TJeff wasn't the only one that didn't agree with slavery. I believe it was TJeff that said "it's like holding a wolf by the ears" Even Marquis de Lafayette, a forgotten "founding father" (also my distant Uncle) Didn't agree with it. You can find an interesting article about it by googleing: Marquis de Lafayette's Plan for Slavery (click on the first result)
its so rad that lafayette is related to you, that guy is so cool. I went on L’Hermione this summer! I guess what I’m saying is I find it hard to believe that he (tjeff) was /truly/ against slavery. If he truly saw it as some type of immoral abomination I don’t understand why he didn’t take the first and most obvious step of liberating the slaves at Monticello.
People say it was messed up that Thomas Jefferson didn't free his slaves after his death. I think he didn't do it because his family would have lost valuable servants. As I'm to understand he treated his slaves more like servants then slaves. Would you agree or disagree with this?
its midnight and I’m exhausted rn but i’ll try to give a coherent answer anyway. if i get some stuff wrong please tell me. and @everyone analyze the info for yourself and dont just accept my opinion because im sure im leaving some stuff out. ok lets go.
Despite just reading that book I’m still very confused on what his views regarding slavery were. From his writings you’d assume he was quite against the institution. he called it a “moral depravity” and a “hideous blot” In 1778, he drafted a Virginia law that prohibited the importation of enslaved Africans, and In 1784, he proposed an ordinance that would ban slavery in the Northwest territories.
I’m like ok???? but you still literally owned people???? how can you be considered against slavery when you are literally part of the institution?
so yea tjeff didn’t free his slaves after his death like some other people did. for instance washington’s slaves were free’d by martha after he died. Jefferson made sure that the slaves would still be profitable to his family and monticello even after his death. he did free some of his slaves. I believe when he left france one of his slaves named Petit was left to go about her life as a free woman in france. There’s another guy (who’s name I’m drawing a blank on) who lived with tjeff in france, and tjeff gave him the option of either living free in france or coming back to the US, teaching another slave how to cook french food, and then living free in the US. He chose the latter and tjeff gave him money to travel from virginia to philidelphia (where he wanted to live)
People do tend to say he treated his slaves more like servants ? idk how i feel about that because, as i previously mentioned, HE OWNED OTHER HUMANS. however according to Natalie S Bober’s jefferson biography, everyone at monticello was like SUPER pumped when he and his family came back from france. but i dont know, i mean overall i didn’t like the way the biography treated his slavery views. like she was making him out to be some gr88 abolitionist but he wasn’t? if the issue was really important to him there were many other steps which he could’ve taken when he was president.
also everyones like 90% sure sally hemming’s kids were his. she was like 30 years younger than him. idk if that age gap was at all an issue back then but i find myself wondering about the ability of a slave to consent to sex. I haven’t has time to look into this further but it seems to me that there’s two options here. if sally was into it i would say they had a “””relationship””” as everyone seems to put it, but if she wasn’t, jefferson was sexually abusing her. he free’d her kids but thomas never free’d her. she did get to leave eventually because jefferson’s daughter free’d sally after jefferson died, but still.
tldr he took some antislavery actions but i personally believe he could’ve done more, and i dont understand how he can get credited as being against the institution when he actively supported it. i do see a lot of sources say that he treated them more like servants than slaves, but all that really says to me is like “it could’ve been worse”. i mean im glad they had comparatively good treatment but they still were being treated as property. at the end of the day he still owned 600 people in his lifetime, and he could’ve free’d them all but he didn’t and to me that sucks.
Hokey wouldn't be the same without the fighting.
OH MY GOD I KNOW RIGHT fighting is the best
ok but this game was awesome it was u of m vs. msu which is a HUGE rivalry in michigan and we (u of m) won 7-1 and there were a bunch of fights bc msu were being poor losers and one guy got tossed because he was a huge dickwad and kept punching our guy even after he was on the ground hurt
and one of our guys got a hat trick (which for those of you who don't know that's 3 goals by the same guy) IT WAS AN AMAZING GAME
