This is the updated list for me to refer back, to. I’ve updated the numbers, too (some of them are unexplained, but I’ll just trust myself - I’ve been very conservative, i.e. added an extra film on for the new star wars one, reading kokoro, etc).

day-400 mega-update, part 1: thoughts on the list.
(I’m a little early for 400 days, but whatevs)
So, I’m going to go through this whole list again and give my thoughts on the different goals and make changes where I see fit. Part 2 will be the new list which I will refer to from now on.
start date: 15/12/2014

All of the above rules are staying just because I still want to do them and I think that they are good and well-defined and easy to record goals and I think that I can manage them!
Review this list 101 times (17/101)
Have £10,000 in savings by the end of the 1001 days (£3417.19/£10000)
Have 5 swimming lessons (0/5)
Give/raise £500 for charity (5/500)
The above four goals, I feel are unlikely to be reached, but… I’m leaving them here for now. I still want to try, even as unlikely as it seems. My savings have been cleared out my my Japanese internship… There’s nowhere in Bristol to have swimming lessons, and they are incredibly expensive… My reviews on this list are further behind than makes any sense…
Goals that are receiving small amendments (8/101):
Mega-review this list 10 times (2/10)
Mega review this list 5 times (2/5)
I’m reducing this because 10 times feels like too much moving of the goalposts. Even now, as I’m moving this particular goal post, I’m aware that I don’t want to be given the opportunity to do this 8 more times in the next year and a half. I do want to keep evaluating whether I want to achieve these goals, and adding space for more goals, but equally, I don’t want to give myself too much of an opportunity to sabotage myself by making my goals ever-easier… 3 more times is enough times.
go running 3 times a week for 12 consecutive weeks (1/12)
go running 3 times a week for 12 (mostly consecutive weeks (1/12)
This is staying the same, except with the understanding that if there happens to be a holiday in the middle, that’s not a problem… I don’t have to start over.
Spend 50 hours drawing land/cityscapes (0/50)
Do 50 drawings of land/cityscapes
Jjust seems like more fun.
Make a website for my comics
Make a (more general purpose) personal/proffesional-ish/portfolio website
To put on business cards and the like.
Make a mirror site on tapastic/comicweaver, etc for SHLC
Try making a tapastic for one comic
Try making a comicweaver for one comic…
So one has become two and also not necessarily SHLC, because I’m not sure whether SHLC is the sort of thing that will do well on either of these platforms or if I’m even going to make SHLC any time soon…
Post on reddit and webcomicunderdogs about SHLC for each update (0/10?)
Post on webcomic underdogs, each time I have a finished short comic for people to read (?/?)
Reddit can wait until I have a proper webcomic (if ever that day arrives).
Make one piece of comic concept art per day for 100 consecutive days (0/100)
Make one small piece of art per day for 100 consecutive days (10 cheat days allowed). (0/100).
Just because I should be able to draw whatever… I will probably still focus on concept art for either games or comics mostly.
Rules that are being swapped out:
Go to either a pole-dancing, aerial hoop or acro-yoga taster day/class (0/1).
Because at the moment those previous ones don’t appeal as much for whatever reason.
Cycle everywhere for 30 consecutive days (0/30)
Cycle up park street without stopping
These two goals had to go because my bike has been stolen and there’s no chance of me affording another ☹. But hopefully it will make space for an equally enriching goal.
Grow a plant that bears fruit
Grow a herb from seeds
These goals are being swapped out since I feel like gardening doesn’t make sense for me in Bristol at the moment. Gardening seems like something you do when you’re laying down roots. I’ll be leaving Bristol (probably) in a short amount of time and I’d like to save these tasks for when I have my own garden or allotment.
Surprise Tom by cleaning the whole house 3 times (0/3)
Do the washing up when it isn’t my turn 20 times (0/20)
Me and tom no longer live alone together, so these don’t feel as relevant.
Make friends dinner 10 times (0/10)
Call my grandma 50 times (0/50)
Call my mum 101 times (6/101)
Call my dad 50 times (4/50)
Visit friends in Leeds 5 times (0/5)
These things are all still really important, but actually I feel like I’ve outgrown them being on my list… I am pretty proud of how my relationships are doing at the moment and I want to continue to prioritise them, but I’m not good at keeping track of them. Honestly I put these things on the list with the thought that these relationships probably wouldn’t improve, but at least I wouldn’t feel guilty about them… Actually with a small amount of effort they improved a lot, and now I don’t feel the need to track them so closely because it’s not about assuaging my own guilt, it’s just about tending to the relationships, which I have a good instinct for the timing with. Yay progress.
