Thinking about Jim having suspicions that some of his crew might have something like a pinup calendar he did for Starfleet stashed away somewhere but actually Spock/Bones being so smitten that what’s actually secretly stashed away is a candid photo of Jim from some kind of publicity event where he’s genuinely having fun so his smile is big and bright and nice
Imagine if McCoy is an Empath, in the same way that Gem was. Most of the time, the injuries of the crewmen are easily dealt with in Sickbay, or their death in the field is instantaneous, so he rarely has a need to use his Empathy. But he will, and has, if he feels it to be necessary. He’s kept the entire crew of the Enterprise in the dark about his status as an Empath.
However, while on an away mission, Spock (or Kirk) is badly injured, and they’ve lost communication to the Enterprise. McCoy does what he has to, and now the secret’s out.
