it’s all harmless to the naked eye. no casual onlooker would ever think to notice the way her body stills as he leans in close. the shiver that shoots down her spine. the way her breath catches in her throat. of course not. they would even think it completely natural the way she forces herself to nod as if he’s actually murmuring to her anything of note. they would think nothing of the professional smile that she forces into her expression so expertly. “ that … will be fine. thank you. “ added for good measure.

@medellin : she gets a quick lingering of the lips from alejandro. to others, it appears as if he's only whispering in her ear, head tilted just so, but only upon closer inspection, a hand settling on her arm, does he dare press his lips on the shell of her ear.

it’s a scene pat is,   unfortunately,   used to.     benjamín putting his hands on her during one of his fits of rage is nothing new,   and holding her balance on top of five inch heels after being pushed by him was an impossible task.     but having alejandro step in to defend her?     that was a  first.     the mixture of emotions in her chest is way too confusing,   and it takes her a few seconds of complete silence to find her voice again.

THERE’S A QUESTION THAT OFTEN CROSSES HER MIND  since she began working at this business:   what would her father do?     he wouldn’t sell himself short,   that’s for sure,   specially among potential new business partners.     he didn’t become  the  javier carosella by letting himself be bossed around and accepting any mediocre offer thrown his way.     she gives the man in front of her a smile that’s more polite and professional than warm.

THE WORDS CATCH HER OFF GUARD,   and there’s a brief moment where her mind can’t help but wonder,   is this my future?     is this what will happen after i’m done?     pat pushes the thought out of her mind.     she has things to look up to afterwards,   she concludes.     a promising career.     maybe starting a family at some point.     she’ll finally be at peace,   so why  wouldn’t  things be that simple?

THERE’S A PRIDEFUL NATURE TO PILAR  that’s always struggled to accept concepts such as help,   or,   god forbid,   charity.     even in times of need,   she’s prone to suck it up and deal with whatever issue by herself.     perhaps this is what she likes the least about her new position in this business   ━━   understanding that she can’t do it all alone,   that she  needs  others whether she likes it or not.

❝    what is it that makes you see it as  help,   mr. gillick?    ❞      despite her annoyance,   it’s her long-acquired instinct to be a good hostess that has her calmly pouring two glasses of the expensive liquor at her corner table.     one is placed in front of alejandro on the table;   a silent offer.     the other stays in her ringed hand.

she’s  certain  she’s  imagined  it,  that  voice  by  the  doorway,  gone  but  not  faded  from  memory  in  the  weeks  passed  by.   she  hesitates  as  soon  as  her  gaze  locates  him  there,  as  though  she  expects  him  to  disappear.  he  doesn’t.  conflict,  anger,  concern,  shock    ⸺  they  all  dance  in  the  blue  of  her  eyes.  still,  she  doesn’t  move.  “  alejandro.  “

❝    YOU DIDN’T EVEN  KNOW  HIM.    ❞      her voice shakes towards the end,   yet she forces herself to calm down.     now is not the time for an outburst of  grief  that pat knows too well she’ll be powerless to stop once it begins.     there’s important business to be done.     she’s cried enough tears in the privacy of her own home to fall apart in front of a man who’s essentially a stranger;   much less one who,   at least on surface-level,   holds himself together as well as alejandro does.