See an animal in the wild that I’ve never seen in the wild before
This is a bad goal that I have no control over.
Buy gifts from charity shops (0/5)
I dunno… I do want to buy more things from charity shops, but unless people want house things this is tough! And not everyone wants house things. I’ll just have to decorate my own house with charity shop purchases (one day <3) and buy any fancy dress stuff from there.
Visit a spanish-speaking country (apart from to see my grandma)
This is incompatible with money troubles. This will have to wait until after the 1001 days -_-. I hope by then my Spanish will be suitably banging.
Implement clustering and write it up (0/1)
I implemented the clustering but I didn’t write it up (yet), but this is a lame goal because it’s too specific. It won’t make me feel good to complete it. There’s loads of things I need to write up. This one thing is a drop in the ocean!
Stick to the update schedule for 12 consecutive weeks (0/12)
I’m not sure anything I make will be long enough to require an update schedule. If that changes, this will once again become a priority, but I’m currently thinking that my work is more likely to be a series of short comics at least for the time being.
Make an (at least) 15-second animation
I’m not sure this is something that would make me happy any more.
Complete the script for the dino games comics
Complete the dino games comics
These are leaving because I think the dino game is too ambitious for me right now and the idea for the dino game comics is kinda bad lol.
Goals that are being swapped in (18 goals):
Completely use up everything in my cupboards and freezer (with the exception of the pantry items that I actually use i.e. salt, pepper, cinnamon…)
This is mostly about not buying stuff I don’t need and learning to only buy stuff I need by forcing myself to use what I have in, but also it will be a boon to money-saving.
Sell 10 items
This is mostly about the fact that I’ve been living in Japan in a suuuuper tiny room with a suitcase’s worth of stuff for 6 months and I didn’t miss having a lot of stuff, and even didn’t need some of the stuff in this tiny room. So, I can bear to get rid of some things. But also it will be a boon to money-saving. Things can include original artwork, old books, clothes, whatever….
Stick to 4:3 (3 UDs, 4 DDs) for 4 weeks strictly
This is to see how it makes me feel, to save some money on food and to try and help me lose some weight.
Spend exactly 1 tomato per day (25 minutes) writing up PhD related things for 2 weeks (not allowed to write more or less).
I want to write up some PhD stuff in a non-stressful way. And I want to see if only letting myself do a small amount is helpful for productivity or not.
Spend 4 tomatoes per day doing PhD work, 5 days a week for 4 weeks.
Not writing as above, although writing can be included… but mostly programming. This is an attempt at habit forming, but if not habit forming it will certainly be damage control.
Use up all my polymer clay
Use up all my wool
I want to have less stuff and I also want to make more creative stuff, so these goals are about that. It will be hard! Selling or giving away to a person who actually wants them is also good using up… but throwing away or giving to a charity shop is not (for these items only).
Write my thesis.
This is here again. I think it needs to be here to remind me that this is what I’m aiming for. I’m quite scared at the moment that I won’t have the opportunity to try and do this. That I haven’t done enough work and that I never will have and that no thesis I could write would be worthy of a PhD. This is a kind of lofty goal, but a few lofty goals are okay as long as I have other goals that lead up to them (and the tomato goals are the leading up goals)
Write my second year review and hand it in
For my first year review, I didn’t hand it in because I was stressed and I didn’t want to. This time I’m going to hand it in because I’m only fucking myself over for my thesis if I don’t. I need writing practice and I need feedback and I need to be audited whether I like it or not (I don’t).
Enter a Ludum Dare and hand something in
I tried to enter LD recently and I really liked the little idea I came up with and I did some pretty good and quick programming and some cute programmer art and it made me feel kinda proud but I got overambitious and didn’t do something finishable. I’d like to try and do something finishable and submit something whether it sucks or not (it will). I also might ask my friends if they want to enter with me, because that would be super fun!
Apply to table 5 more conventions ( I will aim for 6: 2 ELCAFs, 2 thought bubbles and 2 bristol zine fairs) (0/5)
I probably won’t make the cut, but I want to keep trying.
Get some business cards made.
This is a good idea for if you go to conventions, so I should do it.
Answer “the 50 questions that will free your mind”
Just because it will be fun and interesting (to me).
Compose a song
I can do it in any way, but I’d like to try and use beepbox. I just want to try this out and maybe I’d use it for a game or something.
