What Zines to Apply To?

Recently, there’s been a ton of scandal surrounding the McHanzo Zine, Bullseye. But it isn’t an isolated case; zines scam people all the time, though it’s almost always restricted to the smaller ones. 

As someone who’s participated in well over a dozen zines, many of the smaller projects simply never contacted me again, had absolutely awful management, or worse, never sent out ordered items. Zines are based on trust, and it’s absolutely awful that some chose to betray it! So how do you know which ones you should apply or order from? Look for these:

Make sure that the organizer is not anonymous, and has their social media and handles blatantly available. If they are anonymous, there’s nearly a certain chance they’ll drop it mid-way. If it’s clear, see what they’re like as a person, or if they have a large following.

Make sure that the moderator has organized zines before. People who haven’t organized zines before don’t have experience and often don’t realize how difficult it can be. And if they do run other projects, are those actually complete?

Make sure there’s more than one mod. Oftentimes, IRL can cause problems; if there’s no one else to pick up the slack, that’s also a huge problem. (On the other hand, too many mods can make the zine disorganized!)

Communication: Has the moderator made relevant info available? And if you’ve been accepted, do they regularly email or update you?

Graphics: Do the graphics seem well-made and aesthetically pleasing? Product placement makes a huge difference when it comes to preorders, and can absolutely mean the difference between not breaking even and success. If their stuff looks like crap, so will the zine.

Professionalism: If they are not well-organized or professional, that’s a sign that they probably won’t be able to handle everything a zine throws at them, and may discriminate against certain ships or people. 

Where do profits go? This is pretty important, and needs to established early on. Will it be split among artists, or go to charity? 

Is there support? Does the application post have at the very least 300 notes? If not, what about other posts? If they don’t have a lot of notes or followers, that means that not many people will apply, and not many people will buy. That also means a much bigger risks of the project failing, and much less people holding them accountable if they do.

For people interested in making a zine but have no experience doing so, I strongly suggest moderating one before organizing your own!

WELL I had hoped the circumstances of the unveiling would be a bit better than they are, but here is my piece for the (apparently ill-fated) mchanzo zine! I worked very hard on my solo McCree piece, and I hope you can still enjoy it despite everything going on with the zine right now! ALSO I’ll be getting prints made for the next con I attend, so be on the lookout for those! I may sell some online first. 🌵🤠💖

Here’s the illustration I drew for the Bullseye Mchanzine called ‘Back then’. . An illustration between the young brothers of the Shimada Clan, after their morning practice. . [LONG POST AHEAD - Take slow steps] . Couldn’t wait like the others, who put their heart and soul into this zine ever since the beginning of May or June. . Yes, I am still filled between anger and complete confusion or disappointment, since this is my first zine I have ever got accepted into. . Despite all this, I send my love to every single contributor whoever worked along and hope that light at the end of the tunnel will shine towards us. Plus, I have learnt very valuable lessons throughout this process and met amazing new people… . Especially enjoyed till exhaustion with this amazing concept and this really proved that I can still come up with such scenarios like this. . Overall, I won’t stop shipping Mchanzo or applying for zines in the future JUST because of this. Since I do this for the people who are in need in the first place - for charity. . Seriously Kudos to you for understanding and reading this, I just wanted to update you with the mchanzine thing I was part of. Love you all and have a wonderful day~ 💕 . . . re: That Zine

Yes, the Bullseye Zine again. We’re still trying to deal with it. 

I haven’t been talking much about it publicly, because it’s stressful and tiresome and frankly all of us are done with it, but it has been discussed with those of us still present in the Discord. A lot of the chatter and drama has kinda died down outside of that, but the whole thing is still not done. 

@mchanzonereceipts is the public record of evidence, subsequent email conversations with Lynn, etc. You can go through that for every detail, but in essence, this is what I know and understand:

We still have not been shown proof that the money has been returned and will go where it needs to. We have not even been told how much money we made in the first place, or how many zines were sold. Every time we ask, we are ignored, or excuses are made.

Shipping is apparently happening to buyers, albeit very slowly.

Shipping, so far, has NOT happened for any contributors that we know of. None of us have gotten the hard-copy zines we asked for as payment for the work we did. 

The zine is poorly made. Even in the PDF version, this is clear. The zine was never passed to our editor in the first place before it went to printing, and the actual print copies appear to be a very low quality, particularly for what was charged.

Lynn is still almost impossible to get hold of outside of email. The main McHanzo blog has not been updated in weeks, except for various “explanations” that are posted and then later deleted. 

We’re waiting on one last-ditch email attempt to fix this (with simply PayPal statements) before the lawsuit is officially filed.

I’m very angry. 

We could have dealt with this weeks ago if we’d gotten some simple PayPal statements. Many of us wanted to believe she was innocent.  It is long past the point of acceptable–we could easily have been given either the statements or access to the account by now.

It’s looking like we the contributors will not get paid in the things we requested. While many of us received the PDF versions, this was not necessarily what we all agreed upon–and even then, several people did not get those. 

I’m tired of seeing people accuse us of being too stupid to know what was happening, or saying we let this happen. We started this project with two organizers (Lynn and Ghost), a professional editor, and a panel of judges. We had no reason to think anything was going wrong for the first ¾ of the entire project. Anything that did come up was pretty easily chalked up to a road bump in the progress of a new zine. And several people did start asking for details not long before the entire thing went to hell–and were ignored then. 

I’m angry that all of us were fucked over. I’m angry that we put our hearts and souls into our works, only to have the profits either mismanaged or outright stolen. I’m angry that the charities for queer kids may not get the money we raised. I’m angry that Lynn repeatedly pulls the mental health card for sympathy, conveniently ignoring that many of us in the zine ALSO have mental health issues that have been horribly exacerbated by this. I’m angry that dozens of us have been implicated in something we had little to no control over. I'm angry that we haven't even gotten an apology, or a true acknowledgement of wrongdoing that was not immediately deleted.  

I am sorry that this has gotten to this point. I’m sorry for everyone who supported us and has received garbage, or nothing at all. And I am sorry that Lynn has suffered so much abuse, truly–the repercussions should not have culminated in the kind of abuse I imagine has come her way. 

But I am so fucking angry, and I am tired.

Hello!

I know this blog is no longer in use and I’ve long since moved to my other art blog, but due to recent events and that I still have a larger following here than my other blog, I thought I should say something. A lot of you may be aware of the situation about the charity proceeds for the Bullseye McHanzine being misused for Lynn’s personal desires. 

For now, I’m not sure what to believe nor say, but I’m very upset at the idea that all the contributors’ efforts would go to vain like that. I only contributed a simple charm design myself, but it was my first zine I ever got a chance to participate in, especially for such a popular ship with a huge following.

I know it’s not a zine, or print, and I don’t know how many people would be interested, but I’m considering trying to find out a way to produce my own physical copies of the charm I designed, and donate whatever proceeds I receive to charity myself. I will admit-- I’m young and very inexperienced in these things, but thanks to my friends I’ve already started receiving help and tips on how to get started! Since it’s the end of the year, school is going to get busy for me as well as several other personal projects I’m trying to work on, but this is definitely something I want to put my attention to especially now, so I will try to keep updates here, or most definitely on my Twitter @ classydove_
