Me: Of course I know that Starship is just a silly, lighthearted comedy and I shouldn’t think too deeply about it.

Also Me: Mega-Girl has spent her whole life being objectified and only valued conditionally as a tool. She may revel in the many ways she is superior to humans, but her hatred of them is rooted in resenting that they created her (“How could you make me so like you, and yet so unlike you?”). Listen to how she describes herself - a “hollow parody” of life? A “purposeless slave” of “little consequence”? That is not a positive self-image! The source of her homicidal rage is self-loathing due to her robotic nature. She has fully internalized the human prejudice that she is “not real” and “unable to truly feel” and therefore unworthy of rights or love. Based on her parallels to the Terminator robots (the recommended way to kill her is to lower her slowly into lava), it’s highly plausible that she and other robots in this universe cannot self-terminate either and their constant anger is the result of being trapped in slavery without even the escape of suicide.

Tootsie is frequently dismissed and insulted for his lack of intelligence, which he is well aware of (“I may be dumb”, “I don’t know anything”). But unlike Mega-Girl, he has secure self-esteem because he accepts himself and appreciates his other good qualities. He has a great deal of compassion, empathy, honesty, courage, loyalty and crucially, emotional intelligence: he understands feelings, when people are lying about them (“folks say they’re fine when I know that they’re blue”) and their inherent importance(“The feeling I get when you’re close to me, when all my hairs stand up? That’s real.”). The one thing he understands is the same one Mega-Girl doesn’t. The parts of himself he values the most are the the same ones Mega-Girl despises herself for not having. So of course he’s the human to see that she deserves and is capable of love! He knows what it’s like to be treated like you’re less than, but also that everyone still matters just the same no matter how different they are.

By treating her personhood as a given when everyone else she’s met has done the opposite, he makes her respect herself and seek autonomy. He inspires her to want more out of life than what her oppressors want from her (“when you look at me, I don’t wanna be programmed this way”). After she falls for him, she stands up to her legal owner Junior, refusing to follow his orders, objecting to him risking her life and taking offence and even slapping him when he objectifies her again. She’s starting to value herself. However, she still can’t shake the idea that love is at best fundamentally conditional when you’re a robot, hence her fear of Tootsie leaving her. His declaration of unconditional love stops her rampage because finally believing that she is lovable, and has worth, as she is heals her low self-esteem, the source of her bloodlust and resignation to her programming.

In conclusion, they’re perfect for each other and I love them. And oh my God, Tootsie Mega-Girl renamed himself their ship name. What’s their actual ship name, then? Man vs Machine? No, wait… Mega-Toots.

OK FIRST OFF I HAVE A REFERENCE SHEET

HERES A MORE FLESHED OUT VER OF HIS BACKSTORY (also their weapon did change it is a spear so they can kebab pincer like how they did in the og starship) they were a familiar of the overqueen witch also know as Queen Entoma (i wrote her name out in witch runes :3) —

— when a couple years back a powerful team of magical girls died in the labyrinth, they’re soul gems breaking sent out some magical energy which cause some nearby familiars (bug, roach, bugette, the mosquito bros + sweetheart) sentient. bug spent most of their time sentient finding random stuff that the magical girls left behind, believing them to be lost and was able to somewhat learn japanese from it ANYWAY later feb wanders in, mistakenly thinking the rest of the gleeful 4 (her group) was in there and then got hit in the eyes by a web of a spider-like familiar and was blinded, calling out for her team, bug finds her and helps her out, pretending to be another magical girl, before feb can see them they run back to the labyrinth and finds kyupin (kyuubey + pincer) and decides to wish to be a magical girl! turning into a teen girl along with fake documents and an apartment (the wish was like specifically “I wanna be a human magical girl, with a life outside of this place!” that’s why the fake documents n apartment were created) she starts going to mitakihara and meets up with feb again and becomes the now fifth member of the now gleeful 5 (their first meeting is similar to that of madoka and homuras in the second timeline where homura was like ‘OMG IM A MAGICAL GIRL TOO!!!’) but little does bug know the more he uses their human form the more her soul gem gets darker (if they turn into a witch they’ll just make another overqueen but will still be bug, so then there would just kinda be 2 overqueens) ALSO I MADE HEIGHT CHARTS

also i didn’t talk a lot abt the other characters but i’m planning on tootsie noodles n krayonder (maybe jr too ??) being magical girls (specifically a duo/trio who sometimes work with the gleeful 5) anyway jr is the son of the like mayor of mitakihara or a descendant of the founder (haven’t decided) so his family is kinda famous :3 he and feb are the most popular kids in school, the rest of the gleeful 5 are popular by extension but bug a little less because… to the other students something is just… off about her? only feb really seems to not have any wariness towards them. tootsie noodles and krayonder are also kinda popular because krayonder is specs childhood friend and tootsie has been hanging around mega girl recently and she doesn’t seem to mind. OH YEAH I DREW FEB

also here’s mitakihara uniform bug

anyways up is also taz’s adopted father !! Also for nationalities and parent situations and wishes !! for the ones who i’ve figured out what they wished for and haven’t said yet :3 Bug pretends to be from America and they recently moved to japan after their parents died cause that was where they were born and their parents are from so their only relatives live here, febs parents are americans who moved to japan before she was born and when taz’s parents died they had a brief friendship the year before so she wished for taz to be able to still stay with a relative, taz is half japanese half spanish, taz’s parents died a year ago (in this they are all 15 except for up and also if ur like ‘wow these are some tall 15 yr olds’ I KNOW but like… 15 year olds nowadays r either really tall or really short) and up, being their only living relative (like distant uncle) taz had to move in with them, she wished for the ability to be strong (mainly so she could get through the death of her parents) but it made her more closed off and angry, but did make her physically strong, jr is half japanese half american and his parents are FUCKING LOADED but never home, he wished for power and popularity, krayonder is japanese and has a good life even if he moved around a lot when he was younger he was still able to keep in contact with specs, coincidentally, that’s also what he wished for! tootsie is half american half japanese and was raised on a farm, his family moved to mitakihara recently, I CANT THINK OF A WISH <\3 mega girl is japanese and lived in mitakihara her whole life, her parents were closed off and indifferent about most things but unlike them, she was pretty emotional, when she went through her first heartbreak (it was baaad), she wished for the ability to feel less, and now only has slight inklings of feelings instead. specs is japanese and i honestly have no idea for but her mother was a teacher at mitakihara uni and her father was a engineer, she wished for the ability to be as smart as her parents want her to be. Up is spanish and moved to japan recently when he found out that his distant niece had no home and didn’t want her to go through the foster care system, he also found out about the magical girl thing when he asked taz about why the ring she kept wearing recently kept changing between a bright red and a murky red, and taz was kinda shocked but shocked enough that she just told him about being a magical girl. Up is an old war veteran also and his house became the DHS (designated hangout spot) for the gleeful 5.

OH YEAH they r also all gonna get alt names, not just bug :3 but I haven’t figured those out yet, I also haven’t drawn the other chars yet so that’s why there’s only feb and bug art :3 ALSO I’m planning on turning this into a fic !! I’m not the best writer and still need to find somebody to beta it but SOON.