Build the ultimate sandcastle
I love sandcastles and several times this year I have tried to build my ultimate sandcastle but run out of time, so I wanna give myself a whole day to build the sandcastle of my dreams! It’s silly and a waste of time but it’ll make me happy!
Re-open an ISA, once the new fiscal year begins
Set up a small standing order of money for savings into the ISA:
Two obvious money goals.
Complete 3 artworks that I would consider “portfolio pieces” (0/3)
For a website, and for a sense of finishing something.
ALREADY COMPLETED (14)
Go snorkelling
Have a manicure
Write a letter to myself to open on the final day.
Set up a direct debit for my savings account

Go ice-skating

Apply for 3 internships (0/3)
HERE THEY ARE. Some of those long awaited new pages to Ch 9 of MyStereobot. Apologies for not keeping promises, but the comic is not dead! Stay tuned, it’ll be back on regular schedule hopefully.

May 6th 2015
I had planned to stick to doing my shakes during the outing, but just said meh fuck it day one. Had some dunkin donuts for breakfast Mmm spicy flat bread.
We drove downstate to Rehoboth and got there before check in. So we went to lunch at applebee’s. Ended up getting a turkey and coleslaw sandwich with sweet potato fries.
By the time we got done eating we checked into the hotel and got organized. Ended up vegging out in the room until we used their pool in the afternoon for a few hours.
I took a shower, made a turkey sandwich with the lunch meat we packed and got to bed around 12am.
------------------------------------
May 7th 2015
Woke up around 9am. Got changed and went downstairs for the free breakfast. Made two waffles and had two glasses of orange juice. Felt ill because I ate so much. No regrets. Went back up to the room and crashed out again until like 11am.
Got up and got dressed again, went to McDonalds for an iced coffee and then we hit the sea shell shop to look around. Bought some souvenirs and then we played putt putt golf.
Ended up meeting Tiffany’s sister Amber at the old time photo place and we all dressed up and got our picture taken. Maybe I’ll post it later since I left it at home.
After the pictures, we walked down to the purple parrot and got lunch. Had fried pickles as an appetizer. I ordered snow crab legs with sweet potato fries and steamed veggies. Pretty healthy right? :P
They gave me 2 full crabs and the sides for 12$ and it was fucking amazing. Best meal I had the whole time we were down there.
After lunch we shopped around (picked up fudge from candy kitchen for kelly <3 ) And then even though it was foggy we went to the beach itself to fly kites and play in the sand like 12 year olds. It was really nice honestly.
Once Tiffany got tired we packed everything up and took it back to the car. We had Coldstone Ice cream for dinner because adults. Then back to the room.
Played Cards Against Humanity and this other card game called Ladies night out. Went to bed around 12-1am
------------------------------------------
May 8th 2015
Friday morning I was up again by 9am. Went downstairs. Had another Waffle and some more OJ. Came back upstairs and packed our shit up. Took it to the car and checked out by about 11am.
We ran all over shopping at the outlets. I bought some new shorts and two new pairs of jeans to replace the old pair that ripped 30 minutes after we got to the hotel on Wednesday.
We had lunch at Bethany Blues. I got a Ruben and a cup of crap asparagus soup. And we all shared fried pickles again.
We finished up shopping at the outlet and then went back to Sea Shell Shop because Tiffany wanted to buy a hermit crab. We ended up playing Putt putt gold again since Amber missed out on the first day.
I had a blast. We said our goodbyes, and then Hilary and I drove back up.
I ended up getting home around 7pm. Went on a date with the girlfriend to Fudruckers once she got home. Had more sweet potato fries and a 1/3 lbs inferno burger. :P
Went to be early since I was so tired. About 10:30pm ish.
------------------------------------
May 9th 2015
Woke up around 11am. Got breakfast/Lunch with Ryan and Kelly at McDonalds. Oh the shame. I ate a big mac and fries. :(
After lunch we went back to the house for a few minutes while we waited for our buddy Pat to show up. Once he got there we grabbed our skate boards and drove down to Elkton MD skatepark.
It was hot as fuck down there. Christ. Stupid hot for no reason. My phone said it was only 74. 74 my ass. I was sweating my ass off standing around in the shade for fuck sakes.
After an hour or so some clouds passed overhead and it cooled down a bit. Everyone was still dying from heatstroke tho. I still didn’t attempt to drop in, and I kind of took it easy since I thought it was going to be leg day.
around 5:30 we left and got rita’s water ice on the way home. I got home and relaxed a bit and we were about to go to the gym. Only to look up the closing time and see it was 7pm. We wouldn’t have enough time to get there and complete our work out.
