Ambiguously Gay Hockey Duos of Yore and Today
Alright guys last post I owe you from my time ruminating on a beach. The below is a very brief overview of the dynamic/ambiguously gay hockey duos that the sport has produced. Note I am focusing on the ones that were shipped/had any type of rumor about them and not just on ice duos. Gretzky/Kurri, Gretzky/Messier, Lemieux/Jagr just to name a few were fucking amazing together and broke all sorts of records. But real hockey shop talk I reserve for my main accounts. This is my gay account. I focus on the gay here.
I am also giving them a 1 to 10 rating on the gay Richter scale (using my own gaydar, please jump in if you see any of these duos differently). For those outside of Cali, the Richter Scale measures earthquakes.
SidGeno - the lore on these two is deep and lengthy. Lots of parallels to our main duo. Were drafted a year apart. Have never separated like many of the below. In RPF (which I am super new to) they are called the one true pairing. Geno did eventually get married but the marriage has always been super rocky. Many divorce rumors circling them currently. Sid has been with Kathy Leutner for a long time - think about 15 years but never married/no kids. Tons of stuff on these two so won't go into it much. 7/10
Carter/Richards - My very first ship when I was of age to understand the fuckery these two got up to. Another Fliers duo. What the fuck do they put in the water in Philly. These two DID IT ALL together. They did heavy drugs, drank, picked up women (yes 3somes), snorted lines off a strippers. They are so dear to my heart. Their partying was so bad that the Fliers had the whole team sign a "no partying" contract in the run up to the playoffs. They both refused to sign. Were both traded away (kings and CBJ) even though they JUST WON THE CUP. Thats how bad they were. But get this. They both end up in fucking LA together. With our lovable TOFF. They buy a house together. Buy a dog together. And still get up to their same fuckboy ways together. Both now retired. The kicker? NEITHER OF THEM WILL SPEAK ABOUT THE OTHER. Like a real ass divorce happened here. 9/10
Trevor Zegras/Jamie Drysdale from the Ducks. Lots of loving looks between these two. They often described themselves as brothers. They one time said they peed together. Like they do everything together including going to the bathroom. Later they say its a joke from a movie. Who the F knows with these two. They were traded away for a single season but reunited later at the Fliers where they both play now. Toff/Pearson - Bet most of you didnt know our own Toff had his own baby ship when he was new to the NHL! Okay I saw this one in live time as I was living in LA at the time. My honest take? They fucked around in their youth but were never gay. Had a special friendship and something more but again never got a full gay vibe here. Lived together, lots of loving stares. Both around for the Kings Cup period. Both now married (obvs). Id say a 7/10 in their hayday but a 4/10 looking back on it now.
Kane/Toews - honestly one of the best on ice duos of all time. This is the record Willmack is currently trying to beat. Put up insane points together. I know ppl ship them a ton but I never ever got a vibe from them. Close friends and amazing on ice chemistry but that seemed like it all to me. The RPF community can jump in here b/c as I have said before I come from a hockey background not RPF. RPF is soooo new to me so if you have anything to add here let me know. Feel like Benn/Seguin fit in this same category. 3/10
The McDrai Polycuyle (@ipleasantgiver thank you for most of the info below) - long and the short of it is McDrai are BFFs but their wives...are interesting together. They were friends first before they met the boys. Girls have always been reported to be "very close". There was a lavender themed rehearsal dinner and a joint honeymoon. Now they built houses next door to one another. 4/10 for the boys 9/10 for the wives.
1634 - I may do a separate post on these two. I will never ever be over the divorce. They are so dang similar to Willmack. 1st and 4th oas. Always played together SO in sync (C and winger). Led the Leafs to many playoff runs. Lots of goss on these two including lots of gay rumors on Matthews. Marner got married and then left the Leafs as a free agent end of last season. Went to evil Vegas. Marner can suck it. 8/10
HM to Swayman/Ullmark who are my best goalie duo of all time. SOO cute together. But not in a gay way. In a brother way for sure.
HM to a Canes duo who I know when through a whole bunch of shipping about 5 years ago? But I have never followed the Canes so know very little about this. Please chime in if you know!
