Master of Disguise
This was included in my second set of paintings, and I definitely regret making them the largest out of all of the paintings, as I feel it makes them dominate the overall composition. This painting is very concerned with identity and how we choose to present ourselves to the outside world vs the complex nature of your inner self, are we the disguise we choose to wear? it feels a little juvenile and self involved as a piece of art looking back on it now (about a month later.) But the project was in many ways in its infancy at this point. I took inspiration from one of my favourite painters James Ensor and his masked characters while painting this. I think if I painted this now I wouldn't include the lettering, as I think it detracts from the overall piece.
as with many of these paintings I liked it a lot more after adding some stippling to the back, which I think really turns it from something i was less proud of into something I quite like, if I had more time (or if i find a moment while preparing for the exhibition) I would add more stippling in green on the skin of the faces and hands.
