Mini Tutorial: Make a Face-Up Mock-Up for Your Blank Doll Head

Is anyone into making face-up mock-ups? :D You know, a digital preview of what a real-life doll face-up could look like?

I made one on a blank head I sculpted on Blender. I used a few things for the mock-up, including dolly brows by Meggilu. The eyebrows are modified heavily, but initially come from Meggilu's eyebrow drawing tutorial... here's the source image (ask permission if you use it.)

To "paste" these brows onto a picture of your blank doll head, you can use these free art software packages: Photoshop CS2, Gimp and Paint.NET.

Here's the fastest way to get rid of the white background boxes around your source images... and it works on almost all art software packages!:

1. Open your image file in the art software, and PASTE in a picture of the eyebrow. The best images to use for this have clear contrast and a white or light colored background.

2. Go to the LAYERS drop down menu, and select a different blending mode. "Multiply" hides the white background, and so do a few other modes.

3. Edit the eyebrow using the  SELECT/"Rectangular Marquee" tool (the square bounding box.) Tip: Click the Black arrow, and tick any "Auto Select" boxes available. Then click back to the SELECT tool, and you'll find it's MUCH easier to click to turn, pull, and squeeze your eyebrow image now. Tah-dar~!

I'm so excited to see that Meggilu is making a comeback into the hobby. I always loved the work that she did, hopefully she'll start taking commissions. I'm dying to have my last two dolls done by her.

The fact that Meggilu left the hobby and is no longer doing commissions makes me want to cry. She was utterly fantastic and she was the first faceup artist that I ever fell in love with and remains my favorite. I was never able to afford to commission her before and now that I can, she isn't doing them anymore. I bought a doll second hand that has a faceup by her and now it just makes me sad that I can't commission one for my other boy and have a matching set. I wish her luck in life.
