The thing I love about The Untamed/CQL is that it shows us that we are all that our circumstances make us. For example, Wei Wuxian, Jin Guangyao, and Xue Yang. All of them were orphans with a rough childhood. Wei Wuxian’s parents where a high cultivator and a servant; Jin Guangyao’s a prostitute and a prominent set leader, Xue Yang’s, were the only ones we don't know about.
The only reason why WWX grew up to be successful was that a Big Kind Sect Leader was in love with his mother. Jin Guangyao’s life went shit because he was bound to the promise he had to his mother and his need to be acknowledged. Xue Yang’s life, on the other hand, went shit because he was taken in by a Big Bad Sect Leader and thought to be evil, that added to his need to be not-hurt.
With all three, we have a moment where we can see who they could’ve been if everything went better: WWX in the Cloud Recesses, JGY in QingheNie, and XY in Yi City.
In the end, we are all what our circumstances make us. We are either the trusting Lan Xichen or the hostile Nie Mingjue; maybe we are the betrayed friend Nie Huaisang or the outside viewer Wei Wuxian. We all believe what we were taught to believe.
