1. What is your favourite sentence you’ve ever written? Why?
Okay so this was harder than I thought it would be. I still really can’t even narrow it down to one sentence, and all my current favorites are from my most recent one shot Drive: Chasing Stars. But I’ll go with this as my favorite from that one: Magnus swallows around the lump that’s settled in his throat and looks down at the ring and then at Alec again, and the stars are just a little brighter, reflected back at him through Alec’s eyes.
Why: It captures a romance between Magnus and Alec that plays out in a moment that’s about something small and unexpected and thoughtful and I like to think that when it comes to the heart of their romance it plays out in those small, unexpected thoughtful moments and gestures.
2. Are there words, phrases, or images that you return to in your writing? i always tend to compare anything fitting together like puzzle pieces.
3. There’s that saying about how good writers just up and steal stuff. Have you ever read anything so good that you just had to have it and put it in what you were writing? What was it? What would you want someone to steal from you? Okay, so outright stealing is horrible, terrible, awful, and every other synonym for ‘bad’ that you can find. It’s also illegal. So while I have read the works of so many amazing writers (both inside and outside of fandom -- even some that are both), I’ve never been compelled to steal an idea. Sometimes ideas are really really similar, so if it seems really similar to something someone else has done, just have a chat with the other writer and get their take on it.
With that being said, as a fan fic writer, there are certain ideas/scenarios/etc. that are recycled and reimagined and it’s so fun to see how we can all take the same trope and come up with 745,000 different ways to write it.
4. Multi-chapter fic or one shot? When writing multi-chapter (if you do), do you plan everything ahead and then write, or do you just write as you go along? Typically one shots, though I am working on a multi-chapter Malec Broadway AU (which I will get back to working on as soon as I’m done with my sister’s wedding tomorrow). I’ve traditionally always just written as I went along, but with this one I’ve actually got a basic arc planned out/outlined and I think it’s going to help me immensely.
5. What motivates you to continue a fic you’ve already started and shared? reader feedback. comments, fanart, tweets, asks, reblogs…. i write fanfic because the experience of writing for fandom is completely unique <-- I’ll keep this answer because it is what keeps us going. I do write for myself, as I think most writers do, but that our work invokes an immediate reaction in all of those ways Sam listed above (and sometimes also by buying the piece of jewelry mentioned in a fic -- that’s happened to me too) is the best way to keep us inspired and motivated.
6. Is there anything in your writing you’d like to change or improve? oh man, is it okay to say everything?? LOL. I learn something new about writing in general, or about myself as a writer, every day, so much I’d love to improve on, that I know I need to be better at. But that’s why we keep writing, so we can improve. The fics I’m writing now are so vastly different (and better) than the fics I posted when I started writing for this fandom six months ago.
7. Is the fic you like to read the same as the fic you like to write? Sometimes but not always. I’m not heavy into pain and angst but In The Sin Bin, Take Me To Church, and The Children of Merlin own me. But give me a fic like Set Me In Motion (which also owns me) and that’s more up my alley of what I like to write.
8. How many fandoms do you write for? Are they all for one medium (television, books, film, etc.) or more than one? If more than one, is there a different feeling to writing for one as opposed to another? Just one - Malec. And while I have read the TMI books (and enjoyed them at the time I read them), I prefer television Malec over book Malec, so almost anything I write will be based off of show!Malec.
9. Is there something that you want to write that you haven’t yet? What’s stopping you? If you could only see inside my head, where I have about a million new ideas floating around (I see you nodding and grinning over there @darquebane), you’d know just how much I want to write but haven’t yet.
Tops on my list are Malec AUs: one inspired by (but not totally based on) “Single By 30″ and the new one that just hit me last night while seeing Maroon 5 in concert is a rock band AU (i don’t know why I’m like this either).
And ugh, time. Time is what’s stopping me. There’s so many ideas, so little time (especially when you add in irl things like day jobs, weddings, and making gifts for family expecting a new baby).
10. What’s the one no-good trope that’s #problematic that you just can’t break up with? Honestly, I don’t know? Because sometimes what others deem problematic is just general conflict between characters and that has to be there for the development of your characters and overall plot.
11. Post a link to one of your fics that you think has been overlooked and would like for more people to check out! :) Um ... maybe Lavender Haze? Magnus has gone off on a very dangerous mission and it’s about their reconnection when Magnus returns (warning: it’s NSFW).
I haven’t actually seen this going around so I’ll tag @lemonoclefox, @swans-hooks-and-books, & @jezthemadficster to do this (if you want to).
How do other writers keep from being distracted when they write? Because I can’t seem to figure it out.
There's a bird expo going on in my town today
I have no idea what that entails, but I want to go
