearly ten. We better get back.”
They took off back towards the manor, holding hands. “So why did Maxwell call you?”
“He said something about a soulmate.”
