Knight!Bucky x Hunteress!Reader
Warnings: Fluff-ish?, (poor attempt at) angst, blood {honestly idk}
A/N: If you don’t know me by now (and that’s perfectly fine), I really like medieval stuff and mythology. So I mostly try to write about swords and mythical beings. So yeah (basically the reader is like the goddess Artemis). Thank you @rotisserierogers for letting me participate in your halloween writing challenge! I don’t really know if this is halloween per say, but it kinda works…I‘m sorry if this is bad. X-D (unedited btw)

the shadow cast by the earth or moon over an area experiencing a partial eclipse.
There he was off on another mission for the king. Off to work with the best huntress in the kingdom, to catch the biggest game for the king’s masquerade ball tonight. He followed the map that led him to her small dwelling in the middle of the woods. While walking he recalled the stories about her, how she caught over 30 different game in one night. Villagers have said that she was only seen during the night time and that was when she frequently hunted. She was even considered as a goddess to the villagers.
While continuing walking he noticed the scenery around him. The forest was was dark and only little light from the moon shined through the tree branches. All of a sudden he heard something and paused. He turned his head looking around, but nothing was there. Keeping his eyes peeled and being more cautious he continued. He ended up at a small house, which he presumed the huntress lived. He drew near the house and knocked at the door, but there was no answer. He entered the house without knowing that she was behind him. She had been following since he entered the woods.
As he observed the tiny house he saw a small wax candle lit with fire. A dim light lit the tiny room and Bucky saw a small cot that could fit a single person. Looking around, he noticed a bowl of fruit and next to the fruit was a half eaten apple. “It still looks fresh.” Bucky said in his mind. He didn’t hear her enter the house, but he felt a presence behind him.
“Don’t move.” she demanded. “Who are you? Why are you here?” she asked Bucky.
Ignoring her first request Bucky slowly turned around to see her. She was beautiful, her (y/h/c) hair and her (y/e/c) eyes glistened with the fire light. As he turned even more she drew her sword closer to him. “I mean no harm. I’ve come in the name of King Rogers. He sent me here to find the huntress that the villagers proclaim to be their goddess.” He told her.
She smirked as she lowered her sword. “What do you want?” She said unfazed as she sat down on her small cot.
“The king has requested for me to find game with the help of you. He has heard from the villagers that you were the best huntress in the village and believes that you can catch a giant boar for his masquerade.” Bucky said to her. She looked at him unamused and closed her eyes.
“Aye I will help, but we need to start looking for the wild boar now.” She said as she gave in to his statement. She stood up and began to walk out the house.
He still stood there looking at her saying “Well this oughta be fun.” He began to follow her with his sword on his hip. “So, where should we start looking” he asked her. She said nothing and continued to walk with her bow. “Well then, can I at least know your name or should I call you goddess?” Bucky said with a cheeky grin.
She looked back at him with an arched eyebrow. “My name is (Y/N) and don’t listen to those villagers I’m not that almighty.” she replied. She continued walking and looked forward.
“It is nice to make your acquaintance (Y/N).” Bucky tried to say politely. “So how are we planning to find this wild boar?” he said while continuing in her footsteps.
“Shhhh!” she shushed him and pointed forward. There was a wild boar sleeping next to a tree. Bucky stepped forward, but she put her arm up to stop him. (Y/N) drew an arrow out of her quiver and began to line her arrow in her bow. With a clear shot she hit the boar on its stomach. The boar woke up, squealed and tried to run away. As it ran the two were on its trail behind it. With all the blood loss the boar grew tired and the two caught up. The boar gave up with defeat and lied on the ground motionless with its shallow breath. The two knelt next to the boar and Bucky took out his knife ready to kill it. The huntress stopped Bucky from stabbing it carelessly and grabbed his knife. She whispered “Thank you for your sacrifice boar. Now be with the gods.” With that the boar closed its eyes and (Y/N) slit its throat. Bucky was amazed and in awe with how this woman he just met effortlessly killed the boar.
“That was amazing!” Bucky exclaimed, “We should get this to the castle for the masquerade.” (Y/N) nodded and started to help pick up the boar to carry back to her house. Once they arrived at her house she got a wagon from the backyard. The both put the boar on the wagon and started heading towards the castle.
**Time skip to the masquerade**
Bucky had offered (Y/N) to the masquerade, but she gave him no justified answer. “I should have convinced her better.” Bucky said to himself. He walked outside to the balcony and stared at the night sky. He then drew his gaze to eh woods and the scenery around him. He saw a figure hiding in the shadows. He walked down the stairs of the balcony towards the mysterious figure. Getting closer to it he noticed it was (Y/N) and she was wearing a beautiful light green gown with olive green lace. She was even more beautiful that the first time Bucky saw her. The music from the ball was loud enough to hear. “May I have this dance (Y/N)?” he asked. She nodded and put her arms around Bucky’s neck and they began to dance under the moonlight. It seemed like the moon had a perfect spotlight directly on them. The moonlight illuminated (Y/N) eyes and her face lightened up. They connected their foreheads staring into eachothers eyes. It seemed like love at first sight as some people would say. Bucky became strong enough to kiss her. He began to lean in and she was hesitant at first, but then leaned in aswell. Their kiss was electrifying and a spark drew them closer. Not wanting to pull away Bucky drew back and looked into (Y/N)’s eyes and they smiled. There was a sound remarking that ball was beginning to start serving the boar they caught. Bucky tried to pull (Y/N) into the castle, but something was drawing her back. She knew she couldn’t enter that castle and had to leave Bucky.
“I have to go Bucky. I will explain to you soon. All due time.” she said as she kissed his lips one last time. She ran back into the forest without any tracks. Bucky stood there speechless and in shock. He stared off to where she ran away and sighed.
a state of great trouble or suffering.
Bucky waited all night for (Y/N) to come back to him and explain why she left. While dawn was drawing near he tried to convince to himself, “She will come out of the shadows. She must.” He just wanted to see her beautiful face again. He visited the woodlands every day for the past 5 months and never saw her. The beautiful gown she wore to the masquerade ball. He knew that he would never get to see her again, but little did he know that she was saving him from the truth.
