saturday, fortnight, september!!!!

saturday: what gets you excited whilst writing?

if i feel like i’ve hit a good bit of dialogue, or if i’m approaching an event that is one of those key scenes that i’ve been waiting to write since the beginning of the fic. also, if i come up with something that ties a small bit of information that appears unmeaningful in the beginning, to something bigger. it’s those moments where i go “wait... it fits-- it FITS-- IT’S CANON!!! HOLY SHIT!!!” 😂😂 also, finishing a chapter makes me excited, cos then i’m done with the fucking thing, hahah

fortnight: what wip do you plan on posting next, if at all?

oof *sweats* well i’m not going to be abandoning any of my wips, but....most likely the next Ten Minutes chapter, since i’m not really advancing with any of my other fics at the moment. sob. so wish it was the hot spot, i wanna get that fic OUT

yeah, i know. it was very common here too when i was growing up in the 90s. we should definitely take cultural context into account when we talk about the abuse the boys went through, both physical and emotional. i don’t think it means “jim sucks” cuz that’s way too simplistic (though i understand anon was probably trying to get across a complex concept in a small amount of words bc tumblr asks are terrible). doesn’t make it okay, though.

i’ve said it so many times before and i’ll say it again but ppl need to remember how homophobic (northern) england was and is, and how ideas of masculinity (and femininity) are so ingrained in a LOT of society here. ppl discussing john’s sexuality need to take that into consideration...

So I think the answer to my original question of “How do we feel about that” is “REALLY complicated.” I feel the same way as you, Second Anon, it’s really hard to form a solid opinion on something like this when it has to do with the inner workings of a marriage, which is something we will never understand because it was so personal to them. There are things we will just never know, like how much of being in Wings was her choice and how much of it wasn’t. You never want to paint someone as a simple victim with no choice in the matter when they clearly were not, but you also want to recognize that pressuring someone to do something they aren’t comfortable with, in front of thousands of people a night, fuckin sucks. It’s also important to recognize that the situation changed over time as she got better and more comfortable with it, as a couple of you pointed out.

I think it’s okay to not really know how to feel about it. As long as we’re not painting their marriage as either some blissful thirty-year heaven (or a locked-down thirty-year hell for that matter) and we talk about these issues, we’re on the right track.
