SnK Volume 27 Major Character Ranking Poll: Results (Part 1)

The results are in! I managed to collect more than 300 responses this time, so thanks so much to everyone who participated in the poll!  I know this is quite a bit late, and I’m really sorry about that.  Better late than never, I suppose. 

**This post covers the overall results and the change in rankings since the last volume. Posts pertaining to site- and gender-specific results will go up separately.

Some things have changed in the four chapters since the last time I conducted this poll after the conclusion of Volume 26:

- As many predicted, Eren retook the #1 spot from Reiner. His rank improved by an average of 1.14 for each respondent, which is actually pretty significant (only four others saw an average rank increase of more than 1). 53% of people ranked him in their top 3, versus the 41% who did so last time.

- Eren, Historia, and Zeke all saw huge gains in the percentage of people including them in their top 3 (>10%).

- Reiner’s average rank remains almost completely unchanged, which was also expected. The change in rank is more the result of Eren’s increase in popularity rather than a decrease in Reiner’s own popularity.

- Erwin’s average rank worsened only slightly, but he lost 3 ranks overall. He no longer has a spot on the top 5.  Rip =[

- Historia saw the biggest improvement in rank since the conclusion of Volume 26. She jumped from 11th to 5th, which is the biggest jump any character has ever had between two consecutive polls. 21% of respondents put her in their top 3 this time, compared to only 8% last time.  Some anime influence seems possible.  

- Zeke is by far the most controversial character in this poll, with 23% of respondents putting him in their top 3 and 25% putting him in their bottom 3. Zeke comes in 4th in terms of the percentage of respondents who put him in their top 3, and also in 4th for the percentage who put him in their bottom 3.  (I could probably write a whole post solely about Zeke’s results, but probably won’t)

- Mikasa was the second most controversial, ending up in the top 3 15% of the time and the bottom 3 14% of the time.  

- Gabi was ranked lowest more than any other character (23.1%).  Next was Zeke (13.6%), followed by Porco (12.8%) and then Ymir (12.5%)

- Characters ranked lowest less than 1% of the time: Reiner (0.6%), Jean (0.6%), and Pieck (0.9%)

I have not yet decided if I want to do a mid-volume poll this time around. The secondary character poll is probably not something that needs to be done every volume, and I don’t have an overabundance of compelling ideas at the moment. I’d love to hear ideas if you have any.

I still plan on doing another installment of this poll after 114 drops.

Notes

- The purpose of my Major Character Ranking Poll is to follow the popularity of all major characters over time, not to rank only the characters that appeared in a certain volume. Isayama might be done drawing Erwin, but I’m not done including him in my polls, dammit! I just wanted to address that because I got many comments asking why so many dead characters are included. - Kenny Ackerman was included in previous polls, but not this one. Due to his removal, rankings may appear artificially high, but the effect should be fairly insignificant.  - I’m super glad I don’t need to shame anyone this time for voting 50+ times on this poll. >_>

Results By Respondent Gender

- Perhaps the most obvious difference between the two groups is that  the number one and two spots a swapped. Reiner ranks first (barely) for those who identify as female while Eren ranks first for those who identify as male. 

- Females seem to generally include a wider array of characters in their top rankings, while males seem to be slightly more polarized - especially with regard to those Jaeger brothers. 

- Eren wound up in the top 3 for 69% of males. That is a LOT! For women, he did end up in the top 3 more than any other character, but only 38% of the time. Females were also almost 3 times more likely than males to include him in their bottom 3. 

- A similar thing happens when looking at the distribution of Zeke’s rankings by gender, but with a less intense skew. It looks like the Jaeger Faction appeals a bit more to males than to females (despite all of the abs).

- Historia is also notably more popular with those who identify as male. More than 25% of guys put her in their top 3, while females were less than half as likely. Women were also more than twice as likely to include her in their bottom 3 (although still incredibly unlikely).

- Females were far more likely to rank Hange and Levi in their top 4. These characters are unpopular with neither demographic, however

- Ymir is more popular with females as well, but for the opposite reason. Females tend to be far less likely to rank her in their bottom 2, but not significantly more likely to rank her higher.

- Gabi, Falco, Armin, and Mikasa are each ranked almost identically regardless of respondent gender. 

- Similarly, Levi’s average ranking is the same regardless of gender. His case is different though, because females are twice as likely to include him in their top 3, but also almost twice as likely to include him in their bottom 3.

Results By Preferred Site (aka Reddit vs everyone else)

- When we looked at results by gender, we saw that males tend to be more polarized in their rankings, with less variety in their top 3 as opposed to females. We see something similar happen when we look at the results by site. Reddit is predominantly male (76% of my reddit respondents identified as such), so this makes sense, however I got curious to see if the same pattern holds true for females of Reddit.... 

- Women of Reddit DO seem to be more polarized in favor of Eren, but not necessarily for Zeke.   (This reminds me a bit of my recent Secondary Character Poll, in which Zackly and Floch performed significantly better amongst Redditors and males, but also performed better amongst Redditor females than non-Redditor females. Neat stuff)

- and oh wow... totally by accident I seem to have found one of Reiner’s more unpopular demographics. Interesting....

- Eren is actually more likely to wind up in the bottom 3 for non-Redditors than he is for females in general. 

- Bert and Ymir are both far more popular with non-Redditors than Redditors.
