***Sacred Corn*** We were gifted some very special grains for our gardens from some Water Protectors this winter. Only a small number were viable, but those that came up were like none I have ever seen. The 8 foot corn has tassels drooping down, dancing in the breeze and towering over all the other plants. As the sun beats down and other plants succumb to our drought, it thrives. It is huge, and strong, and at its base has finger-like rootlets grasping towards the Earth. The leaves are a dark bluish green and soft and smooth. Every time I look at them, I am reminded, water is life. I think of Standing Rock, and the struggles that Earth warrIors have as they continue to protect the land and the water. Thank you to everyone who fights to protect the Earth, no matter what the odds. Happy May Day weekend!!!Here is some Botany porn for your enjoyment. This series of outdoor skills classes at the Wildflower School focuses on flowers, celebrating the fertility Earth festival, Beltane. Can you see all the parts of this beautiful cactus flower? Is it complete? Perfect? Regular or irregular? Does it have a superior or inferior ovary? To be a safe and efficient wildcrafter you have to be able to identify plants. For those of us not growing up in households where this is traditional knowledge, we use field id. ///Texas Sized Violets/// Their flowers may be tiny and hidden but check out the leaves on this plant. Wowsa. This is one clump....just one of the gigantor violet clumps at @herbalgramabc. Violas are edible and medicinal. They are known for their soothing and demulcent properties. Traditionally they are often found in breast oils, and as a tea are quite delicious.
