Talking about the new Megas part 2

Mega Skarmory - I adore the idea of it turning from silver to gold as a homage to its debut games (and maybe the overseas exclusives swap) and that they gave it those immense sharp talons that remind me so much of the Jacana bird.

Mega Barbaracle - Really, really cool design. The new silhouette has already won many people over to this otherwise not widely liked Pokémon. The added Fighting type it swapped its Water subtype for makes a lot of sense with its additional extremities.

Mega Pyroar - Unfortunately this one is the major miss for me. I like the idea of combining the male and females manes to form an even lager mane that is also a fiery kanji as well as its stockier body, but in execution it looks more unwieldy and barely different than anything interesting. The new shiny is cool but that's about it.

Mega Scolipede - As a huge Scolipede fan? This one is a winner. The extremely imposing horns make it look extra threatening and the whirlipede-like body armor gives it the appearance of a knight and a steed combined into one. Extremely cool decision.

Mega Scrafty - Its shed skin evolving into a huge body covering hood is very nice and matches its demeanor to a tee. It takes its base form concept of molting into its new body and cranks it up a notch. I do like it a lot.

Mega Starmie - This one is what I said about Feraligatr's being divisive but about ten times more. On its face, the fact that it just grows legs sounds super disappointing but I'm not gonna lie... I think many will be won over by its animations, which they tailored to memetic potential and ran with them to make it an expressive if still very goofy on purpose Mega. I do appreciate the creepy dex entry about it maybe mimicking humanoid bodies to supplant us, too. Also it does the pose for the starman enemy line from Earthbound so that's a bonus in my book.

Mega Falinks - Falinks was always a pretty cool idea, but making them into a megazord-like formation for its Mega is even more so in my opinion. Mark me down as a fan.

Mega Drampa - Another one of my underrated faves gets a super cool Mega. I love the idea that the energy of Mega Evolution rejuvenated its body into its younger self when it was in its prime. The dark, stormy clouds look is amazing, my only complaint is that they didn't swap its Normal type for an Electric subtype, which would have been more fitting.

Mega Floette - It honestly figured that Eternal Flower Floette would get its own Mega and it doesn't disappoint even if it is a very simple design. I love the huge flower and how it seems sentient, as well as how Floette climbs its attached stem for its animations.

Mega Zygarde - I do like it overall, having that HUGE cannon attached to it makes a threatening presence even if its role is that of a protector. The more humanoid body honestly reminds me of an alien bodysuit, which is cool but I do think Complete Form Zygarde is a tad cooler in my eyes, still.

Pokemon review request: Mega Pyroar

Mega Pyroar has been pretty loathed ever since it was released, and I wish I could stand up and defend it and tell you all that Mega Pyroar is great and you're all wrong, actually. Except I can't do that, because Mega Pyroar sucks.

Let's get the good out of the way: I do like how the light brown fur around the front paws sticks up to match the back legs, and the red on the face is a neat idea. And...that's all I got.

The concept here is that Pyroar's mane has the kanji for fire (火) in its mane, so Mega Pyroar expands it to 炎 (flame). However, I don't feel like making alphabet-based puns is the best idea in an international game; it will be lost on most audiences, unlike visual concepts that are more universal even if the exact reference is lost (like all of the yokai-based 'mons).

And even ignoring that (as GameFreak probably doesn't care about international audiences that much), wordplay is just...not that strong of an idea. I'd say it at least expands on Pyroar's concept, except the issue is that female Pyroar never had the kanji. The main thing was that they were cool dimorphic fire lions, and the kanji was a nice bonus touch.

In fact, poor female Pyroar really got ignored here completely due to them both only getting a single form. Normally I'd at least enjoy being able to have your Pokemon trans its gender, but here it just feels lazy. Unlike Mega Meowstic, which had the single form as the entire root of its concept, Mega Pyroar only has one form because they designed one for the male and then didn't want to spend time making another one. I can't even say the two designs are blended well; the only female element here is the tip of the long mane.

And on top of all that, Mega Pyroar just...doesn't look good. We are at Sordward and Shielbert levels of silly hair, and that is never a level you want to reach. Plus, the design of the body changes very little. It feels like the tail tip could've become red and yellow, the mane could've run down the back and tail, the light brown areas could've been a different color, etc., but instead it's basically the same minus the sillier mane.

So unfortunately, this is a case of a bad concept with a bad execution and underwhelming overall design. It's a shame, as I feel like giving Pyroar a mega wasn't a bad idea, but this ain't it.

To end things on a positive note, here's an excellent redesign from @lutraviolet. Note the changes made the body (such as the matching tail tip), the addition of purple to differentiate it from the non-mega, the less goofy design, and the improved integration of the female's mane:

It's the fourth type mirror match of the tournament so far, with the Fire type being the one on display here!

The dog from hell itself, it's Mega Houndoom! A fan favourite from Generation 2 given a tougher new form, this Mega evolves with the Houndoomite, an item with the index number 666. It's safe to say that the hellish theme only intensifies with the energy powering its mega form! The body of Mega Houndoom radiates with intense heat, and its claws turn red with an almost melting heat that even causes the Pokémon pain. It then channels this fiery energy into flaming breath that turns its foes to charcoal! Everything about this Pokémon is full of furious power, and it's a fitting evolution on a beloved Pokémon. Does that earn it a vote?

Well, a newer fiery Mega is in the way, and it's Mega Pyroar! Coming from Legends Z-A, Mega Pyroar is a newer addition to the Mega collection, and has a few rather interesting points! For one, regular Pyroar is a Pokémon with distinct gender differences- ones that disappear when mega evolving, as both male and female Pyroar take on the form you see above. The distinctly different manes become a mix of both, grander even than the mane of the king of the pride- and referencing the kanji for fire. In this form, Mega Pyroar's already devastating flamethrower goes from a heat of 6,000 degrees Celsius, to 10,000! You don't want to stand in the way of that! When it comes to its battle prowess though, Mega Pyroar is a little interesting with the way its 100 bonus stat points are distributed. Where most Pokémon will have their stronger stats be the focus of the bonus power, Pyroar gains an even 20 points in every stat that can be altered by mega evolution. In a sense, its a very balanced fighter! Distinct in many ways, can the feline in this cat and dog battle come out ahead?
