Platelet satellitism can be observed in blood smears obtained using the anticoagulant, EDTA. It is a rare condition that can cause pseudo-thombocytopenia. It looks like this ⬇️
Platelet clumps are observed surrounding WBCs (white blood cells). Since there are platelet clumps, the result in the machine is decreased. In order to get the absolute count or to correct this phenomenon, re-extract from the patient use the anticoagulant 3.2% sodium citrate or heparized tube. Then the blood smear looks like this ⬇️