So we did some shoulder exercises out front with the resistance bands, medicine ball and what not. We did push ups in sets of 10. and after a few sets sets of 5s.
I still managed to do about 52 pushups tho. That’s something I’m super proud of. And I’m talking chest to the ground push ups too.
We went for a walk afterwards and went down to the walk track. I ran around once at a pretty decent pace. Got a side stitch and felt like poop. Didn’t have enough water for the day it seems.
When we got back I took a shower, and everyone was in the middle of prepping dinner. Our friend Megan came over that we haven’t seen in like 2 years. And she was always into cooking. She has a nice job now working in a kitchen too so I’m super proud of her. She’s doing really well for only 20 years old :)
She basically made us dinner. Had spinach, zucchini, grilled pineapple and some awesomely marinaded chicken. It was a great way to end a perfect day in my opinion.
------------------------------------
Today is back to the grind until the big vacation on the 17th. I’m going back to shakes this morning and I’m also back at work. Today we are going to do leg day as soon as I get off of work since it’s Sunday the Gym closes early. So we don’t have any time to play around. I gotta get changed the second I get back and I’ll have to drink my pre workout in the car.
Some things I thought of as the list was continuing - things that haven’t come from getting rid of old goals. This is where I’m going to explain what those goals are and why I want to do them.
The new list is a lot more focused on comics and games stuff because that part of the list is important to me but I was finding it hard to move ahead with - perhaps partly because there were lots of intermediate steps that weren’t included on my list.
Mega-update this list 10 times (0/10)
This is HARD, but necessary. It’s hard because it’s scary. I have to think about what I’m doing and why and the direction I want my life to go in. But it’s necessary because there’s no point in putting effort into achieving my goals if I’m not sure A) why I want to and B) that I really do want to achieve them.
Go to either a pole-dancing, aerial hoop or acro-yoga taster day/class (0/1).
This is the sort of thing that is out of my comfort zone as a lazy person, but that I really want to try. It always looks *amazing* and I think I might have a chance at converting some of that ugly jealousy into something productive (i.e. exercise that I look forward to and enjoy).
Make maquettes (at least heads) of 5 different characters (0/5)
I think this would be educational and fun and new and I just want to do it. Also, I have some sculpy and a twisted up coat-hanger (I had to untwist it to open a drawer that was stuck) that I could use as an armature so I have everything I need.
Work on a (non-SHLC) script for at least 1 hour every day for 30 days (0/30)
Complete the script for the dino games comics
Complete the SHLC script
Recently I read a book about script-writing. I didn’t really learn anything about script-writing exactly, but I learned that it’s okay to spend time on it. That the story is IMPORTANT and that fighting the urge to write so that I can do the art doesn’t make any sense. So I wanted to spend time on this and I’d been fighting it because I thought I was subconsciously trying to avoid the “work” of sketching, inking and colouring... So now I’m going to do it and I’m excited because it means better comics!
Work on SHLC every day for 30 days (0/30)
I want to get into the habit of working on it a little each day. With something small like SHLC, that might be enough to finish it (after the aforementioned script-writing, which is already started).
Make a mirror site on tapastic/comicweaver, etc for SHLC
Post on reddit and wu about SHLC for each update (0/10?)
These are things that I’ve heard are helpful for promoting a comic. I figured that I would try them out with SHLC.
Make one piece of concept art per day for 100 consecutive days (0/100)
This is something that I heard gigidigi did for cucumber quest. It’s another way of getting into a routine of working on something/fleshing out an idea. I am hoping to do this for either my dino game or possibly my next comic idea.
Complete one small game and make it available online as a test
I have a simple-ish idea for this and I think I could learn a lot from it. I’ll think about doing it when my dino-game gets to a bit of a cross-roads.
I think having it available online would be fun as I’d like to see if I can get any feedback for something simple.
Complete the dino games comics
This needs doing and I’m exited to do it! The perfect reason for it to be on the list!
Make a small functional robotic thing
I’ve been wanting to do this forever. I have a few different ideas. Most of which involve my raspberry pi. This is mostly fun, but also robotics features a lot in teaching kids science and in museum-y stuff, which is an area I am considering as a career so it’s one of my less frivolous ideas.
Get my raspberry pi working
Being a bit more in-tune with how raspberry pis work would be good for outreach + science stuff as well as hobbyish stuff, like that above.
