S'occuper d'animaux est également un moyen de permettre la réhabilitation de certains détenus. Quelques centres pénitenciers l'ont bien compris comme le prouvent ces images. Un programme offre donc la possibilité à des prisonniers d’éduquer des chiens pendant leur détention. Ce programme confie à des prisonniers des chiens abandonnés. Une façon pour eux de se responsabiliser, de se charger de l’éducation d’un être vivant et de trouver en l’animal un compagnon idéal. Les résultats sont au rendez-vous. Le chien utilisé pour pallier au manque d’interaction sociale. Les USA permettent à ceux enfermés dans les prisons du pays de bénéficier d’un compagnon dans leur cellule.
Une nouveauté rendue possible par l’association Canine Cell Mates, qui joue le rôle de fournisseur de chiens abandonnés. Ces derniers ont ainsi la chance de se retrouver un maître pendant plusieurs semaines. Après un temps d’adaptation, marqué par la découverte mutuelle entre le maître et son canidé, le chien passe 24 heures sur 24 en compagnie de son nouveau propriétaire intérimaire.
Ce dernier reprend ainsi une certaine responsabilité, avec l’objectif de continuer l’éducation, ou la reprendre à zéro. Soins, organisation, attention à l’autre… les prisonniers n’ont plus une minute à eux, et doivent être à l’écoute de leur protégé.
