Arknights 3/2* textposts PART 7 (who let it go for this long)
originium is magic or sumthin
There’s much to praise about Arknights, but one thing in particular that makes me is the dynamic in Reserve Squad A4, particularly the fact that some tropes about gender get subverted.
Normally, in a party of characters, the front line tank and dps roles are fulfilled by males, and the ranged or support roles tend to get filled by females. This probably due to the fact that direct combat and enduring blows is seen as a tough, masculine thing, whereas things like archery, healing, or spellcasting are seen as things requiring a more delicate touch, and typically are the less heavily armored roles. Since the cultural perception of men as being tough and women as being delicate and needing protecting still persists, this kind of typecasting tends to happen.
However, this gets reversed in Reserve Squad A4. The squad has two melee operators: Melantha and Cardigan, and three ranged operators: Ansel, Steward, and Adnachiel. The roles of tank and DPS are taken by the two girls of the team, and the boys are the ones running support. It plays out mechanically, too; Melantha has more attack power, defense, and HP than any of the guys, and Cardigan is usually used to protect the others from ranged attacks, and can hold her own pretty well.
I really like how it lends itself well to the girls playing hero or guardian for the guys, instead of defaulting to The Guy Needs To Protect The Girl Cause She’s A Girl and He’s A Guy, which often tends to undermine the female character’s sense of competence or capability and the male character’s sense of self preservation or practical thinking. I would like to see more of Squad 4A interacting, and I do hope they keep up this kind of subversion.
Happy Birthday, Melantha!

A fanart of the best 6*, ahem, I mean 3* in the game. Just something simple to ease back into drawing.
