Some things I thought of as the list was continuing - things that haven’t come from getting rid of old goals. This is where I’m going to explain what those goals are and why I want to do them.
The new list is a lot more focused on comics and games stuff because that part of the list is important to me but I was finding it hard to move ahead with - perhaps partly because there were lots of intermediate steps that weren’t included on my list.
Mega-update this list 10 times (0/10)
This is HARD, but necessary. It’s hard because it’s scary. I have to think about what I’m doing and why and the direction I want my life to go in. But it’s necessary because there’s no point in putting effort into achieving my goals if I’m not sure A) why I want to and B) that I really do want to achieve them.
Go to either a pole-dancing, aerial hoop or acro-yoga taster day/class (0/1).
This is the sort of thing that is out of my comfort zone as a lazy person, but that I really want to try. It always looks *amazing* and I think I might have a chance at converting some of that ugly jealousy into something productive (i.e. exercise that I look forward to and enjoy).
Make maquettes (at least heads) of 5 different characters (0/5)
I think this would be educational and fun and new and I just want to do it. Also, I have some sculpy and a twisted up coat-hanger (I had to untwist it to open a drawer that was stuck) that I could use as an armature so I have everything I need.
Work on a (non-SHLC) script for at least 1 hour every day for 30 days (0/30)
Complete the script for the dino games comics
Complete the SHLC script
Recently I read a book about script-writing. I didn’t really learn anything about script-writing exactly, but I learned that it’s okay to spend time on it. That the story is IMPORTANT and that fighting the urge to write so that I can do the art doesn’t make any sense. So I wanted to spend time on this and I’d been fighting it because I thought I was subconsciously trying to avoid the “work” of sketching, inking and colouring... So now I’m going to do it and I’m excited because it means better comics!
Work on SHLC every day for 30 days (0/30)
I want to get into the habit of working on it a little each day. With something small like SHLC, that might be enough to finish it (after the aforementioned script-writing, which is already started).
Make a mirror site on tapastic/comicweaver, etc for SHLC
Post on reddit and wu about SHLC for each update (0/10?)
These are things that I’ve heard are helpful for promoting a comic. I figured that I would try them out with SHLC.
Make one piece of concept art per day for 100 consecutive days (0/100)
This is something that I heard gigidigi did for cucumber quest. It’s another way of getting into a routine of working on something/fleshing out an idea. I am hoping to do this for either my dino game or possibly my next comic idea.
Complete one small game and make it available online as a test
I have a simple-ish idea for this and I think I could learn a lot from it. I’ll think about doing it when my dino-game gets to a bit of a cross-roads.
I think having it available online would be fun as I’d like to see if I can get any feedback for something simple.
Complete the dino games comics
This needs doing and I’m exited to do it! The perfect reason for it to be on the list!
Make a small functional robotic thing
I’ve been wanting to do this forever. I have a few different ideas. Most of which involve my raspberry pi. This is mostly fun, but also robotics features a lot in teaching kids science and in museum-y stuff, which is an area I am considering as a career so it’s one of my less frivolous ideas.
Get my raspberry pi working
Being a bit more in-tune with how raspberry pis work would be good for outreach + science stuff as well as hobbyish stuff, like that above.
Since I haven't completed a item off of my list since I began this so I will tell you a little story about one of the more recent ones.
# 162 - Finish my journal
Completed:8/31/12
Ever since I was a little girl, journaling has been an incredibly important and helpful constant in my life. Some of my first journal entrees started off as, "Dear Diary, Today we wore jeans to school. It was awesome. Your friend, Dana." I don't even now what got me started with journaling. My Mom never journaled, nobody I knew ever wrote their thoughts down, so I guess I just picked it up on my own.
I am completely addicted to it. My journal is something that has tracked my thoughts since I was a little girl, growing up to be a teenager (and all of the drama that comes with that), entering high school, and then now, throughout college and growing into an adult. One of my favorite things to do is sit down with a old journal and read about my life back when I was in 9th grade. Most of the time I laugh and think, "What the hell was I thinking?!" They always bring up great memories but sometimes, not so great memories. However, everything that has happened in my life has made me become the person I am today.
The journal that I completed ran from exactly 1/29/10 - 8/31/12...I filled up every single page with writing or momentos from things that have happened in my life. I have papers and movie tickets and letters and whatever else I could tape onto the pages of that journal. Every monumental moment of my life from that time period (including that one entry that I wrote completely drunk....it's probably the funniest thing I've ever written) is documented in that journal and when I am old and grey one day, I cannot wait to look back at that journal and remember...just remember....
In addition to featuring my "1001 Things to Do" completions on here, I will also add in posts about my life such as fitness and health or travelling (something I plan to do more of) or food or movies or whatever else happens on a day to day basis.
And that will beginnnnnnnns.....NOW!!!
So I have the most brilliant Christmas present idea for everyone that I work with. I've decided to be especially crafty this year, making about 50% of the gifts SO I thought it would be perfect if I made something for everyone at work, too. I usually buy them all something but since there are about 20 of them, it gets reallllly expensive. I know Christmas is all about giving and yadda yadda but come on! I'm a poor college student for heaven's sake!
I found the idea on Pinterest, however, I'm not sure where the idea originated from so I can't really give credit to anyone specifically, but the idea is to take a round, glass ornament....modge podge the crap out of it.....stick pieces of paper torn from a Christmas book to it.....sprinkle with glitter...and voila! A beautiful, hand-made-with-love Christmas ornament.
I also bought cardboard lookingesque scrapbook paper to make little tags to attach to the ornament that will say, "Merry Christmas 2012" or something like that. I will post pictures when I decide to make them!
With almost a month left of 2012, I have come to the conclusion that I need to start living my life.
2012 was a year of firsts for me. I did my first solo trip to visit a friend in Boston. I lost 30 pounds. And above all, I turned 21. 21 years of my life are gone. In 21 years, I will be 42 years old.
As Christmas and eventually 2013 sets in, I have decided that I need to take chances with my life. This is where my list of "1001 Things to Do Before I Die" comes in. Throughout the past 3 years, I have completed some of the items on the list. At the beginning of every year, I told myself that I would complete at least one item a month. Well...that my friend, has not happened. Work, school, family...normal (boring) life has gotten in the way of completing things that I so desperately want to do in life.
My list has everything from asking a guy out on a date (I am panicking just thinking about that one) to drinking authentic hot chocolate in Spain (I am very excited for that one!).
I want to...need to complete these items and with this blog, I will keep my word and document as I complete (or try to complete) as many items on my list as I possibly can throughout 2013! I hope you will join in with me and live your life in the way I hope to.
