Model of boats with a fishing scene

This fishing model was found in the serdab of Meketre’s tomb which contained twenty-five wooden models of men and women performing various daily tasks typical of life along the Nile.

One vivid and animated scene shows fishermen on board two green-hulled boats used on the river in ancient times; the boats are made from strips of rushes tied with cords.

Oarsmen, one in the bow and one in the stern, propel the boats while other men, dressed in white trousers held up by a single brace that crosses the chest, are busy freeing fish from the net slung between the two boats.

The net is weighed down at the sides by wooden weights and dragged with the aid of ropes held by the two sets of fishermen.

This curious and realistic miniature world was made to accompany the deceased on his journey beyond the tomb with the purpose of serving him in his daily needs in the afterlife.

Ancient Egyptian 'granary with scribes' diorama: A miniature workplace found buried in a tomb from the Middle Kingdom

A small, wooden diorama found in an ancient Egyptian tomb reflects the importance of grain in an agricultural society.

This is not a recent find. In fact, it was discovered by Herbert Winlock for the Met Museum in the 1920s, but it is still one of the coolest groups of objects, I think, from ancient Egypt

Model of a Slaughter House

Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, ca. 1981-1975 BC. Tomb of Meketre (TT280), Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, Thebes. Now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 20.3.10

This model of a slaughter house was discovered in a hidden chamber beside twenty-three other models of boats, gardens, and workshops that led to the royal chief steward Meketre’s rock-cut tomb. Meketre started working for the kings of the 11th Dynasty under King Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II and continued to serve them until the early 12th Dynasty.

In the big hall, two oxen are being slaughtered. Two men are stabbing their necks while their legs are trussed together. Two guys stand beside them, holding bowls to gather the blood that the men in the corner, fanning fires beneath kettles, will turn into pudding. Holding batons, a supervisor and a clerk supervise the slaughtering and plucking of a goose. Meat joints dangle overhead on the balcony. Meat joints are held together by repaired cords.

"Among the most famous pieces in the Metropolitan's collection of Egyptian art are the wooden models found in a small hidden room in the tomb of a Middle Kingdom official named Meketre (died ca. 1985 B.C.). Because the ceiling threatened to collapse, the chamber containing the models was cleared in three days, with Burton taking and developing several dozen photographs of the process. At the end of each day, the models were carried from the tomb to the excavation house along essentially the same route that had been taken by Meketre's funeral procession nearly forty centuries earlier."
