CHILDREN of UKRAINE, Medyka, 🇵🇱• On my last night at the border the wind picked up. It was still warm but the winds swept up big balls of dirt from the still to sprout farm fields adjacent. The sunset was beautiful that evening due to the clouds of dirt. Children and moms carried their pets in their arms of in kennels. Volunteers came to greet the pets and introduce themselves. No one was left behind. I little misunderstanding this morning and lack of the Polish language — the end result was I was under a (small) detention with the immigration police. I was on my morning walk, checking things out, and it appears that I wondered in to the forbidden areas between the borders of Ukraine and Poland. Also, the fact that I did not carry my passport with me (who does in America, right!) during the hike, presented another challenge. The Front Line! #Medyka is one of the major immigration points from Ukraine into Poland. Lots of good things happening here with many aid organizations, including UNHCR, World Central Kitchen AGAIN here, IOM UN Immigration, and tons of other support of free food and resources. In less than one day, I have met people helping from all over the world, including: Canada, Ireland, England, Ukraine, Poland - just to name a few. The flow of Ukrainian refugees has changed direction in Poland. And so has aid relief

Medyka is the busiest border crossing between Poland and Ukraine. Aid workers flocked there to set up tents offering assistance when the war started. But these days, the flow of refugees has shifted.

CHILDREN of UKRAINE, Medyka, 🇵🇱• Loaded onto busses, partial families drove off into the dusty western sunset to their next, likely temporary destination. I wondered how many different cities each bus load would be dispersed to. I got in my car and on the drive back to Krakow passed dozens of busses, international ambulances, and military convoys. Cars with Ukrainian license plates flew by me like I was standing still at 160km/h. Nothing more to lose, I guess. CHILDREN of UKRAINE, Medyka, 🇵🇱• The weather was warm. 18 degrees. Sun shining. The contrast of such a bright day and such a dark scenario was confusing. At times the line to load the busses was long. People would stand and wait until a bus arrived. People would push inside and the line would cease to exist. Then moments later a line of new families would begin to grow. Volunteers from Italy, France, Israel, India, China, the UK, and the states offered food, toys, water, blankets, and more. The support was incredible to witness, but I couldn’t help but think about what happens when these people arrive at their destination. Will the support continue? Will they settle in and become self sufficient? Will they be seen as a burden in the future by the countries that welcomed them? But at least at this moment, they were welcomed and taken care of, and I’d like to think that that moment, for them, would be meaningful. I stand with Ukraine.
