✒ Lesson 01 — Start Where the Story Begins.

"The first sentence doesn't simply begin a story— it invites the reader to trust you with their time."

Your reader doesn't need to know what the weather is, what your protagonist is wearing, or that they woke up and brushed their teeth. Unless those details immediately matter.

While these details can certainly have their place, they rarely create immediate engagement.

Instead, ask yourself this:

Where does my story truly begin?

Where a question is born.

Example I — Begin with middle

For example:

This opening immediately creates uncertainty. Without providing lengthy exposition, it encourages the reader to ask questions.

Who died?

Why is the narrator uncertain?

Why is there such emotional distance?

A compelling opening doesn't answer every question. It invites the reader to discover the answers.

Example II — Begin with a Memorable Thought

For example:

This opening doesn't rush into introducing characters or explaining the plot ( which is necessary you can do the intro by second or third para) . Instead, it establishes a mood through poetic language and presents an idea that resonates beyond the story itself.

Not every story needs to begin with action. Sometimes a beautifully written sentence can establish the tone, or central idea before the narrative unfolds.

A Question Worth Asking

Before writing your first paragraph, ask yourself:

"If a complete stranger read only my opening sentence, would they want to continue?" If the answer is uncertain, keep refining it.

Writing Exercise

Rewrite your opening three different ways.

✦ Begin with conflict.

✦ Begin with mystery.

✦ Begin with a memorable or poetic statement.

Then compare each version. Which one would make you turn the page?
