A beautiful beetle I found in some goldenrod in Western Montana. The first (head-on) photo is probably in my top 10 for favorite shots I’ve taken, and it was a complete accident- I literally only took it because I wanted to make sure they weren’t a wasp before I shoved my hand into their flowers for a better pic
Lol wise to be sure first. This friend is one of the longhorn beetles in the genus Megacyllene. Probably a locust borer, but there's at least one other species that looks similar, so I'd need more photos to be positive on the ID.
A locust borer beetle (Megacyllene robiniae) digs for summer gold in the budding flowers of grass-leaved goldenrod (Euthamia graminifolia).

Found a couple of locust borers (Megacyllene robiniae) resting on the undersides of milkweed leaves in my yard. They must have spent all day munching on goldenrod pollen because they were both leaving behind little trails of bright yellow frass...
